ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE

ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE is a medication manufactured by Cipla Ltd..

  • Composition Each hard gelatin capsule contains Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate IP equivalent to Esomeprazole 20 mg (as enteric-coated pellets) and Domperidone IP 30 mg (as sustained-release pellets).

  • Uses ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE is primarily used to manage various gastrointestinal disorders. These include Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It also helps relieve symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, irritation, and bloating.

  • Dosage and Administration This capsule should be taken orally once daily, ideally at least one hour before meals, on an empty stomach. The capsule must be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed, chewed, or opened. It is crucial to follow the dosage and duration advised by your healthcare professional. If a dose is missed, it should be omitted, and the regular dosing schedule resumed; do not double the dose.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, and sleepiness. Serious side effects can include fundic gland polyps, and long-term use may lead to weak bones and deficiencies in magnesium and vitamin B12.

  • Precautions Caution is advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women; consult a doctor before use. Patients with liver or kidney problems, or active heart conditions (e.g., Congestive Heart Failure), should use this medicine with caution or it may be contraindicated. It can interact with certain medications, including those metabolized by CYP2C19 (e.g., diazepam, phenytoin), HIV medications (atazanavir), and methotrexate. Alcohol consumption should be limited as it may increase stomach irritation and drowsiness. Driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided if dizziness or sleepiness occurs.

  • Storage Store ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE below 25°C or 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE used for?

ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE is primarily used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), commonly known as acid reflux, especially when it doesn't respond to esomeprazole alone. It also helps manage symptoms like heartburn, acidity, stomach pain, irritation, nausea, vomiting, bloating, burping, and indigestion. Additionally, it is prescribed for peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, a condition causing excessive stomach acid production.

How does ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE work?

ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE contains two active ingredients: Esomeprazole and Domperidone. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking an enzyme system called the gastric proton pump. Domperidone is a prokinetic that increases the movement of the stomach and intestines, helping food move more easily through the digestive tract and reducing the backward flow of acid (reflux). It also helps to control nausea and vomiting by blocking certain chemical messengers in the brain and gut.

What is the usual dosage of ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE?

The capsule should be taken once daily, at least one hour before meals, preferably on an empty stomach. It should be swallowed whole with liquid and not be opened, chewed, or crushed. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the dose and duration of treatment.

What are the possible side effects of ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE?

Common side effects may include diarrhea, stomach pain, dryness in the mouth, headache, flatulence, nausea, dizziness, and constipation. If these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience more serious effects such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, skin rash, disrupted menstrual cycle, breast pain, or irregular heartbeat, seek medical attention immediately. Long-term use may also lead to a deficiency of minerals like magnesium and vitamin B12, and an increased risk of bone fractures.

Is ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if clearly advised by a doctor. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and there is limited information on its use in humans. Your doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Breastfeeding: It is generally considered unsafe to use ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE while breastfeeding. Domperidone is excreted in human milk, and adverse effects, particularly cardiac effects, in the infant cannot be ruled out. While esomeprazole passes into breast milk in very small amounts, the overall combination is advised against or requires close medical supervision.

Can ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE be taken with other medications?

ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE can interact with several medications. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking. Interactions can occur with anti-HIV medications (e.g., atazanavir, nelfinavir), blood thinners (e.g., clopidogrel), antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole), certain antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), medicines for heart failure (e.g., digoxin), immunosuppressants (e.g., tacrolimus), and some medicines for mental problems (e.g., diazepam, phenytoin). Concomitant use with medicines that affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation) is generally not recommended or requires extreme caution due to the domperidone component. Antacids should be taken at least 2 hours before or after ESOMAC D.

What precautions should be taken while using ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE?

Inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions, especially liver disease (contraindicated in moderate to severe impairment), kidney disease, or heart problems. If you experience symptoms like unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools, contact your doctor immediately. Long-term use (more than three months) may require monitoring of blood magnesium levels and can increase the risk of bone fractures and vitamin B12 deficiency. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase stomach acidity and worsen your condition or cause increased drowsiness. This medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. It is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

What happens if a dose of ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE is missed?

If you miss a dose, you should omit the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should ESOMAC D 20 MG CAPSULE be stored?

Store the capsules below 25°C or 30°C in a clean and dry place. Protect them from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets.
