Description
JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET
-
Name:
- Brand Name: Jardiance 10 mg Tablet
- Common Name: Empagliflozin 10 mg
-
Composition:
- Active Ingredient: Empagliflozin 10 mg
- Inactive Ingredients: Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate. The film coating contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide, talc, polyethylene glycol, and yellow ferric oxide.
-
Uses: Jardiance is a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used in adults and children aged 10 years and older. It is prescribed for:
- Improving glycemic control in adults and children (10 years and older) with type 2 diabetes mellitus, as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure.
- Reducing the risk of sustained decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression.
-
Dosage and Administration: The recommended dose of Jardiance 10 mg is one tablet orally once daily in the morning, with or without food. For additional glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily if tolerated. It is generally recommended to assess renal function and correct volume depletion prior to initiation. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, but do not double the next dose.
-
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), genital fungal infections (e.g., vaginal yeast infection, balanitis), increased urination (polyuria), upper respiratory tract infections, increased cholesterol, joint pain, and nausea.
- Serious Side Effects: Dehydration (volume depletion), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), severe urinary tract infections (e.g., urosepsis, pyelonephritis), low blood glucose (hypoglycemia, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas), necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene), and serious allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat).
-
Precautions:
- Jardiance is not recommended for type 1 diabetes or for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney problems; it should not be initiated if eGFR is below 45 mL/min/1.73 m², and is not recommended for use to improve glycemic control in patients with eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m².
- Concomitant use with diuretics, insulin, or insulin secretagogues may increase the risk of dehydration and hypoglycemia, respectively. Dosage adjustments for insulin or sulfonylureas may be necessary.
- Patients should be monitored for signs of dehydration and ketoacidosis.
- Temporarily withhold Jardiance for at least 3 days prior to major surgery or procedures associated with prolonged fasting.
-
Storage: Store at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep Jardiance and all medicines out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET:
What is JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET used for?
JARDIANCE (empagliflozin) 10mg tablets are primarily used to help control blood sugar levels in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus, alongside diet and exercise. It is also approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of further worsening of kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression.
How does JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET work?
JARDIANCE is a medication known as a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the SGLT2 proteins in your kidneys. These proteins are normally responsible for reabsorbing glucose (sugar) back into your bloodstream. By inhibiting SGLT2, JARDIANCE causes your kidneys to remove more glucose from your body through your urine, thereby lowering your blood sugar levels. This mechanism can also lead to a mild diuretic effect, which may help lower blood pressure and contribute to some weight loss.
What is the usual dosage for JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET?
For most conditions, including heart failure and chronic kidney disease, the usual recommended dose of JARDIANCE is 10 mg taken orally once daily in the morning, with or without food. For type 2 diabetes, the starting dose is typically 10 mg once daily, and your doctor may increase it to 25 mg once daily if more blood sugar control is needed and the lower dose is well-tolerated. The maximum recommended dose is 25 mg per day.
What are the possible side effects of JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET?
Common side effects can include urinary tract infections (more frequent in females), genital yeast infections (in both males and females), increased urination, upper respiratory infections, joint pain, nausea, and increased thirst.
Serious side effects, though less common, require immediate medical attention. These include dehydration (symptoms like dizziness or weakness), low blood pressure, kidney damage, diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, trouble breathing, or fruity-smelling breath, which can occur even with normal blood sugar levels), serious urinary tract infections (like pyelonephritis or urosepsis), severe allergic reactions (e.g., hives, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing), and a rare but serious genital infection called Fournier's gangrene (pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in the genital or rectal area with fever). There is also a rare increased risk of lower limb amputations, particularly in individuals with pre-existing risk factors.
Is JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: JARDIANCE is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters, as animal studies have shown potential for kidney damage in developing fetuses. It's crucial to discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as they may recommend alternative treatments that are considered safer during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended to take JARDIANCE while breastfeeding. While it's not known if the medication passes into human breast milk, animal studies indicate it can. If it were to pass into breast milk, there's a potential risk of kidney development issues in the breastfed child. Your doctor can help you weigh the risks and benefits or suggest a different treatment.
Can JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET be taken with other medications?
Yes, JARDIANCE can interact with other medications. Taking it with insulin or insulin secretagogues (like sulfonylureas) can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Combining it with diuretics ("water pills") can increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure. It may also interact with lithium, potentially affecting its levels. Certain herbal supplements, such as chromium and garlic, might also affect blood sugar levels and could interact with JARDIANCE. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while taking JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET?
Before starting JARDIANCE, inform your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, especially if you have type 1 diabetes (JARDIANCE is not for type 1 diabetes), severe kidney disease, a history of urinary tract infections or genital yeast infections, low blood pressure, or liver problems. It's important to stay well-hydrated to prevent dehydration. You should regularly monitor your blood sugar levels and be aware of the symptoms of serious side effects like ketoacidosis, seeking immediate medical attention if they occur. If you have scheduled surgery, your doctor may advise you to temporarily stop taking JARDIANCE for at least 3 days beforehand. You should also practice good foot care, especially if you have risk factors for lower limb amputations.
What happens if a dose of JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET is missed?
If you miss a dose of JARDIANCE, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to compensate for a missed dose, as this could increase the risk of side effects.
How should JARDIANCE 10MG TABLET be stored?
JARDIANCE tablets should be stored at room temperature, specifically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). It is crucial to keep JARDIANCE and all other medicines out of the reach of children.
