Frequently asked questions
Here are frequently asked questions about ORAXIN SYRUP 200 ML:
What is Oraxin Syrup used for?
Oraxin Syrup is primarily used as an appetite stimulant to treat conditions like loss of appetite (anorexia), weight loss, and anorexia nervosa. It also helps in improving nutritional status in undernourished patients, and can be used as an adjunct in anti-tubercular and antiretroviral treatments for weight gain. Additionally, it may aid in managing certain allergic conditions and hepatobiliary disorders associated with appetite loss.
How does Oraxin Syrup work?
Oraxin Syrup is a combination medication containing Cyproheptadine, Tricholine Citrate, and Sorbitol. Cyproheptadine, an antihistamine, works by decreasing the effect of serotonin (a chemical messenger) in the hypothalamus region of the brain, which controls appetite, thereby stimulating hunger. Tricholine Citrate acts as a bile acid-binding agent, which helps reduce cholesterol levels and supports liver function. Sorbitol serves as a syrup base and an osmotic laxative, aiding in relieving constipation.
What is the usual dosage of Oraxin Syrup?
The dosage of Oraxin Syrup varies based on age and should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. For adults, a common recommendation is 10ml three times daily. For children, the typical dosage is 5-7.5ml three times daily for those aged 7-14 years, and 5ml twice daily for children aged 2-6 years. It is often recommended to take the syrup before meals.
What are the possible side effects of Oraxin Syrup?
Common side effects of Oraxin Syrup include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and confusion. Other possible side effects may include rash, disturbed coordination, hypotension, palpitation, tachycardia, urinary retention, and thickening of bronchial secretions. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time.
Is Oraxin Syrup safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Oraxin Syrup is generally not recommended during breastfeeding because it contains cyproheptadine, which may reduce breast milk production. For pregnant individuals, it is advised to consult a doctor before taking Oraxin Syrup, as Tricholine, one of its components, is classified as a pregnancy category risk D medicine, meaning there may be a risk to the fetus.
Can Oraxin Syrup be taken with other medications?
Oraxin Syrup can have additive effects if taken with alcohol, CNS depressants (like hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and anti-anxiety drugs). Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) can prolong and intensify its anticholinergic effects. It may also interact with tricyclic antidepressants and atropine. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using Oraxin Syrup?
Exercise caution if you have conditions such as asthma, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma), heart problems, peptic ulcer, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, pyloroduodenal obstruction, or kidney and liver diseases. Oraxin Syrup can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can worsen drowsiness. Diabetic patients should also use this syrup with caution.
What happens if a dose of Oraxin Syrup is missed?
If you miss a dose of Oraxin Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Oraxin Syrup be stored?
Oraxin Syrup should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably below 30°C (or 25°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. It is important to keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the syrup. Ensure the bottle is tightly sealed after each use.
