Frequently asked questions
DRAMINATE TAB: Frequently Asked Questions
DRAMINATE TAB, manufactured by RPG LIFE SCIENCES LIMITED, contains Dimenhydrinate, an antihistamine and anticholinergic medication primarily used to prevent and treat symptoms of motion sickness, and other conditions involving nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
What is DRAMINATE TAB used for?
DRAMINATE TAB is primarily used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with radiation sickness, surgery, drug-induced Meniere's disease (an inner ear disorder causing dizziness and balance issues), and vertigo. In some cases, it may also be used for allergic conditions to relieve symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, redness, and watery eyes.
How does DRAMINATE TAB work?
DRAMINATE TAB contains Dimenhydrinate, which acts as both an antihistamine and an anticholinergic. It works by blocking histamine (H₁) receptors and muscarinic (M₁) receptors in the brain areas that control balance and nausea. This helps to reduce the signals that cause motion sickness, leading to relief from nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Its antiemetic properties are mainly attributed to the antagonism of H1 histamine receptors in the vestibular system.
What is the usual dosage of DRAMINATE TAB?
The dosage of DRAMINATE TAB varies depending on age and the condition being treated. For adults and children 12 years and older, the typical dose is 50-100 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not exceeding 400 mg in 24 hours. For motion sickness, the first dose should be taken 30-60 minutes before traveling or engaging in any motion-related activity. Children aged 6-11 years may take 25-50 mg every 6-8 hours, not exceeding 150 mg in 24 hours, and children aged 2-5 years may take 12.5-25 mg every 6-8 hours, not exceeding 75 mg in 24 hours. DRAMINATE TAB can be taken with or without food.
What are the possible side effects of DRAMINATE TAB?
Common side effects of DRAMINATE TAB include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, headache, tiredness, disorientation, tinnitus, palpitations, low blood pressure (hypotension), impaired coordination, abdominal discomfort, and constipation. More serious, but less common, side effects can include difficulty urinating, irregular or fast heartbeat, and mood changes. If side effects persist or worsen, medical attention should be sought.
Is DRAMINATE TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
DRAMINATE TAB (Dimenhydrinate) is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, often classified as a pregnancy category B drug. However, it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks. During breastfeeding, small, occasional doses are not expected to cause adverse effects in infants. However, larger doses or prolonged use might affect the infant or decrease milk supply. It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking DRAMINATE TAB while breastfeeding.
Can DRAMINATE TAB be taken with other medications?
Caution is advised when taking DRAMINATE TAB with other medications, especially those that can cause CNS effects such as sedatives, tranquilizers, or alcohol, as this can increase drowsiness and dizziness. It is important to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including antidepressants, as some interactions may make DRAMINATE TAB less effective or change its mechanism of action. It is physically incompatible with aminophylline, hydrocortisone, phenothiazines, and some barbiturates in solution.
What precautions should be taken when using DRAMINATE TAB?
DRAMINATE TAB can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness and other side effects. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as breathing problems (asthma, emphysema, COPD), glaucoma, seizures, liver or kidney problems, heart problems, or sleep apnea, should use this medication with caution and inform their doctor. It is not recommended for children below 2 years of age.
What happens if a dose of DRAMINATE TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose of DRAMINATE TAB and are taking it regularly, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should DRAMINATE TAB be stored?
DRAMINATE TAB should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep the medication out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication.
