NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE

NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is a potent antibiotic medication manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd., designed to combat a wide range of bacterial infections.

  • Composition: Each capsule contains a combination of two semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotics: Amoxicillin (250 mg) and Cloxacillin (250 mg). In some formulations, Lactobacillus may also be present to help restore gut flora. Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin work by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for bacterial survival, thereby killing and managing the growth of bacteria.

  • Uses: NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is primarily used for managing various bacterial infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. These include:

    • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis).
    • Common throat infections (e.g., tonsillitis).
    • Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, urethritis).
    • Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses, infected wounds).
    • Dental infections (e.g., periodontitis, dental abscesses).
    • Bone and joint infections (e.g., osteomyelitis).
    • Abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis).
    • Genital tract infections (e.g., gonorrhoea). It is important to note that it is not effective against viral infections like the common cold.
  • Dosage and Administration: This medicine should be taken orally, with or without food, as directed by a physician. If it causes an upset stomach, it can be taken with food. Capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed. It is crucial to take the medicine at evenly spaced times, ideally at the same time every day, and to complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance. Dosage and duration depend on the patient's age, body weight, and the severity and location of the infection. For instance, for sinusitis, a typical frequency might be 4 times daily for 2 weeks.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

    • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting.
    • Indigestion, abdominal pain/stomach discomfort.
    • Headaches.
    • Skin rashes and itching. Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions (skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, difficulty breathing), jaundice, persistent vomiting, or bloody diarrhoea. If any severe or worsening symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.
  • Precautions:

    • Allergies: Contraindicated in patients with known allergies to penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
    • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment, as dose adjustments may be necessary. Inform your doctor about any history of fungal or viral infections, epilepsy, mononucleosis, or severe renal impairment.
    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Caution is advised for pregnant and breastfeeding individuals; consult a doctor before use.
    • Alcohol: It is best to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication as it may increase the risk of side effects like nausea and vomiting.
    • Drug Interactions: May interact with antigout medications (e.g., probenecid, allopurinol), which can increase amoxicillin levels. Other antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol) may interfere with its effectiveness. Oral contraceptives might also interact.
    • Driving: Dizziness and fits are possible side effects that could affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
  • Storage: Store the medicine in a cool, dry place, typically below 30°C or at room temperature, away from heat and out of the reach of children. Do not store it in a refrigerator.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE used for?

NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is an antibiotic combination primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. These include infections of the respiratory tract (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis), urinary tract (like cystitis, urethritis), skin and soft tissues (cellulitis, abscesses, infected wounds), dental infections (periodontitis, dental abscesses), bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis), abdominal infections (peritonitis), and certain genital tract infections like gonorrhoea. It is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

2. How does NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE work?

This medicine contains two active ingredients: Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin, both belonging to the penicillin class of antibiotics. They work by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is vital for the bacteria's survival. Amoxicillin prevents key enzymes (penicillin-binding proteins or PBPs) from building the cell wall, causing the bacteria to rupture. Cloxacillin acts similarly but is also resistant to certain bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases, which helps it effectively fight bacteria that might be resistant to other penicillins.

3. What is the usual dosage for NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE?

The dosage of NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is determined by your doctor based on your age, the type and severity of the infection, and your medical history. It should be taken orally, swallowed whole with a glass of water, and not crushed or chewed. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. It's important to take the medicine at evenly spaced times, ideally at the same time each day, and to complete the full prescribed course, even if your symptoms improve earlier, to prevent the infection from returning and to avoid antibiotic resistance.

4. What are the possible side effects of NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE?

Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain, headaches, skin rashes, and itching. If you experience serious side effects like severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, tongue, difficulty breathing), severe skin reactions, liver problems (e.g., jaundice), blood disorders, or seizures, seek immediate medical attention.

5. Is NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is generally considered safe for use if medically prescribed. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects, but human studies are limited. If you are breastfeeding, both Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin pass into breast milk in small amounts. While generally considered probably safe, it should be used with caution and only if recommended by your doctor. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

6. Can NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE be taken with other medications?

NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE can interact with certain medications. For example, antigout medications like probenecid and allopurinol can increase the levels of amoxicillin in your blood, potentially leading to increased side effects such as skin rashes. Some other antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol) may interfere with its effectiveness. It can also reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

7. What precautions should be taken while using NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE?

You should not take NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE if you have a known allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Exercise caution if you have kidney or liver impairment, as dose adjustments may be necessary, and monitoring of organ function is advised. Avoid this medicine if you have mononucleosis, as it can increase the risk of skin rashes. Although some sources suggest moderate alcohol consumption is safe, it's generally advisable to avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of certain side effects like nausea and vomiting or due to unknown interactions. This medication may cause dizziness or fits, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.

8. What happens if a dose of NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

9. How should NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE be stored?

NODIMOX PLUS 500 MG CAPSULE should be stored at room temperature, generally below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it in a dry place, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.
