Description

URSETOR 300 Tablet

URSETOR 300 Tablet, manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is a medication primarily used for conditions affecting the liver and gallbladder.

Composition

  • Active Ingredient: Ursodeoxycholic Acid (300 mg)

Uses

URSETOR 300 Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Dissolving certain gallstones, particularly those composed mainly of cholesterol, and preventing their formation. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver and decreasing its absorption in the intestines, thereby increasing cholesterol solubility in bile.
  • Treating Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) or Primary Biliary Cholangitis (an autoimmune disease that damages the bile ducts in the liver). It helps protect liver cells from toxic bile acids and improves liver function.
  • Managing liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6-18 years.

Dosage and Administration

  • URSETOR 300 Tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of milk or water after a meal. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.
  • The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and the patient's health.
  • For dissolving gallstones, it may be taken once daily at night.
  • It is important to take the medicine regularly for maximum benefit, even if symptoms disappear, as complete dissolution of gallstones can take several months.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Rash
  • Headache, dizziness, insomnia, back pain, arthralgia, fatigue, dyspepsia, flatulence, weight gain. Most of these side effects are temporary and often resolve. If diarrhea persists, the doctor may reduce the dose or discontinue treatment.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid or any components of the tablet.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use with caution during pregnancy (Category B) and breastfeeding; consult a doctor.
  • Liver and Kidney Conditions: Caution is advised in patients with liver disease (including cirrhosis or portal hypertension) or kidney disease. Liver enzyme levels may be monitored regularly during long-term therapy.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum without consulting a doctor, as they can decrease effectiveness.
    • Cholestyramine or colestipol can interfere with absorption; maintain a time gap if co-administered.
    • Oral contraceptives, estrogenic hormones, and cholesterol-lowering agents like clofibrate may reduce effectiveness or increase gallstone formation.
  • Specific Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have gallbladder or bile duct inflammation, frequent upper abdominal pain, variceal bleeding, ascites, or liver encephalopathy.
  • Children: Can be given to children over 6 years with cystic fibrosis-associated liver disease, as prescribed by a doctor.
  • Alcohol: Caution is advised when consuming alcohol as it may lead to increased drowsiness and liver damage.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 25°C or 30°C.
Frequently asked questions

URSETOR 300 (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is a medication primarily used to manage certain liver and gallbladder conditions. It works by altering the composition of bile, which can help dissolve gallstones and protect liver cells.

What is URSETOR 300 used for?

URSETOR 300 is used to manage liver diseases like primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), an autoimmune disease that damages bile ducts in the liver. It is also prescribed to dissolve cholesterol-rich gallstones and prevent their formation. Additionally, it can be used to manage liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6-18 years and to treat cholestasis in pregnancy.

How does URSETOR 300 work?

URSETOR 300, containing ursodeoxycholic acid, works by several mechanisms. It decreases the secretion of cholesterol into bile by suppressing cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This action increases the solubility of cholesterol in bile, preventing it from forming gallstones or helping to dissolve existing ones. The medication also protects liver cells from the toxic effects of other bile acids and has immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties that can slow the progression of diseases like primary biliary cholangitis.

What is the usual dosage of URSETOR 300?

The daily dose of URSETOR 300 is determined by your doctor, as it can vary based on your condition's severity and how you respond to the medicine. It is often advised to take 2 to 3 doses per day, with the last dose recommended at bedtime. For gallstone dissolution, it might be suggested once daily at night. It should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, usually after a meal or with milk.

What are the possible side effects of URSETOR 300?

Common side effects of URSETOR 300 include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort or pain, rash, itching (pruritus), hair loss (alopecia), headache, dizziness, insomnia, back pain, arthralgia, and weight gain. Most of these side effects are temporary and often resolve on their own, but if they persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor.

Is URSETOR 300 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

URSETOR 300 is categorized as Category B for pregnancy, meaning caution is advised. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and advised by a doctor, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks. For breastfeeding mothers, URSETOR 300 should be used with caution, and it's recommended to discuss with your doctor whether the benefits outweigh the risks, as it is not known if it passes into breast milk.

Can URSETOR 300 be taken with other medications?

URSETOR 300 can interact with certain medications. Cholesterol-lowering resins like cholestyramine and colestipol can interfere with its absorption, so they should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Hormonal contraceptives and estrogens can increase cholesterol in bile, potentially reducing URSETOR 300's effectiveness. Other lipid-regulating agents such as clofibrate may also decrease its efficacy. Antacids containing aluminum can also reduce its effectiveness. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.

What precautions should be taken with URSETOR 300?

Caution is advised for patients with certain conditions like liver disease (especially cirrhosis or portal hypertension) and acute inflammation of the gallbladder. It is not recommended for use with cholesterol, radiopaque, bile pigment stones, or stones larger than 20 mm in diameter. Patients with variceal bleeding, ascites, or liver encephalopathy should also inform their doctor. Regular monitoring of liver function and bilirubin levels may be required, and an ultrasound might be used to monitor gallstone dissolution. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may increase drowsiness and liver damage.

What happens if a dose of URSETOR 300 is missed?

If you miss a dose of URSETOR 300, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Always consult your doctor before altering your dosage.

How should URSETOR 300 be stored?

URSETOR 300 should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat. Keep the medicine out of reach of children. Ensure that the medicine is used before its expiry date.
