GATIQUIN DROPS 5 ML

Name:

  • Brand Name: GATIQUIN Eye Drops
  • Common Name: Gatifloxacin Ophthalmic Solution

Composition: Each ml contains:

  • Active Ingredient: Gatifloxacin 0.3% w/v
  • Preservative: Benzalkonium chloride IP 0.005% w/v

Uses: GATIQUIN Eye Drops are indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of various aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the outer white membrane of the eyeball, the conjunctiva, characterized by symptoms like pink/red-toned eyes, a gritty feeling, itchiness, watery eyes, and thick discharge.

Dosage and Administration: For topical ophthalmic use only. The recommended dosage regimen is:

  • Days 1 and 2: Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) every two hours while awake, up to eight times daily.
  • Days 3 through 7: Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) up to four times daily while awake. Patients should wash hands thoroughly before use and avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers, or any other source. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface.

Side Effects: Commonly reported side effects include conjunctival irritation, increased lacrimation (watery eyes), keratitis, papillary conjunctivitis, burning or stinging sensation, eye redness, blurred vision, and eye discomfort. Serious but rare hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions, including angioedema, dyspnea, urticaria, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, have been reported.

Precautions:

  • GATIQUIN Eye Drops are for topical ophthalmic use only and should not be injected.
  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the medication should not use it.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses if you have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis. If worn, contact lenses should be removed prior to application and may be reinserted 15 minutes following administration.
  • Prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
  • Temporary blurred vision may occur after instilling the drops; avoid driving or operating machinery until vision is clear.
  • Caution is advised for pregnant and breastfeeding women; consult a physician.

Storage: Store GATIQUIN Eye Drops below 30°C in a dark place, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about GATIQUIN DROPS 5 ML (Gatifloxacin 0.3% w/v) by CIPLA HEALTH LTD:

What is GATIQUIN DROPS used for?

GATIQUIN DROPS 5 ML is an antibiotic eye drop primarily used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye). It is effective against a broad spectrum of aerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria that can cause these infections.

How does GATIQUIN DROPS work?

GATIQUIN DROPS contains Gatifloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting essential bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. By blocking their action, Gatifloxacin prevents the bacteria from multiplying and repairing themselves, ultimately killing the bacteria and treating the infection.

What is the usual dosage of GATIQUIN DROPS?

The recommended dosage regimen for GATIQUIN Eye Drops is typically:

  • Days 1 and 2: Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) every two hours while awake, up to eight times daily.
  • Days 3 through 7: Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) up to four times daily while awake. It is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions on dosage and duration, and to complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cured and to prevent recurrence.

What are the possible side effects of GATIQUIN DROPS?

Common side effects of GATIQUIN DROPS may include conjunctival irritation, increased tear production (lacrimation), keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), papillary conjunctivitis, redness, burning or stinging sensation in the eye, blurred vision, eye pain, dry eye, eye discharge, and headache. In some cases, a taste disturbance has also been reported. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor immediately.

Is GATIQUIN DROPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: There is limited information on the effects of GATIQUIN DROPS in human pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby when gatifloxacin was administered orally at high doses. Therefore, GATIQUIN DROPS should generally not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as determined by a physician.

Breastfeeding: Limited human data suggest that GATIQUIN DROPS is probably safe to use during breastfeeding, as the drug does not appear to represent any significant risk to the baby. However, there is no information on the presence of gatifloxacin in human milk or its effects on breastfed infants after topical ocular administration. It's advisable to inform your doctor if you are a nursing mother.

Can GATIQUIN DROPS be taken with other medications?

Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topical gatifloxacin ophthalmic solution. If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution of the medications. Systemic administration of some quinolones can interact with drugs like theophylline, caffeine, warfarin, and cyclosporine, but the systemic levels of gatifloxacin from eye drops are typically very low. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, including eye drops, vitamins, and herbal supplements, you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken?

  • For topical ophthalmic use only: GATIQUIN DROPS should not be injected or introduced directly into the anterior chamber of the eye.
  • Avoid contamination: Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, eyelid, or fingers, to prevent contamination and the spread of infection.
  • Contact lenses: Do not wear contact lenses if you have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis or while using GATIQUIN DROPS. Contact lenses should be removed before each application and can be inserted after at least 15 minutes, if deemed safe by your doctor.
  • Allergic reactions: Discontinue use immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction. Serious hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with systemic quinolones.
  • Blurred vision: GATIQUIN DROPS may cause temporary blurring of vision after instillation. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear.
  • Prolonged use: Prolonged use of GATIQUIN DROPS may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue use and seek alternative therapy.

What happens if a dose of GATIQUIN DROPS is missed?

If you miss a dose, instill it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should GATIQUIN DROPS be stored?

Store GATIQUIN DROPS below 30°C (or between 15°-25°C for some formulations), in a dark place, and protect it from freezing. Keep the lid of the container closed when not in use and keep it out of the reach and sight of children and pets. Once opened, use the bottle within four weeks.
