Frequently asked questions

VENLOR XR 150 by Cipla Ltd. is an extended-release medication primarily used to treat various mental health conditions. Its active ingredient is venlafaxine, which belongs to a class of antidepressants known as serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

What is VENLOR XR 150 used for?

VENLOR XR 150 is used to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), and Panic Disorder. It may also be prescribed for certain types of chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain, and sometimes for menopausal symptoms.

How does VENLOR XR 150 work?

This medicine contains venlafaxine, which is a Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). It works by increasing the levels of certain natural chemical messengers in the brain, namely serotonin and noradrenaline. These chemicals help to regulate mood and pain signals, thereby improving mood, reducing anxiety, and alleviating pain.

What is the usual dosage for VENLOR XR 150?

VENLOR XR 150 is an extended-release capsule typically taken once daily with food, preferably at the same time each day. For depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder, the usual starting dose is often 75 mg per day, which a doctor may gradually increase if needed, up to a maximum of 375 mg daily for depression. For Panic Disorder, treatment usually begins with a lower dose of 37.5 mg daily, which is then gradually increased. The maximum dose for GAD, SAD, and Panic Disorder is generally 225 mg per day. The capsule should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

What are the possible side effects of VENLOR XR 150?

Common side effects include nausea, sweating and hot flashes, headaches, dry mouth, dizziness, sleepiness or insomnia (difficulty sleeping), constipation, and sexual dysfunction. More serious but less common side effects can include serotonin syndrome (a condition caused by excessive serotonin levels), elevated blood pressure, an increased risk of bleeding, seizures, significant mood changes, and low sodium levels. It's important to monitor for suicidal thoughts, particularly at the beginning of treatment or during dose changes.

Is VENLOR XR 150 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: Consult your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. While some studies suggest a possible slightly increased risk of certain birth defects, others have not shown this. Taking venlafaxine in the later stages of pregnancy may lead to temporary withdrawal symptoms in the newborn and a slightly increased risk of bleeding after delivery. Your doctor will weigh the benefits of treating your condition against the potential risks to the baby.

During Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor. Venlafaxine passes into breast milk in small amounts. While some experts advise caution, others consider it acceptable with careful monitoring. Breastfed infants, especially newborns, should be observed for excessive sleepiness, poor feeding, or irritability.

Can VENLOR XR 150 be taken with other medications?

VENLOR XR 150 should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI, and at least 7 days should pass after stopping VENLOR XR before starting an MAOI, due to the risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Concomitant use with other serotonergic drugs (e.g., SSRIs, triptans, lithium, St. John's Wort, tramadol) also increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Taking it with blood thinners (like warfarin) or NSAIDs (like aspirin) may increase the risk of bleeding. Always inform your doctor about all other medications and herbal supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while on VENLOR XR 150?

Avoid alcohol consumption as it can worsen side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness. VENLOR XR 150 can cause dizziness, confusion, sleepiness, and blurred vision, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you understand how it affects you. It is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age. Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart conditions, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low sodium levels, a history of seizures, or narrow-angle glaucoma. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

What happens if a dose of VENLOR XR 150 is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should VENLOR XR 150 be stored?

VENLOR XR 150 should be stored below 25°C and kept out of the sight and reach of children.
