Description

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP 3 ML

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP is an ophthalmic solution manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd..

Composition

The active ingredient in NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP is Nepafenac 0.30% w/v. Nepafenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are chemical messengers responsible for pain, redness, and inflammation.

Uses

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP is primarily used to reduce pain and inflammation following cataract surgery. It also helps in faster recovery and can reduce the risk of macular edema (retinal swelling) in diabetic patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Dosage and Administration

This medicine is for ophthalmic (for eye) use only and should be used as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the drops.
  • Shake the bottle well before use.
  • Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket, and instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the eye or any other surface with the dropper tip.
  • Close your eyes gently for 1-2 minutes after application and apply gentle pressure on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) to prevent drainage.
  • Avoid blinking or rubbing the eye.
  • If using multiple eye medications, maintain a 5-10 minute gap between applications.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication; remove them before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
  • Typically, the dosage is one drop three times daily for up to 2 weeks after surgery, or as advised by a physician. Do not use for more than 14 days after cataract surgery unless suggested by a doctor.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Blurred vision, vision change, or reduced vision.
  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes (temporary).
  • Foreign body sensation in eyes.
  • Eye irritation, itching, discharge, swelling, crusting, or pain.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Increased intraocular pressure.
  • Stickiness.

Consult your doctor if side effects persist or worsen.

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially blood thinners (like warfarin, aspirin) or other NSAIDs, as concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and in elderly patients or children; consult a doctor before use.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of eye diseases or disorders, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, dry eye syndrome, or bleeding problems.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight while undergoing treatment.
  • Do not use if allergic to nepafenac, other ingredients, or any other NSAIDs.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
  • This medicine is generally meant for short-term use post-surgery; prolonged use may increase the risk of corneal damage or slow healing.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Keep away from children and pets. Discard the medicine 4 weeks after first opening the bottle. Do not use if the contents are a different color or if particles are present, or if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently asked questions

What is NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP used for?

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP is primarily used in adults to manage and relieve eye pain and inflammation (redness and swelling) following cataract surgery. It can also be used to reduce the risk of macular edema (swelling at the back of the eye) after cataract surgery, especially in diabetic patients.

How does NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP work?

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP contains Nepafenac, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers called prostaglandins in the eye that are responsible for causing pain, inflammation, and swelling.

What is the usual dosage for NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP?

The recommended adult dosage is one drop of NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP into the affected eye(s) three times daily. This typically starts one day before surgery and continues for about two weeks after surgery, or as advised by your ophthalmologist. The duration of treatment may be up to 4 to 6 weeks.

What are the possible side effects of NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP?

Common side effects may include visual disturbances, blurred vision, a sensation of a foreign body in the eye, eye irritation, eye pain, eye itching, and reduced vision. If you experience severe eye pain with redness, persistent stinging, or any other troublesome or worsening side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Is NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary by a physician, especially during the last three months of pregnancy, as it may harm the developing baby. Women of child-bearing potential are advised to use suitable contraceptive methods during treatment.

For breastfeeding women, NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP should be used with caution as it may pass into breast milk. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding.

Can NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medicines, herbal preparations, and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP should be used with caution if you are taking:

  • Other eye drops for glaucoma (e.g., timolol).
  • Medicines to reduce blood clotting (e.g., warfarin, aspirin), as this may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, piroxicam).
  • Topical steroids on the eye (e.g., hydrocortisone, mometasone).

If you are using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between each application to prevent dilution.

What precautions should be taken when using NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP?

  • Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative in the medicine can discolour soft contact lenses.
  • Dropper Tip: Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to your eye, eyelids, fingers, or any other surface to prevent contamination and infection.
  • Underlying Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, arthritis, bleeding problems, or other eye problems such as infections or glaucoma.
  • Asthma: It is not recommended for use in patients with a history of asthma or skin reactions induced by NSAIDs.
  • Driving and Machinery: NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP can cause blurred vision temporarily after use. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear.
  • Duration of Use: Do not use for longer than 14 days after surgery unless specifically recommended by your doctor. Avoid using it beyond one month after opening the medicine, even if it is not expired.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

How should NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP be stored?

Store NEPASTAR OD EYE DROP below 30°C in a cool and dry place, away from the reach of children. Protect it from direct sunlight. Replace the cap tightly after each use.
