Description

SUPIROCIN F Ointment

SUPIROCIN F Ointment, manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is a topical medication designed to treat various skin infections.

Composition

SUPIROCIN F Ointment contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Fluticasone Propionate (0.005% w/w): A corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, itching, redness, dryness, and scaling associated with skin conditions.
  • Mupirocin (2% w/w): An antibiotic that works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, effectively killing bacteria responsible for skin infections, including Gram-negative organisms like Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenza.

Uses

This ointment is primarily used to treat various skin infections, especially those caused by bacteria, and inflammatory skin conditions where secondary bacterial infections are present or likely to occur. Conditions it helps manage include:

  • Impetigo (bacterial skin infection with red sores).
  • Eczema.
  • Psoriasis.
  • General skin rashes.
  • Inflammatory skin conditions presenting with redness, swelling, and itching.

Dosage and Administration

SUPIROCIN F Ointment is for external use only.

  • Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before application.
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected skin area 2 to 3 times daily, or as advised by your doctor.
  • Gently massage it into the skin.
  • Wash hands before and after application, unless the treatment is for the hands.
  • Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings like bandages unless specifically directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • It is crucial to follow the prescribed duration of treatment, even if symptoms improve.

Side Effects

Common side effects at the application site may include:

  • Burning sensation.
  • Itching.
  • Redness.
  • Stinging.
  • Dryness.

In rare cases, more serious allergic reactions such as rashes, swelling, or shortness of breath may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

Precautions

  • External Use Only: This medicine is strictly for external dermatologic use.
  • Avoid Contact: Prevent contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
  • Not for Burnt Skin/Open Wounds: Do not apply on burnt skin or open wounds.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Prolonged Use: Avoid prolonged use, as it may lead to fungal overgrowth or thinning of the skin.
  • Facial Application: Long-term application on the face is generally not recommended due to increased susceptibility to skin changes.
  • Sun Exposure: Minimize unnecessary sun exposure on treated areas and consider protective clothing or sunscreen.
  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you have known allergies to Fluticasone, Mupirocin, or any other components of the ointment.

Frequently asked questions

What is SUPIROCIN F OINT. used for?

SUPIROCIN F OINT. is used to treat various skin infections and steroid-responsive inflammatory skin disorders where secondary bacterial infections are present, suspected, or likely to occur. It helps to reduce inflammation, itching, redness, dryness, and scaling associated with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rashes, and impetigo.

How does SUPIROCIN F OINT. work?

SUPIROCIN F OINT. works through a combination of two active ingredients: Fluticasone Propionate and Mupirocin. Fluticasone Propionate is a steroid that reduces inflammation by blocking the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause the skin to become red, swollen, and itchy. Mupirocin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by disrupting their cell membrane and stopping the production of essential proteins needed for their survival. It is effective against certain bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Escherichia coli, but not against fungal or viral infections.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

SUPIROCIN F OINT. is for external use only. A thin layer should be applied to the affected skin area 2 to 3 times daily, or as advised by your doctor. Before each application, wash and dry the affected area thoroughly. It is important to wash your hands after applying the ointment, unless the treatment is for your hands. Do not use more than the recommended dose or for a longer duration than prescribed.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of SUPIROCIN F OINT. at the application site include burning, itching, redness, stinging, irritation, and dryness. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rashes, swelling, or shortness of breath can occur. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to skin thinning, weakening of the skin, or overgrowth of fungi. If you experience persistent or worsening side effects, or if there is no improvement within 3-5 days, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It is generally recommended to consult a doctor before using SUPIROCIN F OINT. during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For pregnancy, limited human data exist, and animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. It is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk. If nursing mothers apply the ointment to their breast or nipple, they should wash the affected area thoroughly before nursing their baby.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Interactions between topical mupirocin (one of the active ingredients) and other systemic medications are considered unlikely due to its poor absorption through the skin. However, it is important to inform your doctor about all other topical medications you are using. Avoid mixing SUPIROCIN F OINT. with other topical preparations on the same area, as this can reduce its effectiveness or alter its absorption. Specific drug interactions with fluticasone (the other active ingredient) can include ritonavir (for HIV) and itraconazole (for fungal infection).

What precautions should be taken?

SUPIROCIN F OINT. is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth, and rinse with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not apply it to burnt skin or open wounds. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings or bandages unless specifically instructed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects. The ointment is generally not recommended for use in children under 2 months of age. Prolonged use should be avoided, especially on the face, as it can lead to skin thinning. This medication is not recommended for conditions like rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, or fungal/viral infections.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of SUPIROCIN F OINT., apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should it be stored?

SUPIROCIN F OINT. should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and at a temperature between 10°C and 30°C (or below 30°C). Keep the ointment in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the sight and reach of children.
