Description
TIOVA Inhaler by CIPLA HEALTH LTD
Name
- Brand Name: TIOVA Inhaler
- Common Name: Tiotropium Bromide Inhaler
Composition
TIOVA Inhaler contains Tiotropium Bromide Monohydrate, equivalent to Tiotropium 9 mcg, as its active ingredient per actuation. It is suspended in propellant HFA227. Tiotropium is a long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator.
Uses
TIOVA Inhaler is primarily prescribed for the long-term, once-daily maintenance treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including conditions like chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is also used in the management of asthma. This medicine works by relaxing and widening the airways, making it easier to breathe and helping to reduce the likelihood of COPD flare-ups and worsening symptoms. It is not intended for the relief of acute symptoms or sudden breathing problems.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended dosage for TIOVA Inhaler is two puffs once daily. It should be used at the same time each day for optimal results. The inhaler may be used with a Zerostat/Zerostat VT Spacer device if patients find it difficult to synchronize aerosol actuation with inspiration. It is for inhalation only and should not be swallowed. Before the first use, or if it hasn't been used for more than 4 weeks, the inhaler should be primed by releasing two sprays into the air. It is advisable to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out after each inhalation to help prevent oral infections.

- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to tiotropium, ipratropium, or any other components of the product.
- Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, or bladder-neck obstruction, as it may worsen these conditions and increase the risk of urinary retention.
- Patients with moderate-to-severe renal impairment should be closely monitored for anticholinergic side effects.
- Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Avoid contact with eyes, as it may cause blurred vision and pupil dilation.
- Exercise caution when driving or operating heavy machinery if experiencing dizziness or blurred vision.

Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about TIOVA Inhaler by CIPLA HEALTH LTD:
What is TIOVA Inhaler used for?
TIOVA Inhaler is a prescription medicine primarily used for the long-term, daily maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It helps control symptoms like chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing by relaxing and opening the airways. It is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used for sudden breathing problems or acute asthma attacks.
How does TIOVA Inhaler work?
TIOVA Inhaler contains the active ingredient tiotropium bromide, which is a long-acting antimuscarinic agent, also known as an anticholinergic. It works by blocking specific nerve signals in the body that cause the airways to narrow. By doing so, it relaxes the muscles around the airways, causing them to widen and making it easier to breathe for up to 24 hours.
What is the usual dosage of TIOVA Inhaler?
The recommended dosage for TIOVA Inhaler is two puffs once daily. It should be used at the same time each day, and the prescribed dose should not be exceeded.
What are the possible side effects of TIOVA Inhaler?
Common side effects include dry mouth, cough, sore throat, sinusitis, headache, constipation, and dizziness. More serious, though less frequent, side effects can include blurred vision, new onset or worsening of glaucoma, urinary retention (difficulty passing urine), increased heart rate, and allergic reactions such as hives, rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing. If you experience severe side effects or an allergic reaction, stop using the inhaler and seek immediate medical attention.
Is TIOVA Inhaler safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
TIOVA Inhaler is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, as animal studies have shown potential harm to the developing baby, and there is limited human data. Similarly, it is probably unsafe to use while breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the infant. Always consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can TIOVA Inhaler be taken with other medications?
TIOVA Inhaler can generally be used alongside short-acting and long-acting beta-agonists (bronchodilators), methylxanthines, and oral or inhaled steroids without an increase in adverse reactions. However, it should not be co-administered with other anticholinergic medications, such as ipratropium, as this may lead to an increase in anticholinergic side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using TIOVA Inhaler?
TIOVA Inhaler is for maintenance treatment and should not be used for acute symptoms or sudden breathing problems. Use it cautiously if you have conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, problems passing urine, or a bladder-neck obstruction, as it may worsen these conditions. Patients with moderate-to-severe kidney problems should be monitored closely for anticholinergic side effects. Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes. If paradoxical bronchospasm (sudden worsening of breathing) occurs after use, stop the medication and seek immediate medical help.
What happens if a dose of TIOVA Inhaler is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should TIOVA Inhaler be stored?
TIOVA Inhaler should be stored below 25°C (77°F) or below 30°C in a dry place. Do not freeze the canister. The canister is pressurized and must be kept away from direct sunlight, heat, and should not be incinerated, punctured, or broken, even when empty. Keep TIOVA Inhaler and all medicines out of the reach of children.
