MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP 5 ML

MAHAFLOX LP Eye Drop, manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd., is an ophthalmic solution prescribed for various eye conditions involving bacterial infection and inflammation.

Composition

MAHAFLOX LP Eye Drop contains two active ingredients:

  • Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5% w/v): A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause redness, swelling, and itching.
  • Moxifloxacin (0.5% w/v): A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are essential for bacterial growth and survival, thereby killing the bacteria.

Uses

This medicine is used to treat:

  • Bacterial eye infections with associated inflammation.
  • Steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eyes, particularly where there is a risk of bacterial infection.
  • Post-ocular surgeries to prevent infections and manage inflammation, pain, redness, and swelling.
  • Eye inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, severe acne, iritis (inflammation of the iris), uveitis (inflammation of the uvea), eye injury, radiation, and chemical burns.
  • Conditions such as blepharokeratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, meibomitis, and non-ulcerative keratitis.

Dosage and Administration

MAHAFLOX LP Eye Drop is for external ophthalmic use only. Typically, the recommended dosage is 2 drops instilled into the affected eye 4 times daily for 7 days, or as advised by a healthcare professional.

Directions for Use:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before and after use.
  2. Gently shake the bottle before each use.
  3. Tilt the head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  4. Hold the dropper above the eye without touching the tip to the eye, eyelids, or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  5. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket.
  6. Close your eyes for a few minutes (1-2 minutes) without blinking or squeezing, and gently press a finger to the inside corner of the eye to prevent the liquid from draining out.
  7. Wipe off any excess liquid with a tissue.
  8. Replace the dropper cap after each use. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent recurrence.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to Loteprednol, Moxifloxacin, or any other ingredients.
  • Infections: Not effective against viral or fungal eye infections. Do not use if you have herpes simplex, fungal eye issues, or mycobacterial eye infections.
  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection. Remove contact lenses at least 15 minutes before instilling the drops and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the solution may contain Benzalkonium chloride.
  • Vision: May cause temporary blurring of vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears.
  • Prolonged Use: Long-term use (beyond 10 days) may lead to increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, and cataracts. Regular eye pressure monitoring is advised for extended use.
  • Specific Eye Conditions: Use with caution and under medical supervision if you have a history of cataracts, glaucoma, high intraocular pressure, damaged cornea, ulcers, or open lesions in the eye.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using if pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is limited information on its safety and a component may pass into breast milk.
  • Pediatric Use: Not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age due to lack of safety and efficacy data.

Frequently asked questions

What is MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP used for?

MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP is a prescription medicine primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections, especially when accompanied by inflammation. It is also effective in managing pain, redness, and swelling that may occur after eye surgery. It can also be used for conditions such as blepharokeratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, meibomitis, and non-ulcerative keratitis.

How does MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP work?

MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP is a combination of two active ingredients: Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol. Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are crucial for bacterial cell division and replication, thereby killing the bacteria. Loteprednol is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, swelling, redness, and itching by suppressing the release of inflammatory substances (prostaglandins) in the body.

What is the usual dosage for MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP?

The usual dosage of MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP should be as prescribed by your doctor. It is typically instilled 2-3 times a day for at least a week, or as directed by the doctor. Always adhere to the prescribed dosage and duration, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent recurrence.

What are the possible side effects of MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP?

Common side effects may include eye irritation, discomfort in the eye, dry eye, redness of eyes, burning or stinging sensation, itching of eyes, and temporary blurred vision. More serious but less common side effects can include increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma), vision changes, or new or worsening infections. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary and advised by a doctor. Limited information is available regarding its safety in these situations, and a component of the eye drop may pass into breast milk.

Can MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP be taken with other medications?

Since MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP is used topically, it is less likely to interact with many other medicines. However, moxifloxacin (a component) may increase the effect of oral anticoagulants like warfarin and heparin, potentially leading to prolonged clotting time. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, including eye drops or ointments, you are currently using to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken when using MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP?

  • Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection; consult your doctor regarding contact lens use during treatment, as the medicine may contain additives like Benzalkonium chloride that can discolor lenses.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye or eyelids, to prevent contamination.
  • Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you feel better, to prevent decreased effectiveness or re-infection.
  • MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP may cause short-term blurring of vision after instillation; avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.
  • Prolonged use of this medicine may increase intraocular pressure and the risk of cataracts or other eye problems. It should be used with caution if you have a history of cataracts, glaucoma, or high intraocular pressure.
  • Not recommended for children below 18 years of age due to lack of safety and efficacy data.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP, instill it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill extra drops to compensate for the missed dose.

How should MAHAFLOX LP EYE DROP be stored?

Store the medicine in a closed container at a temperature less than 25°C (below 30°C) in a cool and dry place, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
