  • Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration based on age, body weight, and disease condition.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the frequently asked questions about ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP by Cipla Ltd:

What is ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP used for?

ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP is a mucolytic (cough/sputum thinner) medication primarily used to manage symptoms associated with acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. It is also used for other respiratory tract disorders characterized by excessive or thick mucus production, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and conditions requiring an expectorant.

How does ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP work?

ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP contains Erdosteine, which is a prodrug, meaning it becomes active after being metabolized in the body. Its active metabolites contain free sulfhydryl (thiol) groups that break down the disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, which are the main components of mucus. This action reduces the viscosity and elasticity of mucus, making it thinner and easier to cough up and clear from the respiratory tract. Erdosteine also exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help protect lung tissues.

What is the usual dosage for ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP?

The typical adult dosage is one 300 mg capsule taken twice daily. The maximum duration of therapy for acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis is generally 10 days. The capsule should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP?

Common side effects include epigastric pain (upper abdominal pain), nausea, vomiting, taste alterations, heartburn, headache, increased sweating, and dizziness or vertigo. Less common side effects can include diarrhea, itching, skin rash, edema, eczema, and angioedema (swelling beneath the skin). Most of these side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own, but it is advised to consult a doctor if they persist or worsen.

Is ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. This is because there is insufficient safety data or a lack of experience regarding its use in these populations.

Can ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP be taken with other medications?

No adverse interactions have been widely reported with ERDOSTYNE. It can generally be combined with antibiotics, bronchodilators, and cough suppressants. Erdosteine may even enhance the penetration of some antibiotics into respiratory secretions, potentially improving their efficacy. However, it's crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as caution is advised with other mucolytic agents and medications that affect liver function.

What precautions should be taken while taking ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP?

ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP should not be used if you have a known allergy to erdosteine or any of its ingredients. It is contraindicated in patients with severe liver failure, severely decreased kidney function (creatinine clearance <25ml/min), an active stomach or peptic ulcer, or a deficiency of the cystathionine-synthetase enzyme. If you have mild liver impairment, your doctor may adjust the dose, typically not exceeding 300 mg per day. It is also not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age, and particularly in children under two years, as mucolytics can cause bronchial blockage in very young children. Avoid consuming alcohol during therapy.

What happens if a dose of ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

How should ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP be stored?

ERDOSTYNE 300MG CAP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets. The typical storage temperature is below 30°C or between 10°C to 25°C.
