Description

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP 100ML

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP, also known as Dropizin Syrup Peppermint or Dropizin SF Sugar Free Soothing Peppermint Flavour Syrup, is a medication manufactured by Indoco Remedies Limited.

Composition

Each 5ml of DROPIZIN SF SYRUP contains:

  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate (2mg)
  • Levodropropizine (30mg)

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic that helps reduce cough associated with allergies by blocking the effects of histamine. Levodropropizine is a cough suppressant that works by reducing the activity of the cough center in the brain, thereby suppressing the cough reflex.

Uses

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP is primarily used for the treatment of dry cough. It also helps relieve symptoms associated with allergies, such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. It is indicated for allergic cough, hay fever, and common cold symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

Take DROPIZIN SF SYRUP in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but some sources suggest taking it on an empty stomach. Use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing and shake the bottle well before use. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Drowsiness, sedation, or impaired concentration
  • Dry mouth
  • Vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort
  • Dizziness, blurred vision, or headache
  • Insomnia, tremors, fatigue, or irritability

Serious side effects are uncommon but can include allergic reactions (skin rash, peeling, mouth ulcers), breathing problems, unexplained bleeding, recurrent fevers, infections, vision disturbances, fast or irregular heartbeat, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, or sudden decrease in blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.

Precautions

  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness and other side effects.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Generally not recommended. Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Chlorpheniramine can pass into breast milk and may harm the baby.
  • Driving & Operating Machinery: Avoid activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving, due to potential dizziness and drowsiness.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease. It is not recommended for individuals with asthma, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, urinary problems, or stomach/intestinal blockages.
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including sedatives, tranquilizers, MAOIs, anticholinergic medications, CNS stimulants, and opioids, as interactions may occur.
  • Children: Not recommended for children below 2 years of age.

Storage

Store the medicine in its original container, tightly closed, in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP 100ML by INDOCO REMEDIES LIMITED is a combination medication containing Levodropropizine and Chlorpheniramine Maleate. It is primarily used to relieve dry cough and associated allergic symptoms.

Here are some frequently asked questions about DROPIZIN SF SYRUP:

What is DROPIZIN SF SYRUP used for?

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP is used to treat dry cough, which is often associated with the common cold or allergies. It helps alleviate symptoms like throat irritation, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.

How does DROPIZIN SF SYRUP work?

This syrup works through its two active ingredients: Levodropropizine and Chlorpheniramine Maleate. Levodropropizine acts as a cough suppressant by working peripherally to inhibit the cough reflex. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical in the body responsible for allergic reactions.

What is the usual dosage of DROPIZIN SF SYRUP?

For adults and children over 12 years old, the typical dose is 60 mg of Levodropropizine (equivalent to 10 mL of syrup) up to three times daily, with doses taken at least 6 hours apart. For children aged 2 to 12 years, the dosage is calculated based on body weight, usually 1 mg/kg per dose, given up to three times a day. The treatment duration should not exceed 7 days without consulting a doctor.

What are the possible side effects of DROPIZIN SF SYRUP?

Common side effects can include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, vomiting, blurred vision, constipation, tiredness, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, headache, and palpitations. Drowsiness is particularly common due to the Chlorpheniramine component. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is DROPIZIN SF SYRUP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DROPIZIN SF SYRUP is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Limited data exist on its safety during pregnancy, and animal studies suggest it can cross the placental barrier. For breastfeeding mothers, Levodropropizine can be found in breast milk, and Chlorpheniramine can also pass into breast milk, potentially harming the infant. It should only be used if the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks, and under strict medical supervision.

Can DROPIZIN SF SYRUP be taken with other medications?

Caution should be exercised when taking DROPIZIN SF SYRUP with other central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics, or other sedating antihistamines, as this can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Always inform your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using DROPIZIN SF SYRUP?

Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience drowsiness or dizziness after taking this syrup. It is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Use with caution if you have conditions such as severe heart failure, severe kidney or liver impairment, excessive mucus production, limited mucociliary function, asthma, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or diabetes. Inform your doctor if your cough lasts more than 7 days, returns, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or headache.

What happens if a dose of DROPIZIN SF SYRUP is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should DROPIZIN SF SYRUP be stored?

Store the syrup in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C.
