Frequently asked questions

What is SWITDAPA 10MG TAB used for?

SWITDAPA 10MG TAB, containing dapagliflozin 10mg, is primarily used to treat adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood sugar control, along with diet and exercise. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with Type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adult patients with heart failure. For adults with chronic kidney disease, it is used to reduce the risk of further worsening of kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure. SWITDAPA is not for people with Type 1 diabetes.

How does SWITDAPA 10MG TAB work?

SWITDAPA 10MG TAB belongs to a class of medicines called SGLT2 inhibitors. It works by blocking a protein in your kidneys called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), which is responsible for reabsorbing most of the glucose from your urine back into your blood. By inhibiting SGLT2, dapagliflozin causes excess glucose to be removed from the body through urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. It also influences other physiological functions that benefit the heart and kidneys.

What is the usual dosage for SWITDAPA 10MG TAB?

For Type 2 diabetes, the usual starting dose for adults and children aged 10 years and older is 5mg once daily, which may be increased to 10mg once daily for better blood sugar control if needed. For heart failure and chronic kidney disease, the recommended dose for adults is 10mg once daily. The tablet should be taken by mouth once a day, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

What are the possible side effects of SWITDAPA 10MG TAB?

Common side effects may include vaginal yeast infections, yeast infections of the penis, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, changes in urination (such as an urgent need to urinate more often or at night), back pain, dizziness, and mild skin rash.

Serious side effects can occur, including dehydration (causing dizziness, faintness, or weakness), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA - characterized by increased thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, fruity-smelling breath, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting), and serious urinary tract infections (symptoms include burning during urination, frequent or urgent urination, lower back pain, fever, or blood in the urine). Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is also possible, especially when SWITDAPA is taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas. A rare but serious bacterial infection in the genital area called Fournier's gangrene has also been reported.

Is SWITDAPA 10MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: SWITDAPA 10MG TAB is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. There is insufficient data on its use in pregnant women, and animal studies have shown potential adverse effects on kidney development. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, it should be discontinued, and you should contact your healthcare provider.

Breastfeeding: It is usually not recommended to take SWITDAPA 10MG TAB while breastfeeding. It is not known how much of the medicine passes into breast milk, but there is a theoretical risk of harm to the infant's developing kidneys. Your doctor may suggest an alternative medication, particularly if you are nursing a newborn or premature baby.

Can SWITDAPA 10MG TAB be taken with other medications?

SWITDAPA 10MG TAB can be taken with other medications for Type 2 diabetes, such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. However, if taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, your doctor may need to adjust the doses of those medications to reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Caution is advised with diuretics (water pills) as this combination can increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure. It's also recommended to consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can sometimes lower blood sugar levels. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about all medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking, as dapagliflozin has many potential drug interactions.

What precautions should be taken while on SWITDAPA 10MG TAB?

Before starting SWITDAPA 10MG TAB, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of urinary tract infections, or issues with urination. It is important to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially during exercise or in hot weather, to help prevent dehydration. You should monitor for symptoms of serious side effects like dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and urinary tract infections, and contact your doctor immediately if you experience them. Your doctor may temporarily advise you to stop taking SWITDAPA before planned surgery. Regular blood and urine tests may be needed to monitor your condition and check for unwanted effects.

What happens if a dose of SWITDAPA 10MG TAB is missed?

If you miss a dose of SWITDAPA 10MG TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (e.g., less than 12 hours away), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

How should SWITDAPA 10MG TAB be stored?

SWITDAPA 10MG TAB should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), and below 30°C. Keep the medicine in its original container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and out of the reach of children.
