RANTAC RD CAPSULE

RANTAC RD CAPSULE is a combination medication manufactured by J.B. CHEMICALS & PHARAMCEUTICALS LTD., commonly prescribed to manage various gastrointestinal issues.

  • Composition Each capsule contains Rabeprazole (20mg) and Domperidone (30mg). Rabeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), works by reducing the production of stomach acid, while Domperidone, a prokinetic agent, enhances the movement of the stomach and intestines, facilitating food passage and reducing nausea and vomiting.

  • Uses RANTAC RD CAPSULE is primarily used to treat conditions associated with excessive stomach acid and impaired gastrointestinal motility. These include:

    • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and acid reflux
    • Heartburn
    • Peptic ulcers (stomach and duodenal ulcers)
    • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition causing overproduction of acid)
    • Gastritis, dyspepsia (indigestion), and gastroparesis
    • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dosage and Administration Typically, one capsule is taken once daily, preferably before the first meal of the day or on an empty stomach, as directed by a physician. The capsule should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness, dry mouth, stomach pain, flatulence, weakness, infection, rash, itching, painful or tender breasts, and back pain. Serious side effects can involve low magnesium and vitamin B12 levels with prolonged use, and potential heart rhythm problems, especially in individuals with pre-existing cardiac conditions or those taking QT-prolonging medications.

  • Precautions Inform your doctor if you have allergies to rabeprazole or domperidone, a history of gastric cancer, liver or kidney disease, low magnesium levels, or heart problems. Caution is advised with alcohol consumption. This medicine may interact with blood thinners, antifungals, anti-HIV drugs, iron supplements, and anti-cancer medications. Prolonged use may lead to lupus erythematosus and an increased risk of bone fractures. It is generally not recommended for children below 16 years of age. Since it may cause dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Storage Store RANTAC RD CAPSULE in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature typically below 25°C or 30°C. Keep the medicine in its original container and out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about RANTAC RD CAPSULE:

What is Rantac RD Capsule used for?

Rantac RD Capsule is primarily used to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid and digestive motility issues. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux, heartburn, acidity, indigestion, gastritis, and peptic ulcers (stomach and duodenal ulcers). It is also used to manage nausea and vomiting, and in conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which involves overproduction of stomach acid.

How does Rantac RD Capsule work?

Rantac RD Capsule combines two active ingredients: Rabeprazole and Domperidone. Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid by blocking a specific enzyme in the stomach lining responsible for acid secretion. Domperidone is a prokinetic agent that increases the movement and contractions of the stomach and intestines, helping food move more easily through the digestive system and relieving nausea and vomiting by blocking dopamine receptors.

What is the usual dosage for Rantac RD Capsule?

Typically, one Rantac RD Capsule is taken daily, preferably before meals (on an empty stomach), often in the morning. The exact dosage and duration of treatment may vary based on your medical condition and response to the medicine, and should always be as advised by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Rantac RD Capsule?

Common side effects can include headache, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, dry mouth, flatulence, vomiting, dizziness, and weakness. Less common side effects reported include constipation, back pain, cough, and pharyngitis. If you experience persistent or severe side effects, or symptoms like irregular heartbeat, decreased urination, edema, rash, or fever, you should seek medical attention. Prolonged use may lead to deficiencies in vitamin B12 and magnesium, and an increased risk of bone fractures.

Is Rantac RD Capsule safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It is crucial to consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding before taking Rantac RD Capsule. While some sources suggest it might be safe with a doctor's guidance, limited safety information is available for pregnancy, and animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. Domperidone, one of the active ingredients, passes into breast milk. Your doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the risks for you and your baby.

Can Rantac RD Capsule be taken with other medications?

Rantac RD Capsule can interact with certain other medications, potentially affecting their effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. These include some antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole, fluconazole), antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine), antipsychotics (e.g., haloperidol), blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, clopidogrel), anti-HIV drugs (e.g., atazanavir), iron supplements, and certain cardiac and anti-cancer medications. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter medicines, nutritional or vitamin supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using Rantac RD Capsule?

Avoid using Rantac RD Capsule if you have a known allergy to rabeprazole, domperidone, or any other ingredients in the capsule. Exercise caution and inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, Parkinson's disease, or certain heart conditions (like heart failure, arrhythmias, or electrolyte imbalance). It is generally not recommended for children, especially below 5 or 16 years of age depending on the source. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medicine as it may worsen acidity and increase the risk of side effects. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating machinery. Long-term use requires monitoring for potential vitamin B12 and magnesium deficiencies and increased risk of bone fractures.

What happens if a dose of Rantac RD Capsule is missed?

If you miss a dose of Rantac RD Capsule, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Rantac RD Capsule be stored?

Rantac RD Capsule should be stored below 25°C or 30°C in a cool and dry place. Keep the medicine in its original container, tightly closed, and protect it from light and moisture. Always keep it out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
