Description
SILVEREX SSD CREAM
SILVEREX SSD CREAM is a topical antimicrobial medication manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd..
-
Composition SILVEREX SSD CREAM contains a dual-action formula of two active ingredients:
- Chlorhexidine Gluconate (0.2% w/w): An antiseptic and disinfectant that strongly binds to the skin, killing microorganisms and preventing infection.
- Silver Sulfadiazine (0.5% w/w): A sulfa antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with the production of folic acid, essential for bacterial multiplication. It slowly releases silver ions, which are toxic to a wide range of bacteria and fungi.
-
Uses SILVEREX SSD CREAM is primarily used to treat and prevent infections in burn wounds, particularly second- and third-degree burns. It also aids in accelerating the healing process by creating a protective barrier against various infectious microorganisms. Additionally, it can be beneficial for other infected skin lesions such as ulcers, abrasions, and other skin injuries prone to bacterial growth.

Frequently asked questions
What is Silverex SSD Cream used for?
Silverex SSD Cream is primarily used to prevent and treat infections in second and third-degree burn wounds. It can also be beneficial for managing infected skin ulcers, abrasions, and other skin lesions susceptible to infection.
How does Silverex SSD Cream work?
This cream contains a combination of two active ingredients: Silver sulfadiazine and Chlorhexidine gluconate. Silver sulfadiazine is a sulfa antibiotic that works by inhibiting the production of folic acid, a vital nutrient for bacterial multiplication, thereby destroying bacteria. Chlorhexidine gluconate acts as an antiseptic, binding strongly to the skin to kill microorganisms and prevent infection.
What is the usual dosage of Silverex SSD Cream?
Silverex SSD Cream is for external use only. A thin layer (approximately 3-5 mm thick) should be applied to the clean, dry affected area, typically once or twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. It can be applied using an applicator, sterile gloves, or a clean cotton ball/swab. Burn areas should be kept covered with the cream at all times, and it should be reapplied if it rubs off. Treatment usually continues until the wound is completely healed or is ready for skin grafting.
What are the possible side effects of Silverex SSD Cream?
Common side effects include itching, irritation, burning sensation, and redness at the application site, as well as skin rash or discoloration (hyperpigmentation). Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, trouble breathing), severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, kidney damage, or blood problems. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, consult your doctor immediately.
Is Silverex SSD Cream safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Silverex SSD Cream is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially near or at term, due to potential risks to the unborn baby, such as kernicterus. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, and under strict medical advice. Breastfeeding: It is not known if Silverex SSD Cream passes into breast milk. However, sulfonamides can be excreted in human milk and may cause serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, particularly premature infants, those under two months old, or infants with certain disorders like G6PD deficiency. Therefore, caution is advised, and you should consult your doctor to weigh the benefits against the risks.
Can Silverex SSD Cream be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently using, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products. Silverex SSD Cream should not be used concurrently with enzymatic debriding agents (e.g., collagenase, papain, trypsin) as the silver can inactivate these enzymes. It may also interact with certain local anesthetics, increasing the risk of methemoglobinemia, and potentially affect other medications like insulin or certain neuromuscular blockers.
What precautions should be taken while using Silverex SSD Cream?
This cream is for external use only; avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or ears. Rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not use the cream in large amounts or for longer than prescribed. Inform your doctor if you have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, or kidney or liver problems. Fabrics that come into contact with the cream may burn more easily, so avoid smoking or open flames. It is not recommended for premature infants or newborns younger than two months.
What happens if a dose of Silverex SSD Cream is missed?
If you miss an application, apply the cream as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Silverex SSD Cream be stored?
Store Silverex SSD Cream in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and at room temperature (below 30°C). Keep the tube tightly sealed when not in use to prevent exposure to air and moisture. Always keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not freeze the cream.
