Description
NovoMix 30 FlexPen is a pre-filled pen containing a modern biphasic insulin analogue, manufactured by Novo Nordisk India Pvt Ltd.
Name
- Brand Name: NovoMix 30 FlexPen
Composition
NovoMix 30 FlexPen contains a pre-mixed suspension of insulin aspart. It consists of 30% rapid-acting soluble insulin aspart and 70% longer-acting protamine-crystallised insulin aspart.
Uses
This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents, and children aged 10 years and above. It helps to lower high blood sugar levels by facilitating glucose uptake into muscle and fat cells and inhibiting glucose production from the liver. NovoMix 30 can be used for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, sometimes in combination with oral antidiabetic drugs or other injectable antidiabetic products.
Dosage and Administration
NovoMix 30 FlexPen is administered as a subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or upper arms. Injection sites should be rotated regularly within the same region to reduce the risk of skin changes. It should generally be injected immediately (up to 10 minutes) before a meal, or when necessary, soon after the start of a meal. The dosage is individualized by a physician, with a typical starting dose for Type 2 diabetes being 6 units at breakfast and 6 units at dinner, or 12 units once daily at dinner.
Side Effects
Common side effects include low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), which can manifest as cold sweat, pale skin, headache, rapid heartbeat, nausea, hunger, temporary vision changes, drowsiness, tiredness, nervousness, tremor, anxiety, confusion, or difficulty concentrating. Other common side effects include pain, redness, hives, bruising, swelling, or itching at the injection site, which usually resolve within a few weeks. Serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions and lipodystrophy (depression or thickening of the skin) at the injection site. Weight gain is also possible.
Precautions
Do not use NovoMix 30 if you are allergic to insulin aspart or any of its ingredients. Caution is advised for patients with kidney or liver impairment, as insulin requirements may change. Alcohol consumption can intensify or reduce the glucose-lowering effect of insulin and may mask hypoglycemia symptoms. Certain medications can interact with NovoMix 30, affecting blood sugar levels. NovoMix 30 FlexPen is for subcutaneous use only and should not be administered intravenously or intramuscularly, nor used in insulin pumps. It's crucial to always check the pen label to ensure the correct insulin type is being used.
Storage
Unopened NovoMix 30 FlexPen should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, away from the cooling element, and must not be frozen. Once opened or carried as a spare, it should not be refrigerated and can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for a maximum of 4 weeks. Protect the medicine from excessive heat and light by keeping the pen cap on when not in use. Discard the pen after 4 weeks, even if some medicine remains.
Frequently asked questions
NOVOMIX 30 FLEXPEN by NOVO NORDISK INDIA PVT LTD
What is Novomix 30 Flexpen used for?
Novomix 30 Flexpen is a modern insulin (insulin analogue) used to treat diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents, and children aged 10 years and above. Diabetes is a condition where the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels. It can be used for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, sometimes in combination with other diabetes medications.
How does Novomix 30 Flexpen work?
Novomix 30 is a pre-mixed suspension containing 30% rapid-acting insulin aspart and 70% intermediate-acting protamine-crystallized insulin aspart. Insulin aspart works by facilitating the uptake of glucose into muscle and fat cells and simultaneously inhibiting glucose production from the liver, thereby lowering blood sugar. The rapid-acting component starts working within 10-20 minutes, while the intermediate-acting component provides a prolonged effect for up to 24 hours.
What is the usual dosage for Novomix 30 Flexpen?
The dosage of Novomix 30 Flexpen is individualized and determined by a doctor based on the patient's specific needs and blood glucose response. For patients with type 2 diabetes, a recommended starting dose might be 6 units at breakfast and 6 units at dinner, or 12 units once daily at dinner. Blood glucose monitoring and dose adjustments are crucial for optimal control. It is generally taken immediately (up to 10 minutes) before a meal, or, if necessary, soon after the start of a meal.
What are the possible side effects of Novomix 30 Flexpen?
The most common side effect is low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia), which can manifest as cold sweat, pale skin, headache, rapid heartbeat, feeling sick, hunger, temporary vision changes, drowsiness, weakness, nervousness, tremor, anxiety, confusion, or difficulty concentrating. Other possible side effects include pain, redness, hives, bruising, swelling, or itching at the injection site (these usually resolve within a few weeks). Less common effects can include a depression or thickening of the skin around the injection site (lipodystrophy) or lumps under the skin (cutaneous amyloidosis).
Is Novomix 30 Flexpen safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning a baby, consult your doctor. There is limited clinical experience with insulin aspart in pregnancy, and insulin dose may need to be adjusted during and after pregnancy. Careful control of diabetes is important for the health of the baby. There are no restrictions on treatment with Novomix 30 during breastfeeding, but the dose may need adjustment.
Can Novomix 30 Flexpen be taken with other medications?
NovoMix 30 can interact with other medicines, which may require an adjustment of your insulin dose. Medicines that may cause blood sugar to fall (hypoglycemia) include other medicines for type 2 diabetes, MAOIs (for depression), alpha-blockers (for high blood pressure), non-selective beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, anabolic steroids, and sulfonamides. Medicines that may increase insulin requirements include oral contraceptives, thiazides, glucocorticoids, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics, growth hormone, and danazol. Alcohol can also intensify or reduce the hypoglycaemic effect of insulin. Always inform your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.
What precautions should be taken with Novomix 30 Flexpen?
Always use a new needle for each injection and rotate injection sites within the same region (abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or upper arms) to reduce the risk of skin changes like lipodystrophy. Never inject directly into a vein or muscle, and do not use in insulin pumps. Always carry sugary food or fruit juice to treat mild hypoglycemia. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery, as low or high blood sugar can affect concentration. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, gland issues, or if your diet or exercise routine changes, as these can affect insulin needs.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you forget an insulin dose, your blood sugar level may become too high (hyperglycemia). Contact your doctor for further instructions. Do not stop taking your insulin without speaking to a doctor, as this could lead to severe hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis.
How should Novomix 30 Flexpen be stored?
Unused Novomix 30 Flexpens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, away from the freezer element, and not frozen. Once in use or carried as a spare, Novomix 30 Flexpen should not be kept in the refrigerator but can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 4 weeks. Protect the pen from excessive heat, light, and always keep the cap on when not in use. Discard the Flexpen after 4 weeks of use, even if some medicine remains. Do not use if the insulin does not appear uniformly white and cloudy after resuspension, or if it contains clumps or solid particles.
