HYTRIN 2 by ABBOTT

Name

  • Brand Name: Hytrin 2
  • Common Name: Terazosin Hydrochloride (2 mg)

Composition Hytrin 2 contains 2 mg of Terazosin as monohydrochloride dihydrate. Terazosin is an alpha-1-selective adrenoceptor blocking agent.

Uses Hytrin 2 is primarily used for the treatment of:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure): It relaxes blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): It relieves symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty urinating, weak urine stream, and frequent urination, by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. It may also be used in some cases for heart failure and Raynaud's disease.

Dosage and Administration The dose is adjusted based on individual response.

  • Initial Dose: For all patients, therapy should begin with 1 mg of Hytrin at bedtime to minimize the potential for severe hypotensive effects. The 2 mg tablet is not indicated as initial therapy.
  • Subsequent Doses: Dosage may be slowly increased at weekly or bi-weekly intervals. The usual recommended dose range for BPH is 5 to 10 mg once daily, and for hypertension, it is typically 1 mg to 5 mg administered once a day, though some patients may benefit from doses as high as 20 mg per day. Hytrin can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Dizziness, drowsiness, low energy, swelling of hands/legs, nasal congestion, headache, weakness, nausea, and fatigue.
  • Serious Side Effects: Fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, painful long-lasting erections (priapism), severe allergic reactions, and blurred vision during cataract surgery.

Precautions

  • "First-Dose Effect": Hytrin can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially with the first dose or when re-starting therapy after an interruption, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Patients should rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.
  • Driving and Machinery: Avoid driving or hazardous tasks for at least 12 hours after the initial dose or dosage increases due to potential dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with heart problems, liver disease, or kidney disease. It is contraindicated in individuals with a history of fainting when urinating or low blood pressure.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
  • Cataract Surgery: Inform your eye specialist if you are taking Hytrin, as it may cause complications during cataract surgery.
  • Grapefruit: Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice.

Storage Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, preferably at room temperature (below 25°C or 30°C). Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not store in bathrooms or near sinks.

Frequently asked questions

HYTRIN 2 (terazosin) is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure and symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate gland, known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers.

What is HYTRIN 2 used for?

HYTRIN 2 is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH) in men. For hypertension, it can be used alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications. For BPH, it helps to improve urine flow and reduce symptoms like difficulty urinating.

How does HYTRIN 2 work?

HYTRIN 2, containing the active ingredient terazosin, is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It works by relaxing certain muscles in your body. For BPH, it relaxes the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, which helps to improve urine flow. For high blood pressure, it relaxes muscles in the blood vessels, causing them to widen, which allows blood to flow more easily and lowers blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage for HYTRIN 2?

For both high blood pressure and BPH, the initial dose is typically 1 mg taken once daily at bedtime. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose to 2 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg once daily, depending on your response and the condition being treated. Some patients with hypertension may benefit from doses as high as 20 mg per day. It is crucial to start with the 1 mg dose at bedtime to minimize potential side effects.

What are the possible side effects of HYTRIN 2?

Common side effects can include dizziness, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, stuffy nose, blurry vision, nausea, and swelling in the ankles, hands, or feet. More serious side effects, though less common, require immediate medical attention. These include severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat), a sudden and significant drop in blood pressure (causing dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up), or a prolonged and painful erection (priapism).

Is HYTRIN 2 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

The safety of HYTRIN 2 during pregnancy has not been established, and it is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks, as animal studies suggest it might affect labor. It is also unknown if terazosin passes into breast milk, so caution is advised if you are breastfeeding. You should inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can HYTRIN 2 be taken with other medications?

Yes, but caution is necessary. HYTRIN 2 can interact with other medications, potentially increasing the risk of low blood pressure. This includes other blood pressure-lowering drugs (like diuretics or beta-blockers) and medications for erectile dysfunction (such as sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil). It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, herbs, or supplements you are taking. Alcohol can also increase the risk of dizziness and fainting when taken with HYTRIN 2.

What precautions should be taken while using HYTRIN 2?

Due to the risk of a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially with the first dose or when the dose is increased, take HYTRIN 2 at bedtime and rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. Avoid driving or operating machinery for at least 12 hours after the first dose or any dose increase until you know how the medication affects you. Inform your eye doctor if you are planning cataract or glaucoma surgery, as HYTRIN 2 can sometimes cause complications during these procedures. Your doctor should also rule out prostate cancer before treating BPH, as the symptoms can be similar.

What happens if a dose of HYTRIN 2 is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double or extra dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss multiple doses for several days, contact your healthcare provider before restarting the medication, as a lower dose may be needed.

How should HYTRIN 2 be stored?

Store HYTRIN 2 at room temperature, typically between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F), in a tightly closed container. Keep it away from moisture, heat, and direct light, and out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused or expired medication properly.
