Frequently asked questions
CEFKURA 250MG TAB contains the active ingredient Cefuroxime (or Cefuroxime axetil), which is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Here are some frequently asked questions about CEFKURA 250MG TAB:
What is CEFKURA 250MG TAB used for?
CEFKURA 250MG TAB is an antibiotic primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. These include infections of the respiratory tract (like bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis), ear (otitis media), urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. It is also used to treat Lyme disease. This medicine is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
How does CEFKURA 250MG TAB work?
CEFKURA 250MG TAB works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls. Cefuroxime, its active component, binds to specific proteins within the bacteria, which inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a vital part of the cell wall. This disruption causes the bacterial cell walls to rupture, leading to the death of the bacteria.
What is the usual dosage for CEFKURA 250MG TAB?
For adults and teenagers, the typical oral dosage is 250 mg to 500 mg twice daily (every 12 hours) for 5 to 10 days, or sometimes up to 10-14 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection. For certain conditions like uncomplicated urinary tract infections, it might be 250 mg every 12 hours for 7 to 10 days. For children aged 3 months to 12 years who can swallow tablets whole, the dosage is often 250 mg twice daily for 10 days, or it may be weight-based. It is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration.
What are the possible side effects of CEFKURA 250MG TAB?
Common side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain/cramping, headache, and vaginal infections. Less common but potentially serious side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, trouble breathing), severe or persistent diarrhea (which could indicate Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea), signs of liver problems (yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine), or kidney problems (change in urine amount). If any serious side effects occur, contact your doctor immediately.
Is CEFKURA 250MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Cefuroxime is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when clearly needed, and it is classified as a Pregnancy Category B medication. Animal studies have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are limited. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Breastfeeding: Cefuroxime passes into breast milk in small amounts. While generally considered acceptable in nursing mothers, it may cause side effects in breastfed infants such as diarrhea or thrush. Your doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the risks and may recommend monitoring the infant for adverse effects or suggest alternative medications.
Can CEFKURA 250MG TAB be taken with other medications?
Yes, but caution is advised with certain medications.
- Antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): Medications that reduce stomach acidity can decrease the absorption of cefuroxime. It's recommended to take cefuroxime at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking antacids. PPIs should generally be avoided during treatment with cefuroxime.
- Probenecid: Taking probenecid (used for gout) with cefuroxime can increase the amount of cefuroxime in your body, raising the risk of side effects.
- Oral Contraceptives: Concomitant use with CEFKURA 250MG TAB may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills, so an alternative method of contraception (like condoms) may be needed.
- Warfarin: Cefuroxime should be used with caution if you are taking blood thinners like Warfarin.
- Live Bacterial Vaccines: Cefuroxime may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, such as the typhoid vaccine.
Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using CEFKURA 250MG TAB?
- Allergies: Do not take CEFKURA 250MG TAB if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or penicillin, as there's a risk of a serious allergic reaction.
- Kidney or Liver Problems: If you have kidney or liver disease, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage, as cefuroxime is removed from the body by the kidneys.
- Diarrhea: Antibiotic use, including cefuroxime, can cause diarrhea due to an overgrowth of bacteria like Clostridioides difficile. If you experience severe, persistent diarrhea, especially with blood or mucus, contact your doctor immediately and do not use anti-diarrhea medications without consulting your doctor.
- Alcohol: Consuming alcohol with CEFKURA 250MG TAB is generally considered safe and does not cause harmful side effects, but it's always best to consult your doctor.
- Driving/Operating Machinery: This medicine may cause dizziness, so be cautious when driving or operating machinery.
- Completion of Course: Always complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning and to avoid antibiotic resistance.
What happens if a dose of CEFKURA 250MG TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this could lead to increased side effects.
How should CEFKURA 250MG TAB be stored?
CEFKURA 250MG TAB tablets should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep all medications out of reach of children. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
