  • Name:

    • Brand Name: Foracort 200 Rotacaps
    • Common Name: Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate inhalation capsule
  • Composition:

    • Each capsule contains:
      • Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate IP: 6 mcg
      • Budesonide IP: 200 mcg
  • Uses: Foracort 200 Rotacaps is prescribed for the long-term management and maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma in patients aged 6 years and older. It helps relieve symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness by reducing inflammation in the airways and improving airflow. It is not for acute asthma attacks.

  • Dosage and Administration:

    • Foracort Rotacaps are for inhalation only and should not be swallowed.
    • The capsule should be placed into a Rotahaler/Revolizer device for administration.
    • Adults (18 years and older): The typical maintenance dosage is 1-2 rotacaps twice daily. An additional rotacap may be taken as needed for symptom relief, but generally, not more than 6 rotacaps should be taken on any single occasion. A total daily dose of more than 8 rotacaps is typically not needed, though up to 12 rotacaps can be used for a limited period under medical advice.
    • After each use, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to prevent fungal infections.
    • Dosage is individual and should be adjusted based on disease severity, titrating to the lowest effective dose once control is achieved.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Fungal infection in the mouth (oral candidiasis), headache, sore throat (pharyngolaryngeal pain), hoarse voice, upper respiratory tract infection, cough, back pain, increased heart rate, and trembling.
    • Serious (seek medical attention): Paradoxical bronchospasm (immediate increase in wheezing after dosing), worsening asthma or COPD symptoms, or symptoms of overdose (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain).
  • Precautions:

    • Do not use if allergic to any components.
    • Not for acute relief of bronchospasm.
    • Inform your doctor if you have heart conditions (coronary insufficiency, arrhythmias, high blood pressure), diabetes, hypokalaemia, glaucoma, cataracts, osteoporosis, liver disease, or infections (tuberculosis, chickenpox, measles).
    • Regular monitoring of potassium levels is recommended as it may cause low potassium levels.
    • Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, only if benefits outweigh risks, and under medical advice.
    • Avoid alcohol consumption as it may worsen liver problems.
    • Do not stop treatment abruptly without consulting a doctor.
  • Storage:

    • Store in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight, below 30°C.
    • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
    • Use immediately after taking out of the blister.
Frequently asked questions

FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS is a combination medication containing Budesonide (a corticosteroid) and Formoterol (a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist). It is manufactured by Cipla Ltd. and is used for the management of certain respiratory conditions.

What is FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS used for?

FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS is primarily used for the long-term management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in patients aged 6 years and older. It helps to relieve symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing by reducing inflammation and opening up the airways. It is not intended for the relief of sudden or acute breathing problems.

How does FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS work?

FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS works through the combined action of its two active ingredients: Budesonide and Formoterol. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, swelling, and mucus production in the airways. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles around the airways, widening them and making it easier to breathe.

What is the usual dosage for FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS?

The usual dosage for adults (18 years and older) is typically 1 to 2 rotacaps, twice daily. The maximum recommended dose is usually 4 rotacaps, twice daily. For adolescents (12-17 years) and children (6-11 years), the dosage may vary and should be strictly as prescribed by a doctor. It is crucial to follow the doctor's instructions regarding dosage and frequency and not to exceed the prescribed amount.

What are the possible side effects of FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS?

Common side effects can include nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal passages and throat), headache, upper respiratory tract infection, pharyngolaryngeal pain (sore throat/voice box pain), sinusitis, nausea, vomiting, cough, and oral fungal infection (oral thrush). To help prevent oral thrush, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after using the inhaler. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Caution is advised while taking FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS during pregnancy. It is generally considered safe if prescribed by a doctor when the benefits outweigh the potential risks, as there is limited human data. Similarly, for breastfeeding mothers, consultation with a doctor is necessary to assess the potential risks and benefits, as budesonide is excreted in breast milk.

Can FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS be taken with other medications?

FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS can interact with several medications. It's important to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking. For example, antifungals (like ketoconazole, itraconazole), certain antibiotics (clarithromycin), and HIV protease inhibitors (ritonavir) may increase the effects of budesonide. Beta-blockers (like atenolol, propranolol) can block the broncho-dilating effect of formoterol, potentially causing severe breathing difficulties. Diuretics may also interact, potentially affecting potassium levels.

What precautions should be taken with FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS?

Precautions should be taken if you have conditions such as cardiovascular disorders (heart issues, high blood pressure), diabetes, osteoporosis, or liver and kidney problems. Long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids like budesonide can reduce bone mineral density. Use with caution if you have active or dormant tuberculosis or other untreated infections, as inhaled corticosteroids can weaken the immune system. Do not use this medicine if you have a known allergy to budesonide, formoterol, or any other ingredients. FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS is for inhalation only and should not be swallowed.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS be stored?

FORACORT 200 ROTACAPS should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 25°C or below 30°C. Keep the rotacaps in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Always keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children and use it before the expiry date marked on the packaging.
