Description

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY 0.7 ML by CIPLA LTD.

Name

  • Brand Name: Zolmist Nasal Spray
  • Common Name: Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray

Composition Zolmist Nasal Spray contains Zolmitriptan as its active ingredient, typically in a strength of 5 mg per spray.

Uses Zolmist Nasal Spray is prescribed for the acute treatment of migraine headaches in adults, with or without aura. It helps relieve symptoms such as headache pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound by constricting blood vessels around the brain and blocking pain signals. It is not intended for preventing migraine headaches or treating cluster headaches.

Dosage and Administration The typical dosage is one spray (5 mg of zolmitriptan) administered into one nostril as soon as migraine headache pain begins. If symptoms improve but return after two hours, an additional dose may be used. Do not exceed a maximum of 3 doses in any 24-hour period. It is crucial not to prime the nasal spray as it contains only one dose. Gently blow your nose before use.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Irritated or sore nose, unusual taste in the mouth, dry mouth, tiredness, dizziness, sensitive skin (especially around the nose), burning or tingling sensation, nausea, sleepiness, muscle weakness, and a warm sensation.
  • Serious Side Effects: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing), chest pain, tightness, pressure in the chest/jaw/neck, symptoms of heart attack or stroke (e.g., weakness or numbness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision problems), sudden severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, or symptoms of serotonin syndrome (agitation, confusion, fever, sweating, shivering, twitching).

Precautions Zolmist Nasal Spray should be used with caution and under medical supervision, especially in patients with a history of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver or kidney disease, or stroke. It is not recommended for individuals with certain heart conditions like Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. Avoid using other triptans or ergot-containing medications within 24 hours of using Zolmist Nasal Spray. It may cause drowsiness; therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age or adults over 65.

Storage Store Zolmist Nasal Spray in its closed container at room temperature, ideally below 25°C or between 10°C and 25°C, away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not freeze.

Frequently asked questions

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY 0.7 ML is a medication primarily used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches.

What is ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY used for?

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY is used to manage acute migraine headaches in adults, with or without aura. It helps relieve symptoms such as headache, nausea, and vomiting associated with a migraine attack. It is not intended for preventing migraines or treating cluster headaches.

How does ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY work?

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY contains Zolmitriptan, which belongs to a class of medicines called triptans or selective serotonin receptor agonists. It works by constricting blood vessels around the brain, preventing pain signals from reaching the brain, and inhibiting the release of certain natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and other migraine symptoms.

What is the usual dosage?

For adults and children 12 years and older, the typical initial dose is 2.5 milligrams (one spray) into one nostril. If the migraine symptoms persist or return, another dose (2.5 mg or 5 mg) may be administered after at least 2 hours from the first spray. The maximum single dose is 5 mg, and no more than 10 mg should be used within a 24-hour period (not exceeding 3 doses). It is important to follow your doctor's prescribed dosage and avoid exceeding it.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY include an irritated nose, unusual taste in the mouth, tiredness, dizziness, sensitive skin (especially around the nose), and a burning or tingling feeling. More serious side effects, though rare, can include pain, tightness, pressure, or heaviness in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw, allergic reactions, changes in heartbeat, vision problems, or sudden severe stomach pain. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary and prescribed by a doctor after weighing the benefits and potential risks. For breastfeeding mothers, preliminary evidence suggests that zolmitriptan levels in breast milk are low, and amounts ingested by the infant are small. However, it should be used with caution, and a doctor should be consulted.

Can it be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and other migraine medications. ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY should not be taken with other triptan medications (e.g., sumatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan) or ergot alkaloids (e.g., dihydroergotamine, ergotamine) within 24 hours due to an increased risk of serious side effects. Concurrent use with MAO-A inhibitors is contraindicated. Taking it with certain antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs) can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not use ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY if you are allergic to any of its contents. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, heart disease (including ischemic heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of heart attack/stroke), diabetes, high cholesterol, or if you smoke. This medicine may cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness. Do not use the spray more than directed, and avoid blowing your nose immediately after use to ensure proper absorption.

What happens if a dose is missed?

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY is not a medication for regular use, as it is used for acute migraine attacks. Therefore, the concept of a "missed dose" does not typically apply. Use it as soon as a migraine headache begins, as directed by your doctor.

How should it be stored?

ZOLMIST NASAL SPRAY should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight, at temperatures below 25°C or below 30°C. Keep it out of reach and sight of children. Do not keep outdated medicine.
