PERMIN CREAM (30 GM)

Name

Brand Name: PERMIN CREAM (30 GM) Common Name: Permethrin Cream

Composition

PERMIN CREAM contains Permethrin 5% w/w as its active ingredient. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, an antiparasitic drug.

Uses

PERMIN CREAM is primarily used to treat parasitic infections caused by eggs, lice, and mites. It is specifically indicated for:

  • Scabies: A skin infection caused by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash. PERMIN CREAM effectively eliminates these mites and their eggs.
  • Pediculosis (Head Lice Infestation): It is used to kill head lice that infest the scalp and hair, and also destroys their eggs (nits).
  • Crab Louse Infections: Also known as pubic lice.

The cream works by disrupting the nervous system of the parasites, inactivating their nerve membranes, leading to paralysis and eventual death.

Dosage and Administration

PERMIN CREAM is for external use only. The skin should be clean, cool, and dry before application. Do not take a hot shower or bath immediately before applying.

  • For Scabies: Apply a thin layer of the cream to the entire body from the neck down, rubbing lightly until the cream disappears. It's important to include all skin surfaces, such as between the fingers and toes, under the nails, and on the soles of the feet. For babies under two years, also apply to the face, neck, ears, and scalp, avoiding the area immediately around the eyes and mouth. Leave the cream on for at least 8-14 hours before washing off thoroughly. Often, one application is sufficient, but a second application may be required after 7 days if advised by a doctor.
  • For Head Lice: Apply to the scalp and hair, leave it on for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and comb out lice and eggs.

Dosage may vary based on age, body weight, and disease condition; always follow your doctor's instructions.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Rash
  • Burning sensation
  • Stinging sensation
  • Itching or tingling

Most of these side effects are usually mild and temporary and may not require medical attention. However, consult a doctor if they persist or worsen.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if you are allergic to Permethrin, chrysanthemums, other pyrethroids, or any components of the cream.
  • External Use Only: Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and mucous membranes. In case of accidental contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water immediately.
  • Skin Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have other skin diseases or chronic illnesses like eczema, as Permin Cream might cause additional irritation.
  • Children: Use with caution in children, especially those below six years or two months of age; consult a doctor.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. While generally considered safe if prescribed during pregnancy, and limited data suggests low risk during breastfeeding, medical advice is recommended.
  • Interactions: Avoid concurrent use of corticosteroids for eczematous reactions before Permin Cream treatment, as it might exacerbate the scabies infestation. No known specific drug-food or alcohol interactions.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of sight and reach of children. The cream should be stored at 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about PERMIN CREAM (30 GM) by UNIVERSAL TWIN LABS:

What is PERMIN CREAM used for?

PERMIN CREAM is primarily used for the treatment of scabies, a skin infection caused by tiny mites, and pediculosis (lice infestations), including head lice and crab lice. It helps to eliminate the mites and lice, along with their eggs, thereby relieving associated itching, redness, and irritation.

How does PERMIN CREAM work?

PERMIN CREAM contains the active ingredient Permethrin, which is a synthetic pyrethroid. It works by targeting the nerve cell membranes of the parasites (mites and lice), disrupting the normal flow of sodium ions. This disruption leads to delayed repolarization, causing paralysis and ultimately the death of the pests.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

For scabies, a thin layer of PERMIN CREAM should be applied to the entire body from the neck down for adults and children over two years. It's important to cover all skin surfaces, including between the fingers and toes, under the nails, and on the soles of the feet. For babies under two years, it should also be applied to the face, neck, ears, and scalp, while avoiding the immediate areas around the eyes and mouth. The cream should be left on for 8 to 14 hours (typically 8-12 hours) before being thoroughly washed off. One application is often sufficient, but a second application may be advised by a doctor after 7 days if the infestation persists.

For head lice, apply the cream to the scalp and hair, leave it for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and comb out the lice and eggs. Reapplication might be necessary after 7 days as per a doctor's advice.

Specific dosage amounts for scabies based on age:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: a full 30g tube.
  • Children aged 6-12 years: up to 1/2 of a tube.
  • Children aged 1-5 years: up to 1/4 of a tube.
  • Children aged 2 months to 1 year: up to 1/8 of a tube.
  • Dosage for children less than 2 months is not established and should only be used under medical guidance.

What are the possible side effects of PERMIN CREAM?

Common side effects can include mild burning, stinging, tingling, itching, redness, rash, edema, or eczema at the site of application. These reactions are usually mild and temporary, and some irritation symptoms might also be part of the underlying scabies condition itself. If these side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Is PERMIN CREAM safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy: The use of PERMIN CREAM during pregnancy should only be done under medical advice. While systemic absorption after topical application is very low, suggesting minimal risk, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are limited. It is generally considered safe if prescribed and clearly needed by a doctor.

During breastfeeding: It is not known whether permethrin is excreted in human breast milk. Therefore, it is generally advised not to use PERMIN CREAM while breastfeeding, or consideration should be given to temporarily discontinuing nursing or withholding treatment if the mother needs to use the cream. It should not be applied to the breast or large areas of skin when breastfeeding.

Can PERMIN CREAM be taken with other medications?

Since PERMIN CREAM is for external use, it is generally less likely to interact with orally taken medications. However, the use of corticosteroids for eczematous skin reactions should be temporarily stopped before applying PERMIN CREAM, as corticosteroids can potentially worsen a scabies infestation by suppressing the immune response against the mites. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are using.

What precautions should be taken while using PERMIN CREAM?

  • PERMIN CREAM is for external use only.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with water immediately.
  • Do not apply the cream to broken or inflamed skin.
  • Ensure your skin is clean, cool, and dry before application. Avoid taking a hot shower or bath just before applying the cream, as this can make the skin warm.
  • Do not use PERMIN CREAM if you have a known allergy to permethrin, other synthetic pyrethroids, or chrysanthemums.
  • Use with caution if you have pre-existing lung conditions like asthma.
  • Keep the cream away from fire as it can be flammable.
  • If you are a nursing professional routinely applying permethrin to patients, consider wearing gloves to prevent skin irritation.

What happens if a dose of PERMIN CREAM is missed?

If you miss a dose of PERMIN CREAM, apply it as soon as you remember. However, do not apply extra cream to compensate for the missed dose. If you are unsure, consult your doctor for advice.

How should PERMIN CREAM be stored?

PERMIN CREAM should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It should not be stored above 25°C and must not be frozen. Always keep the cream in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture. Ensure it is kept out of sight and reach of children.
