Description
GERBISA 10MG SUPP
Name:
- Brand Name: Gerbisa 10mg Suppository, Gerbisa Suppository
- Manufacturer: Zydus Cadila
Composition: Gerbisa 10mg Suppository contains Bisacodyl 10mg as its active ingredient.
Uses: Gerbisa 10mg Suppository is a stimulant laxative primarily used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It is also prescribed to empty the bowels before certain medical procedures such as surgery, X-rays, colonoscopies, or other intestinal investigations. Bisacodyl works by stimulating bowel muscles, increasing intestinal activity to facilitate a bowel movement and softening stools.
Dosage and Administration: This medicine is for rectal use only and must not be taken orally. Typically, one suppository is used per day, as advised by your doctor. For best results, it is often recommended for use at bedtime. To administer, lie on your left side and raise your right knee to the chest, remove the wrapper, and insert the pointed end into the rectum. Remain lying down for about 15 minutes. Do not use continuously for more than five days without medical consultation to prevent laxative dependency.
Side Effects: Common side effects include rectal pain or irritation, mild stomach cramps/discomfort, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and diarrhea. Rectal bleeding and skin rash can also occur. Consult your doctor if these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience excessive rectal bleeding.
Precautions:
- Do not use if allergic to bisacodyl or any other ingredients.
- Avoid use in cases of intestinal obstruction, severe dehydration, acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis), inflammatory bowel disease, or rectal bleeding.
- The 10mg dose is not recommended for children under 12 years of age; use in children should be under medical supervision.
- Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Avoid taking within one hour of consuming milk, dairy products, or antacids, as it may affect absorption or cause gastric irritation.
- Gerbisa is not for weight loss.
- Maintain a fiber-rich diet, increase fluid intake, and engage in regular exercise to support bowel health.
Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture, at a temperature below 25°C or 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is GERBISA 10MG SUPP used for?
GERBISA 10MG SUPP (Bisacodyl 10mg Suppository) is a stimulant laxative primarily used for the short-term treatment of constipation, which is characterized by difficulty in passing stools. It is also used to empty the bowels before certain medical procedures like surgery, X-rays, or colonoscopies.
How does GERBISA 10MG SUPP work?
GERBISA 10MG SUPP works by stimulating the muscles in your intestines, thereby increasing bowel movement and making it easier for stool to pass through the digestive system. It also helps in softening the stool.
What is the usual dosage for GERBISA 10MG SUPP?
For adults and children 12 years of age and older, the usual dose is one 10 mg suppository inserted rectally once daily as needed for constipation. Children aged 6 to 11 years should use half a suppository (5 mg) once daily, and for children under 6 years, a doctor should be consulted. It is typically recommended to use the suppository at bedtime for a bowel movement the next morning. Do not use more than one suppository per day.
What are the possible side effects of GERBISA 10MG SUPP?
Common side effects may include mild stomach cramps or discomfort, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, rectal irritation, burning, or itching. More serious, but less common, side effects can include severe abdominal pain, excessive rectal bleeding, fainting, and vomiting. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, or notice blood in your stool, consult your doctor immediately.
Is GERBISA 10MG SUPP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, GERBISA 10MG SUPP may be unsafe, as animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, though human studies are limited. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, so they can weigh the benefits against potential risks.
GERBISA 10MG SUPP is generally considered safe for use during breastfeeding as it does not pass into breast milk and is unlikely to affect the baby. However, it is always best to consult your doctor before use.
Can GERBISA 10MG SUPP be taken with other medications?
There is limited information available on specific drug interactions with GERBISA 10MG SUPP. It is generally advised to take Bisacodyl at least two hours after other medications to prevent interference with their absorption. Concomitant administration with milk, dairy products, or antacids should be avoided within one hour of taking Gerbisa, as they can affect the coating of the suppository and its effectiveness. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
What precautions should be taken while using GERBISA 10MG SUPP?
GERBISA 10MG SUPP should be used for rectal administration only and should not be swallowed. Do not use it continuously for more than five days without consulting your doctor, as prolonged use can lead to laxative dependency, bowel damage, and electrolyte imbalances.
Avoid using GERBISA 10MG SUPP if you have an allergy to bisacodyl, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions requiring surgery, severe dehydration, inflammatory bowel disease, anal fissures, piles, or rectal bleeding. Inform your doctor if you have a history of stomach disorders like appendicitis or a bowel blockage.
It is also recommended to drink plenty of water, eat fiber-rich foods, and exercise regularly to support bowel health.
What happens if a dose of GERBISA 10MG SUPP is missed?
As GERBISA 10MG SUPP is typically used on an "as needed" basis for occasional constipation, a missed dose is generally not a concern. If you have been advised to use it regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to catch up. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns about missed doses.
How should GERBISA 10MG SUPP be stored?
GERBISA 10MG SUPP should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), away from heat and direct light. It should be kept out of the reach of children and pets. If the suppository becomes soft, you may place it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before use. Do not use if the foil packaging is torn or open, or if the medicine has expired.
