Description

VONEFI 20MG Tablet

VONEFI 20MG Tablet, manufactured by Abbott India Ltd., is a medication used to manage conditions related to excessive stomach acid.

  • Name:

    • Brand Name: VONEFI 20 TABLET
    • Common Name: Vonoprazan (20mg)
  • Composition:

    • VONEFI 20 TABLET contains Vonoprazan at a strength of 20mg. Vonoprazan is a Potassium-Competitive Acid Blocker (P-CAB) that works by inhibiting a specific protein in the stomach lining crucial for producing stomach acid, thereby reducing acid secretion.
  • Uses: VONEFI 20 TABLET is prescribed for various gastrointestinal issues caused by excessive stomach acid:

    • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and its symptoms like heartburn, acidity, and indigestion.
    • Reflux or erosive esophagitis.
    • Stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers, including prevention of recurrence during low-dose aspirin or NSAID use.
    • As an adjunctive therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection, in combination with antibiotics.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • Take VONEFI 20 TABLET as advised by your physician.
    • It can be taken with or without food.
    • Swallow the medicine whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew.
    • The doctor determines the correct dose and duration based on age, body weight, and health condition. It is usually taken twice a day.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common Side Effects: Stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, nausea, high blood pressure, headache, changes in taste, vaginal yeast infection, and cold-like symptoms.
    • Serious Side Effects: Inform your doctor immediately if you experience kidney problems (e.g., low urine output, bloody urine), severe diarrhea with stomach pain and fever, bone fractures (hip, wrist, spine), or severe skin reactions (rashes, blistering, peeling, bleeding with fever, chills, body aches).
  • Precautions:

    • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or low blood magnesium, calcium, or potassium levels.
    • Caution is advised if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the effects of Vonoprazan on unborn babies or through breast milk are not fully known.
    • Do not take if allergic to Vonoprazan.
    • VONEFI 20 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with gastric malignancy, acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, or Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea.
    • Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, hypomagnesemia, and an increased risk of fundic gland polyps.
    • Avoid alcohol, spicy/acidic/fatty foods, caffeine, and smoking, as these can worsen symptoms and affect treatment efficacy.
    • Consult your doctor about any other medications, especially anti-HIV medicines like Rilpivirine, as interactions can occur.
  • Storage:

    • Keep VONEFI 20 TABLET out of reach of children.
    • Store at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, and in a cool and dry place away from sunlight.
Frequently asked questions

VONEFI 20MG TAB contains Vonoprazan, a medication belonging to a class of drugs called potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs). It is prescribed to reduce stomach acid and treat various gastrointestinal conditions.

What is VONEFI 20MG TAB used for?

VONEFI 20MG TAB is primarily used to heal and relieve symptoms of erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid) and heartburn associated with both erosive and non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also used to treat stomach ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers) and in combination with certain antibiotics (like amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, a common cause of ulcers. Additionally, it can be used to prevent the recurrence of gastric or duodenal ulcers during NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) administration.

How does VONEFI 20MG TAB work?

VONEFI (Vonoprazan) works by blocking the H+, K+-ATPase enzyme system, also known as the proton pump, located in the parietal cells of the stomach lining. This enzyme is responsible for the final step of stomach acid production. By competitively and reversibly inhibiting this pump, Vonoprazan effectively reduces the amount of acid secreted into the stomach, thereby promoting healing and relieving symptoms.

What is the usual dosage of VONEFI 20MG TAB?

The dosage of VONEFI 20MG TAB depends on the condition being treated:

  • For healing erosive esophagitis: 20 mg once daily for 8 weeks.
  • For maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis: 10 mg once daily for up to 6 months.
  • For relief of heartburn associated with non-erosive GERD: 10 mg once daily for 4 weeks.
  • For H. pylori eradication: 20 mg twice daily for 14 days, in combination with specific antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin and clarithromycin).
  • For gastric ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 8 weeks.
  • For duodenal ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 6 weeks.

VONEFI can be taken with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed.

What are the possible side effects of VONEFI 20MG TAB?

Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain or distension, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth, vomiting, flatulence, and belching.

More serious side effects, though rare, require immediate medical attention. These include severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, trouble breathing), signs of kidney problems (e.g., low urine output, blood in urine, acute tubulointerstitial nephritis), severe or watery diarrhea (which may be bloody and indicate Clostridioides difficile infection), bone pain or fractures (especially with long-term or high-dose use), symptoms of low vitamin B12 or magnesium (e.g., irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, tingling/numbness, dizziness, seizures, mood changes).

Is VONEFI 20MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: There is limited clinical data on the use of VONEFI (Vonoprazan) during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown embryo-fetal toxicity at high exposures. Therefore, it should generally not be administered to pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. If VONEFI is part of an H. pylori eradication regimen that includes clarithromycin, be aware that clarithromycin may harm an unborn baby and such combinations are often avoided during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: It is not known if Vonoprazan passes into human breast milk. Animal studies indicate that it is excreted in milk. The manufacturer recommends pumping and discarding breast milk during treatment with Vonoprazan and for two days after the last dose. An alternative medication may be preferred while breastfeeding.

Can VONEFI 20MG TAB be taken with other medications?

VONEFI can interact with other medications, so it is crucial to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.

  • Avoid taking with: Rilpivirine-containing products (used to treat HIV).
  • Use with caution/monitor with: Anticoagulants (like warfarin, due to increased bleeding risk), some antifungals (like ketoconazole, due to altered absorption), and other acid-reducing medications. Vonoprazan can inhibit certain liver enzymes (CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2D6, CYP2B6), which may affect the metabolism of other drugs. It may also reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel. Iron salt tablets and St. John's Wort may also interact.

What precautions should be taken while taking VONEFI 20MG TAB?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, osteopenia or osteoporosis (thinning of bones), or low levels of calcium, magnesium, or potassium in your blood. Long-term use of acid-reducing medications like Vonoprazan may increase the risk of certain infections, bone fractures (especially of the hip, wrist, or spine), and deficiencies in vitamin B12 and magnesium. It is important to note that a symptomatic response to VONEFI does not rule out the presence of gastric cancer, and further diagnostic testing may be needed if symptoms persist or recur. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

What happens if a dose of VONEFI 20MG TAB is missed?

  • For once-daily dosing (e.g., for erosive esophagitis): If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is within 12 hours of your usual scheduled time. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
  • For twice-daily dosing (e.g., for H. pylori infection): If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is within 4 hours of your usual scheduled time. If more than 4 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take a double dose.

How should VONEFI 20MG TAB be stored?

Store VONEFI 20MG TAB in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep it away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and do not freeze it. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
