Description

ALSARTAN-H TAB is a combination medication primarily used for the management of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It is manufactured by Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd..

Composition ALSARTAN-H TAB contains two active ingredients: Losartan (50 mg) and Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg). Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by relaxing blood vessels, while Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that helps remove excess salt and water from the body, thereby reducing blood pressure.

Uses This medicine is prescribed for:

  • Reducing high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Managing fluid build-up and swelling (oedema) caused by heart, kidney, or liver diseases.
  • Protecting the kidneys from damage in patients with diabetes.
  • Decreasing the risk of strokes in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy.

Dosage and Administration The typical dosage is one tablet daily. It can be taken with or without food. To avoid frequent urination at night, it is often advised to take the medicine in the morning and at the same time each day.

Side Effects Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, mild skin rash, and back pain. Other possible effects are cough, nasal congestion, upset stomach, increased blood uric acid, and electrolyte imbalance. Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe dehydration, allergic reactions (swelling of the face or throat), changes in kidney function, and persistent low blood pressure.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: ALSARTAN-H TAB should not be used if you are allergic to Losartan, Hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfonamide medicines. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, and generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. It should also be avoided in cases of severe liver disorders, anuria, low blood potassium or sodium, high calcium levels, and gout.
  • Warnings: Caution is advised with alcohol consumption as it may enhance side effects like dizziness and low blood pressure. Patients with kidney or liver diseases, diabetes, or gout should use this medication with caution, and monitoring of kidney function and electrolyte levels may be required. Avoid excessive sun exposure due to potential photosensitivity. Do not take potassium supplements or eat potassium-rich foods without consulting a doctor, as it can increase potassium levels in the blood.

Storage Store ALSARTAN-H TAB in a closed container at room temperature below 30°C (or 25°C). Protect it from excessive light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alsartan-H Tablet used for?

Alsartan-H Tablet is primarily used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It is often prescribed when a single medication is not sufficient to control blood pressure. Additionally, it helps in managing fluid build-up (oedema) caused by heart, kidney, or liver conditions. It can also protect the kidneys from damage in diabetic patients and reduce the risk of strokes in individuals with left ventricular hypertrophy.

How does Alsartan-H Tablet work?

Alsartan-H Tablet contains two active ingredients: Losartan (50 mg) and Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg). Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily and lowers blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that increases the production of urine, helping the body to eliminate excess water and salt, further reducing blood pressure. The combination of these two mechanisms provides effective blood pressure control.

What is the usual dosage for Alsartan-H Tablet?

The typical dosage is one tablet per day, but it should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Do not exceed the recommended dose or stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Alsartan-H Tablet?

Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, increased urination, and electrolyte imbalance. Some people might also experience a mild skin rash, back pain, or cold/flu-like symptoms. More serious, but less common, side effects can include severe dehydration, allergic reactions (like swelling of the face or throat), changes in kidney function, and persistent low blood pressure. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor.

Is Alsartan-H Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Alsartan-H Tablet is generally considered unsafe and is contraindicated during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, as it can harm or even cause death to the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, it is crucial to discuss this with your doctor for alternative treatments.

Breastfeeding: It is not recommended for use during breastfeeding as the medication may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the nursing infant. Your doctor may advise you to either discontinue breastfeeding or stop the medication based on your clinical condition.

Can Alsartan-H Tablet be taken with other medications or substances?

Alsartan-H Tablet can interact with several other medications and substances. It's essential to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking. Medications that may interact include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen, which can reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect and increase kidney damage risk.
  • Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, as they can increase blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia).
  • Lithium.
  • Insulin and oral antidiabetic medications, as it can affect blood glucose levels.
  • Other antihypertensive medications.
  • Alcohol, which can intensify the effects of Alsartan-H Tablet and cause a significant drop in blood pressure.

What precautions should be taken while using Alsartan-H Tablet?

Several precautions should be observed:

  • Inform your doctor if you have allergies to Losartan, Hydrochlorothiazide, or any other ingredients.
  • Exercise caution if you have pre-existing conditions such as liver disease, kidney problems (especially severe renal impairment where it's not recommended), diabetes, gout, or electrolyte imbalances.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly, as this can lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure.
  • Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels may be necessary.
  • Stay well-hydrated, as the medication can cause dehydration.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, as it may cause photosensitivity.
  • Limit consumption of potassium-rich foods.
  • Due to possible dizziness, be cautious when driving or operating machinery.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Alsartan-H Tablet?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How should Alsartan-H Tablet be stored?

Alsartan-H Tablet should be stored in its closed original container at room temperature, ideally below 30°C (or 25°C). Protect the medication from excessive light and moisture. Always keep it out of the reach of children.
