Description

FLUTIWAYS AZ NASAL SPRAY 7 G (70 METERED DOSE) by MANKIND PHARMA LTD.

FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray is a prescription medication manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd., designed to provide comprehensive relief from nasal allergy symptoms.

Composition Each spray of FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray contains:

  • Fluticasone Furoate (27.5 mcg): A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the nasal passages.
  • Azelastine (140 mcg): An antihistamine that blocks histamine's effects, thereby alleviating allergic reactions.

Uses FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray is primarily indicated for the management of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (hay fever). It effectively treats symptoms such as:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itching
  • Watery eyes

It can also be used for non-allergic rhinitis.

Dosage and Administration This medication is for nasal use only.

  1. Shake the bottle gently before each use.
  2. Clear your nostrils by gently blowing your nose.
  3. Tilt your head slightly forward, close one nostril, and insert the spray tip into the other nostril.
  4. Direct the spray towards the sides of your nostril, away from the nasal septum, and press down on the pump while gently breathing in through your nose.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth.
  6. Repeat for the other nostril.
  7. Clean the spray tip and replace the cap after use.

The typical recommended dosage is one spray in each nostril twice daily, or as directed by your physician.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Nasal irritation or discomfort, headache, bitter taste (dysgeusia), fatigue, drowsiness (somnolence), and nosebleeds (epistaxis).

Frequently asked questions

FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray is a combination medication containing Fluticasone Furoate (a corticosteroid) and Azelastine (an antihistamine). It is primarily used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

What is FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray used for?

FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray is used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, which can be seasonal or perennial (year-round). These symptoms include nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, itching, and watery eyes.

How does FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray work?

This nasal spray contains two active ingredients: Fluticasone Furoate and Azelastine. Fluticasone Furoate is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the nasal passages by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammatory reactions. Azelastine is an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine H1-receptors, thereby preventing the typical allergic responses such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose. The dual action provides both immediate and long-term relief from nasal allergy symptoms.

What is the usual dosage for FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray?

For adults and children 6 years of age and older, the typical recommended dosage is one spray in each nostril twice daily (in the morning and evening). This dosage can be adjusted by your doctor based on the severity of your symptoms and individual response. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and not exceed the recommended amount. Children younger than 6 years of age should use it only as determined by a doctor.

What are the possible side effects of FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray?

Common side effects may include nasal irritation, dryness in the nasal passages, headache, a bitter taste in the mouth (especially if the spray drips down the throat), fatigue, drowsiness, and nosebleeds.

Though rare, more severe side effects can occur, such as persistent pain, bleeding, or ulceration in the nasal passages, vision changes (blurred vision), or signs of a severe allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing). If you experience any severe or concerning side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Is FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Caution is advised when using Flutiways AZ Nasal Spray during pregnancy. While very little fluticasone gets into the blood and almost none to the baby, it's generally recommended to use it only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether the components of Flutiways AZ Nasal Spray pass into breast milk. However, the amount of inhaled corticosteroids absorbed into the maternal bloodstream and excreted into breast milk is likely very small and unlikely to cause side effects in a breastfed infant. It is advised to inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using this medicine.

Can FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray be taken with other medications?

Flutiways AZ Nasal Spray can interact with certain medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including herbal remedies, vitamins, and supplements.

Specifically, be cautious with:

  • Potent CYP3A4 inhibitors: Medicines like ritonavir (used to treat HIV) or ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections) can increase the corticosteroid effects of fluticasone furoate, raising the risk of systemic side effects such as Cushing syndrome and adrenal suppression. Coadministration is generally not recommended unless benefits outweigh risks.
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants: Azelastine can cause drowsiness, and taking it with other CNS depressants such as alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics, prescription pain medicine, or certain allergy/cold medicines can increase this effect.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Use the nasal spray consistently as prescribed for best results.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water for at least 10 minutes.
  • Clear your nasal passages by gently blowing your nose before administration.
  • Avoid sniffing hard after spraying to prevent the medication from draining into your throat.
  • Do not share the bottle with others to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had recent nasal ulcers, nasal surgery, or nasal trauma, as the spray may prevent proper healing.
  • If you have conditions like chickenpox, measles, tuberculosis, glaucoma, cataracts, herpes infection of the eyes, or sores inside the nose, inform your doctor before using.
  • Flutiways AZ Nasal Spray may cause drowsiness; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Use with caution if you have liver health issues.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses to make up for a missed one.

How should FLUTIWAYS AZ Nasal Spray be stored?

Store the nasal spray in a closed container at room temperature (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep it from freezing. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Always replace the cap after use. Dispose of the bottle after the prescribed number of sprays (e.g., 70 metered doses) or as advised by your healthcare professional, even if some medicine remains.
