MIRTAZ 30MG TAB

MIRTAZ 30MG TAB is an antidepressant manufactured by SUN PHARMA LABORATORIES LTD..

  • Name:

    • Common Name: Mirtazapine
    • Brand Name: Mirtaz 30mg Tablet
  • Composition: Each film-coated tablet contains 30 mg of Mirtazapine.

  • Uses: Mirtaz 30mg Tablet is primarily used in adults for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). It is also sometimes used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. Mirtazapine works by increasing the levels of certain chemical messengers in the brain, such as serotonin and noradrenaline, which help to regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep and appetite.

  • Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for Mirtazapine is 15 mg or 30 mg once daily, preferably in the evening before bedtime due to its sedative effects. The effective daily dose typically ranges between 15 mg and 45 mg. Dose adjustments should not be made in intervals of less than 1 to 2 weeks to allow for sufficient time to assess the therapeutic response. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not stop taking Mirtaz suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms.

  • Side Effects:

    • Common Side Effects: Drowsiness/sleepiness, increased appetite and weight gain, dry mouth, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue.
    • Serious Side Effects: These are rare but can include severe stomach or back pain (signs of pancreatitis), constant headaches with confusion or weakness (low sodium levels), yellowing of skin/eyes (liver problems), high temperature, sore throat, and mouth ulcers (blood cell problems), or severe allergic reactions. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors have also been reported, especially at the beginning of treatment.
  • Precautions:

    • Avoid consuming alcohol as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
    • Caution is advised in patients with epilepsy, liver or kidney impairment, low blood pressure, glaucoma, or diabetes.
    • Mirtaz 30mg Tablet should not be taken concomitantly with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or other serotonergic drugs due to the risk of Serotonin Syndrome.
    • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you due to potential drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Storage: Store Mirtaz 30mg Tablet below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet

MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet, containing the active ingredient Mirtazapine, is an antidepressant medication manufactured by SUN PHARMA LABORATORIES LTD. It is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder.

What is MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet used for?

MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet is primarily prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. It may also be used in some cases to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders.

How does MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet work?

Mirtazapine is classified as a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA). It works by increasing the levels of certain chemical messengers in the brain, namely serotonin and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), which play a crucial role in regulating mood and emotions. This action is achieved by blocking specific receptors in the brain, leading to enhanced neurotransmission.

What is the usual dosage for MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet?

For adults, the typical starting dose of Mirtazapine is 15mg or 30mg once daily, usually taken in the evening before bedtime. The effective daily dose generally ranges from 15mg to 45mg. Your doctor may adjust the dose gradually, typically at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks, to find the most effective and well-tolerated dosage.

What are the possible side effects of MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet?

Common side effects may include headache, weight gain, sleepiness or drowsiness, dry mouth, increased appetite, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. More serious but less common side effects can include a low white blood cell count (agranulocytosis), serotonin syndrome, and an increased risk of suicidal thoughts, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults. If you experience severe side effects such as a high fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or sudden severe abdominal pain, contact your doctor immediately. This medication can cause dizziness and sleepiness, so avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery until you understand how it affects you.

Is MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: It is recommended to consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Mirtazapine may be considered unsafe during pregnancy unless clearly needed. While some studies suggest no increased risk of major birth defects, others indicate a possible link to preterm delivery or low birth weight, and temporary withdrawal symptoms in the newborn if taken close to delivery. Your doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

During Breastfeeding: Mirtazapine passes into breast milk in small amounts. While some sources suggest it is probably unsafe, others indicate it has been used during breastfeeding without significant problems, particularly for infants older than 2 months. It is crucial to consult your doctor, who will help you decide the best course of action and monitor the breastfed infant for any behavioral side effects or issues with growth.

Can MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet be taken with other medications?

Mirtazapine can interact with several medications. It is contraindicated with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and should not be used concurrently or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Concomitant use with alcohol, benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam), or other sedatives can increase drowsiness and sedation, so alcohol should be avoided. The risk of serotonin syndrome is also increased when taken with other serotonergic drugs like triptans, lithium, tramadol, or St. John's Wort.

If you are taking warfarin, your doctor may need to adjust its dosage as Mirtazapine can affect its action, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Certain epilepsy medications (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin) and the antibiotic rifampicin can reduce the effects of Mirtazapine, potentially requiring a higher dose. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking.

What precautions should be taken when taking MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet?

Do not stop taking MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, dizziness, nausea, headaches, or shaking. Any discontinuation or dosage reduction should be done gradually under your doctor's supervision. Due to potential drowsiness and dizziness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. It's important to monitor for any new or worsening suicidal thoughts or changes in mood or behavior, especially at the beginning of treatment or when the dose is changed, particularly in young adults. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, as a dose adjustment may be necessary.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you take MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet once a day and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you take it twice a day and forget your morning dose, take it with your evening dose. If you miss your evening dose, skip it and continue with your usual morning and evening doses the next day. If you miss both doses, skip them and resume your regular schedule the next day.

How should MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet be stored?

MIRTAZ 30MG Tablet should be stored at controlled room temperature, typically below 30°C (between 15°C and 30°C or 68°F to 77°F). It should be protected from light and moisture and kept out of reach and sight of children.
