Frequently asked questions
Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) FAQs
What is Xarelto used for?
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent and treat blood clots. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and to reduce the risk of stroke in people with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It may also be used after certain surgeries to prevent blood clots.
How does Xarelto work?
Xarelto works by inhibiting Factor Xa, an essential component in the blood clotting process. By blocking this factor, Xarelto decreases the blood’s ability to clot, helping to prevent harmful clots from forming.
What is the usual dosage for Xarelto?
The dosage depends on the condition being treated:
- For DVT or PE, the typical dose is 15 mg twice daily for the first 21 days, then 20 mg once daily.
- For stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, the usual dose is 20 mg once daily (or 15 mg once daily in patients with kidney impairment).
- For prevention after surgery, the dose varies by procedure. Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the correct dosage.
What are the possible side effects of Xarelto?
Common side effects include bleeding, easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums. Serious side effects can include severe bleeding, allergic reactions, or liver problems. Seek medical attention if you experience unusual or prolonged bleeding, black or bloody stools, or severe headaches.
Is Xarelto safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Xarelto is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as its safety has not been well established in these groups. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can Xarelto be taken with other medications?
Xarelto can interact with other medications, especially other blood thinners, certain antifungals, and some antibiotics. Always inform your doctor about all other medicines and supplements you are taking to avoid dangerous interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using Xarelto?
- Avoid activities that increase your risk of injury or bleeding.
- Inform healthcare providers that you are taking Xarelto before any medical or dental procedures.
- Do not stop taking Xarelto without consulting your doctor, as this could increase your risk of blood clots.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose:
- For 15 mg twice daily: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, so that you take 2 tablets in one day. Resume your normal schedule the next day.
- For once-daily dosing: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day, but do not take two doses at once. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose.
How should Xarelto be stored?
Store Xarelto at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date on the package.
