GLUCORYL M1 FORTE
Name: Glucoryl M1 Forte (Brand name) Manufacturer: Alkem Laboratories Ltd.
Composition: Each uncoated bilayered tablet contains:
- Glimepiride IP: 1 mg
- Metformin Hydrochloride IP: 1000 mg (in sustained release form)
Uses: Glucoryl M1 Forte is primarily used for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It is prescribed when diet, exercise, and single-agent medications do not adequately control blood sugar levels. This medication helps lower high blood glucose, improves insulin sensitivity, and aids in preventing or delaying diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, and nerve problems.
Dosage and Administration:
- The typical dosage is one tablet once daily, as directed by a doctor.
- It should be taken with food at the same time each day to maximize benefits and minimize stomach upset.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush, break, or chew it.
- Dosage may be adjusted by the doctor based on individual blood sugar levels and response to the medicine. Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly without consulting a doctor.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, taste changes, and upper respiratory tract infection.
- Serious Side Effects (Rare): Lactic acidosis (symptoms include muscle pain, difficulty breathing, persistent nausea, and fatigue), severe allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, hives), inflammation of the liver (jaundice), and severe low blood sugar levels. Long-term use may also lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency.
Precautions:
- Contraindications: Not recommended for patients with Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver disease, severe heart disease, or known allergies to glimepiride, metformin, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis.
- Other Warnings: Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate liver or kidney problems. The medicine may cause dizziness or confusion due to low blood sugar, affecting the ability to drive or operate machinery. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, kidney function, and liver function is advised during treatment. The skin may become more sensitive to the sun.
Storage: Store in a cool and dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is GLUCORYL M1 FORTE used for?
GLUCORYL M1 FORTE is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps to control high blood sugar levels when diet, exercise, or a single diabetes medication alone are not sufficient. This medication also aids in preventing or delaying diabetes-related complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems.
How does GLUCORYL M1 FORTE work?
GLUCORYL M1 FORTE contains two active ingredients: Glimepiride and Metformin. Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to produce and release more insulin, which helps lower blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, works in several ways: it reduces the production of glucose by the liver, delays the absorption of sugar from the intestines, and increases the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing cells to utilize glucose more effectively from the blood.
What is the usual dosage for GLUCORYL M1 FORTE?
GLUCORYL M1 FORTE typically contains 1mg of Glimepiride and 1000mg of Metformin in a prolonged-release (PR) form. It is usually prescribed to be taken once a day with food to minimize stomach upset. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed or chewed. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage based on your individual blood sugar levels and may adjust it as needed.
What are the possible side effects of GLUCORYL M1 FORTE?
Common side effects can include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and a metallic taste. A significant and common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can cause symptoms like sweating, dizziness, palpitations, shivering, intense thirst, confusion, and anxiety. Serious but rare side effects include lactic acidosis (accumulation of lactic acid in the body), which requires immediate medical attention, and potential vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use.
Is GLUCORYL M1 FORTE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
GLUCORYL M1 FORTE is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should consult their doctor. Similarly, it is considered unsafe or contraindicated during breastfeeding because the medication may pass into breast milk and cause adverse effects in the baby.
Can GLUCORYL M1 FORTE be taken with other medications?
GLUCORYL M1 FORTE can interact with various medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. Interactions can occur with:
- Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone, dexamethasone), which might raise blood sugar levels.
- Thiazide diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide), which can also increase blood sugar.
- Certain antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, rifampicin, trimethoprim) may alter medication effects.
- Other antidiabetic medicines including insulin, as this can increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin).
- Antifungals (e.g., fluconazole, miconazole).
What precautions should be taken with GLUCORYL M1 FORTE?
- Alcohol Consumption: Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and severe low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
- Hypoglycemia Awareness: Be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar and always carry a fast-acting source of glucose (like candies, glucose biscuits, or fruit juice) to treat it immediately.
- Kidney and Liver Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as the dosage may need adjustment or the medicine may not be suitable. It is not recommended for those with severe kidney or liver impairment.
- Driving and Operating Machinery: This medication may cause dizziness or confusion due to changes in blood sugar, so drive only if you are alert.
- Regular Monitoring: Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, kidney function, and possibly vitamin B12 levels is recommended during treatment.
What happens if a dose of GLUCORYL M1 FORTE is missed?
If you miss a dose of GLUCORYL M1 FORTE, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should GLUCORYL M1 FORTE be stored?
Store GLUCORYL M1 FORTE in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medicine out of reach and sight of children. The recommended storage temperature is typically below 30°C (86°F).
