Frequently asked questions
Nortipan Tablet, manufactured by Medley Pharmaceuticals under the Osteokare division, is a combination medication primarily used for the treatment of neuropathic pain. It contains two active ingredients: Pregabalin (75 mg) and Nortriptyline (10 mg).
Here are some frequently asked questions about Nortipan Tablet:
What is Nortipan Tablet used for?
Nortipan Tablet is prescribed to treat various types of neuropathic pain, which is pain caused by damaged or overactive nerves. This includes conditions such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles), spinal cord injury, restless leg syndrome, epilepsy, seizures, fibromyalgia, and generalized anxiety disorder.
How does Nortipan Tablet work?
Nortipan Tablet works through a dual mechanism due to its two active components. Pregabalin, an anticonvulsant, modulates calcium channel activity in nerve cells, which reduces the release of pain-transmitting neurotransmitters and calms overactive nerves. Nortriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant, increases the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain, thereby blocking pain signals and helping to improve mood.
What is the usual dosage for Nortipan Tablet?
The dosage of Nortipan Tablet is determined by your doctor based on your specific medical condition and response to treatment. It should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, preferably at the same time each day to maintain consistent medicine levels. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken.
What are the possible side effects of Nortipan Tablet?
Common side effects can include dizziness, drowsiness or sleepiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, weight gain, constipation, nausea, and difficulty urinating. Other possible side effects may include peripheral edema (swelling in the hands or feet), decreased sexual interest, tiredness, confusion, increased heart rate, and uncoordinated body movements. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is Nortipan Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Nortipan Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, as animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. If you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking this medication, inform your doctor immediately. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding, as the medicine may pass into breast milk and could harm the newborn baby. Always consult your doctor for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can Nortipan Tablet be taken with other medications?
Nortipan Tablet can interact with various medications and substances. It is important to inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, herbal preparations, and dietary supplements you are currently taking. Particular caution is advised with alcohol, as it can significantly increase side effects like drowsiness and dizziness. Interactions have been noted with medications such as cimetidine, clonidine, diltiazem, fluconazole, fluoxetine, lorazepam, nabilone, oxycodone, certain blood thinners, antidiabetic agents, and other antidepressants.
What precautions should be taken while taking Nortipan Tablet?
Several precautions should be observed when taking Nortipan Tablet. Avoid consuming alcohol due to increased drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you understand how the medication affects you, as it can cause sleepiness and impaired alertness. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, nausea, headache, or mood swings; gradual tapering is usually required. Monitor for any unusual mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts and report them to your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems, diabetes, a history of seizures, or glaucoma. Maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise can help manage potential weight gain.
What happens if a dose of Nortipan Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Nortipan Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
How should Nortipan Tablet be stored?
Nortipan Tablet should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and direct light. Keep it in a clean and dry place, and ensure it is out of the reach of children and pets.
