OXYSPAS 5 TABLET

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is a medication primarily used to manage symptoms associated with an overactive bladder. It works by relaxing the bladder muscles, helping to improve bladder control and reduce urinary discomfort.

Composition

  • Active Ingredient: Each uncoated tablet contains Oxybutynin chloride 5 mg.

Uses

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, including urinary incontinence (urine leakage), urgent urination, and frequent urination.
  • Increased night-time urination (nocturia).
  • Dysuria (painful or difficult urination).
  • Night-time bed-wetting in children above 5 years when other treatments have been ineffective.

Dosage and Administration

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is for oral administration and should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it should not be chewed, divided, or crushed. It can be taken with or without food. Always follow your doctor's advice regarding the frequency and duration of this medication.

  • Adults: The usual dose is 5 mg two or three times a day. This may be increased to a maximum of 5 mg four times a day if side effects are tolerated.
  • Elderly: A lower dose of 2.5 mg twice a day may be sufficient, especially for frail elderly patients, as the elimination half-life is increased.
  • Children (Over 5 Years of Age): For neurogenic bladder instability, the usual dose is 2.5 mg twice a day, which can be titrated upwards to 5 mg two or three times a day if well-tolerated. Not recommended for children under 5 years of age.

Side Effects

Common side effects of OXYSPAS 5 TABLET include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Drowsiness/Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dry eyes
  • Urinary retention
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry skin
  • Facial flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Cough, nasal discomfort, urinary tract infection, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping)

Serious, though rare, side effects may include hallucinations, confusion, rapid heartbeat, severe allergic reactions, heatstroke, or difficulty urinating.

Precautions

  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, severe ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, or gastrointestinal obstructive disorders. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney impairment, autonomic neuropathy, hyperthyroidism, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, tachycardia, hypertension, prostatic hypertrophy, or hiatus hernia associated with reflux oesophagitis.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: OXYSPAS may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may enhance drowsiness and other side effects.
  • Heat Exposure: This medicine can cause decreased sweating, increasing the risk of heat prostration in high environmental temperatures. Avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; the doctor will assess benefits versus risks. Oxybutynin passes into breastmilk in small amounts, so breastfeeding is generally not advised during treatment.
  • Drug Interactions: Exercise caution with other anticholinergic agents (e.g., atropine, hyoscyamine) as this can increase anticholinergic effects. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) may increase oxybutynin levels, potentially enhancing effects and side effects. Inform your doctor about all medicines, herbal products, and over-the-counter medicines you are consuming.

Storage

Store OXYSPAS tablets below 30°C. Protect it from light and moisture. Keep it away from children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is OXYSPAS 5 TABLET used for?

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is primarily used to manage symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). This includes reducing urinary urgency (a sudden, strong need to urinate), urinary frequency (needing to urinate often), and urge incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine associated with a sudden urge). It can also be prescribed to children over five years of age for nighttime bedwetting when other treatments have not been effective.

How does OXYSPAS 5 TABLET work?

The active ingredient in OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is oxybutynin, which is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic agent. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bladder and inhibiting the muscarinic action of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger responsible for bladder muscle contractions. This action helps to reduce involuntary bladder spasms, increase the bladder's capacity to hold urine, and diminish the urge to urinate.

What is the usual dosage for OXYSPAS 5 TABLET?

For adults, the typical starting dose is 5 mg, taken two or three times a day. This dosage may be adjusted by your doctor up to a maximum of 5 mg four times a day, depending on your response and tolerance to side effects. For children over 5 years old, the usual dose for neurogenic bladder instability or nocturnal enuresis is 2.5 mg twice a day, which can be increased to 5 mg two or three times daily if needed. It is important to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration. Some sources suggest taking it on an empty stomach, at least an hour before a meal.

What are the possible side effects of OXYSPAS 5 TABLET?

Common side effects may include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, dry eyes, dry skin, and urinary retention. Most of these side effects are usually mild and temporary. If any of these side effects persist or become bothersome, it is important to consult your doctor.

Is OXYSPAS 5 TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, OXYSPAS 5 TABLET should be used with caution and only if the potential benefits justify the risks, as there is limited data on its safety in human pregnancy. It is generally not recommended during breastfeeding, as small amounts of oxybutynin can pass into breast milk. Always consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can OXYSPAS 5 TABLET be taken with other medications?

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET can interact with certain other medications. Concomitant use with other anticholinergic agents (such as atropine or hyoscyamine) can increase the risk of side effects. Medicines that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme (e.g., itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) may increase oxybutynin levels in the body, potentially enhancing its effects and side effects. It may also interact with medications for Parkinson's disease (e.g., amantadine, levodopa), certain antipsychotics (e.g., clozapine), and some heart medications (e.g., quinidine, digoxin). Additionally, by reducing gastric motility, oxybutynin might affect the absorption of other drugs. Always inform your doctor about all other medicines, including over-the-counter and herbal products, you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using OXYSPAS 5 TABLET?

Caution is advised for elderly individuals, children over 5 years old, and patients with conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma, gastrointestinal obstructions, myasthenia gravis, or significant liver or kidney impairment. This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, so it's important to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you understand how it affects you. Alcohol consumption should be limited or avoided as it can enhance these side effects. OXYSPAS 5 TABLET can also decrease sweating, which may lead to heat prostration in high environmental temperatures.

What happens if a dose of OXYSPAS 5 TABLET is missed?

If you miss a dose of OXYSPAS 5 TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should OXYSPAS 5 TABLET be stored?

OXYSPAS 5 TABLET should be stored below 30°C. Keep it protected from light and moisture, and ensure it is out of the reach of children and pets.
