TUGAIN MEN 5% Solution

TUGAIN MEN 5% Solution is a topical medication specifically formulated for men to address hair loss. It is manufactured by Cipla.

Composition

  • Active Ingredients: Minoxidil (5% w/v) and Finasteride (0.1% w/v).

Uses

TUGAIN MEN 5% Solution is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) in men aged 18 to 60 years.
  • It works by increasing blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating hair growth, and preventing further hair loss. Minoxidil acts as a vasodilator, while Finasteride reduces the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair thinning.

Dosage and Administration

  • Apply 1 mL of the solution twice daily (morning and night) to the hair loss area of the scalp.
  • Ensure the scalp and hair are completely dry before application.
  • Gently massage the solution into the scalp with fingertips and wash hands thoroughly after use.
  • Do not exceed a total dose of 2 mL per day.
  • Avoid shampooing hair for at least 4 hours after application to ensure effectiveness. Do not use a hairdryer, as it can reduce the medicine's efficacy.
  • It may take several months to notice hair growth, with initial growth possibly being soft and colorless.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Application site reactions such as burning, itching, irritation, redness, and dry skin on the scalp.
  • Increased hair shedding during the initial weeks of treatment.
  • Unwanted non-scalp hair growth if the solution trickles onto other body parts.
  • Headache.
  • Less common but serious side effects can include impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, breast enlargement, and breast tenderness in males.

Precautions

  • For Men Only: This solution is strictly for male use and must not be used by women, especially if pregnant or potentially pregnant, due to the risk of absorption of Finasteride which can harm a male fetus.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or broken/irritated skin. Rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart problems, liver disease, high blood pressure, or are using other scalp treatments.
  • Not recommended for individuals under 18 or over 60 years of age without medical advice.
  • Temporary hair shedding may occur in the first few weeks, indicating the medicine is working.
  • If scalp irritation persists or worsens, or if symptoms like chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, sudden weight gain, or swelling occur, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place, typically below 25°C or 30°C.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions

Tugain Men 5% Solution is a topical medication specifically formulated for men to treat hair loss. It combines two active ingredients, Minoxidil and Finasteride, to address male pattern baldness.

What is Tugain Men 5% Solution used for?

Tugain Men 5% Solution is primarily used for the treatment of common hereditary hair loss in men, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It helps prevent further hair loss and stimulates hair regrowth, particularly on the top of the scalp.

How does Tugain Men 5% Solution work?

This solution works through a dual mechanism. Minoxidil, a vasodilator, widens blood vessels in the scalp, increasing blood flow to hair follicles. This provides more oxygen and nutrients, stimulating hair growth and preventing hair cell death. Finasteride, a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, reduces the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone that contributes to hair follicle miniaturization and excessive hair loss.

What is the usual dosage for Tugain Men 5% Solution?

The typical dosage involves applying 1 ml of the solution directly to the affected scalp area twice daily, usually at 12-hour intervals. The total daily application should not exceed 2 ml. It's crucial to apply it to a clean, dry scalp and massage it gently, allowing it to dry completely for about 4 hours before washing or using other hair products.

What are the possible side effects of Tugain Men 5% Solution?

Common side effects include application site reactions like dry skin, itching, redness, or dermatitis. Some users may experience temporary hair shedding in the initial weeks. Other possible side effects can include unwanted non-scalp hair growth (if it comes into contact with other areas), impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, breast enlargement, and breast tenderness in males.

Is Tugain Men 5% Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, Tugain Men 5% Solution is highly unsafe and not indicated for use in women, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Finasteride, one of its components, can cause significant harm to a developing male fetus if absorbed. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should not handle this medicine.

Can Tugain Men 5% Solution be taken with other medications?

Caution should be exercised when using Tugain Men 5% Solution with other medications. It should not be used with other topical agents on the scalp that might alter the skin barrier, such as corticosteroids, tretinoin, dithranol, or petrolatum, as these could increase minoxidil absorption. If you are also taking oral Finasteride or have heart conditions requiring medications like peripheral vasodilators, discuss this with your doctor, as there is a theoretical possibility of interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using Tugain Men 5% Solution?

This solution is for external use on the scalp only and is intended only for men aged 18 to 60. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin, rinsing thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not use it on an inflamed, infected, irritated, or painful scalp. Patients with heart conditions, liver disease, or urinary obstruction should use it with caution and inform their doctor. Do not use a hairdryer to speed drying as it may reduce effectiveness.

What happens if a dose of Tugain Men 5% Solution is missed?

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed application, as this will not increase effectiveness and may lead to increased side effects.

How should Tugain Men 5% Solution be stored?

Tugain Men 5% Solution should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry place, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. It should be kept in its original container, tightly sealed, and out of reach of children and pets.
