Description

ALFUSIN D TABLET (15 TAB) by CIPLA LTD.

Alfusin D Tablet is a combination medication primarily prescribed for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult men, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.

  • Composition: Each tablet contains Alfuzosin (10 mg) and Dutasteride (0.5 mg).

    • Alfuzosin: An alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist, it works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate gland and bladder neck, facilitating easier urine flow.
    • Dutasteride: A 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, it reduces the size of the enlarged prostate by lowering the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for prostate growth.
  • Uses: It is indicated for treating symptoms associated with BPH, such as difficulty initiating urination, weak urine stream, frequent or urgent need to urinate, and increased urination at night. It also helps reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for prostate surgery.

  • Dosage and Administration: Alfusin D Tablet should be taken orally, typically once daily, as advised by your doctor. It is generally recommended to take the tablet immediately after the same meal each day. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not be crushed, chewed, or broken. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, drowsiness, decreased libido, ejaculatory disorders (such as decreased semen volume), impotence (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection), breast enlargement (gynecomastia), and breast tenderness. Other common side effects may include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and dry mouth.
    • Serious (Rare): Persistent painful penile erection (priapism), chest pain, and severe allergic reactions.
  • Precautions:

    • This medicine is not for use in women or children. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not handle the medicine or be exposed to the semen of men taking Alfusin D, as it may cause abnormalities in a developing fetus.
    • Caution is advised in patients with low blood pressure, liver/kidney disease, or a history of heart problems.
    • Alfusin D may cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.
    • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, other alpha-adrenergic antagonists, or erectile dysfunction medications, as interactions can occur.
    • Men are advised to use contraceptives (like condoms) during sexual intercourse and should not donate blood for at least six months after their last dose.
  • Storage: Store Alfusin D Tablet at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C, in a tightly closed container, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alfusin D Tablet used for?

Alfusin D Tablet is primarily used in adult men for the management of symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate gland. It helps to relieve urinary problems such as difficulty in passing urine, frequent or urgent urination, weak urine flow, and the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. This medicine does not cure prostate cancer.

How does Alfusin D Tablet work?

Alfusin D Tablet is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: Alfuzosin and Dutasteride. Alfuzosin is an alpha-blocker that works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate gland and the bladder neck, which helps improve urine flow. Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that reduces the size of the enlarged prostate by lowering the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth. Together, they work to improve urinary symptoms and reduce the size of the prostate.

What is the usual dosage for Alfusin D Tablet?

The typical dosage is one tablet taken orally once daily. It is generally recommended to take the tablet after the same meal each day to ensure proper absorption. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or broken. Always follow your doctor's prescribed dosage and duration.

What are the possible side effects of Alfusin D Tablet?

Common side effects may include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, decreased sex drive (libido), ejaculation disorders (such as decreased semen volume), impotence (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection), breast enlargement and tenderness (gynecomastia), runny/stuffy nose, and testicle pain/swelling. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Alfusin D Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, Alfusin D Tablet is contraindicated for use in women, especially those who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Dutasteride, one of the active ingredients, can cause serious abnormalities in the development of a male fetus by affecting its genitalia. Pregnant women should not handle leaking capsules, and men taking this medication should use a condom during sexual intercourse to prevent exposing their partner to dutasteride, which is known to pass into semen.

Can Alfusin D Tablet be taken with other medications?

Alfusin D Tablet can interact with certain medications. It should not be taken with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir) as these can significantly increase alfuzosin blood levels, raising the risk of side effects. Concomitant use with other alpha-blockers is generally advised against due to an increased risk of low blood pressure. Caution is also recommended when taking it with phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, vardenafil) as this combination can lead to a significant drop in blood pressure. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while taking Alfusin D Tablet?

This medicine may cause a drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up from a sitting or lying position. It's advisable to rise slowly. You should avoid driving or operating machinery until you understand how the medication affects you. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, low blood pressure, or liver/kidney disease. If you are scheduled for eye surgery (e.g., cataract or glaucoma), inform your ophthalmologist that you are taking this medication, as it may cause complications during the procedure. Regular monitoring of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels will be done by your doctor to rule out prostate cancer. Also, men taking this medication should not donate blood for at least 6 months after their last dose.

What happens if a dose of Alfusin D Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Alfusin D Tablet be stored?

Alfusin D Tablet should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
