Description

ROSULIP 40 MG (10 TAB)

Name

  • Brand Name: ROSULIP 40 MG
  • Common Name: Rosuvastatin (active ingredient)

Composition

Each film-coated tablet contains Rosuvastatin Calcium equivalent to 40 mg of Rosuvastatin.

Uses

ROSULIP 40 MG is primarily used to manage high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. It works as a statin to lower harmful fat production in the liver, thereby reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions by preventing fatty buildup in arteries. It also helps increase "good" cholesterol (HDL) and lowers "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides.

Dosage and Administration

The typical dose range for ROSULIP is 5 to 40 mg orally once daily. The usual starting dose for adults is 10-20 mg. The 40 mg dose should only be used for patients who have not achieved their LDL-C goal with a 20 mg dose. ROSULIP can be taken as a single dose at any time of day, with or without food, and the tablet should be swallowed whole. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after initiation or dosage adjustment.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include headache, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness (asthenia), constipation, dizziness, nausea, and abdominal pain. Serious but rare side effects can include severe muscle pain (myopathy) or rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to kidney damage, and hepatic failure.

Precautions

ROSULIP 40 MG is contraindicated in individuals allergic to rosuvastatin, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with active liver disease or severe kidney disease. Caution is advised for patients with predisposing factors for myopathy (e.g., age over 65, hypothyroidism, renal impairment), chronic alcohol consumption, or diabetes. It may interact with certain medications such as cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, protease inhibitors, fenofibrate, ezetimibe, and coumarin anticoagulants.

Storage

Store ROSULIP tablets at room temperature, below 30°C, and protect them from moisture and light. Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is ROSULIP 40 MG used for?

ROSULIP 40 MG, which contains the active ingredient rosuvastatin, is primarily used to lower high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It helps reduce "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides while increasing "good" cholesterol (HDL). By doing so, it helps prevent serious cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, particularly by slowing the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries (atherosclerosis).

How does ROSULIP 40 MG work?

ROSULIP 40 MG belongs to a class of medicines called statins. It works by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver known as HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the production of cholesterol in the body. By blocking it, ROSULIP 40 MG decreases the liver's production of cholesterol and enhances its ability to remove existing LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.

What is the usual dosage for ROSULIP 40 MG?

The dose range for ROSULIP in adults is typically 5 to 40 mg, taken once daily. The usual starting dose is often 10 to 20 mg once a day. The 40 mg dose is generally reserved for patients who have not achieved their target LDL-C levels with the 20 mg dose. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food, but taking it at the same time each day is recommended for consistency.

What are the possible side effects of ROSULIP 40 MG?

Common side effects may include headache, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness (asthenia), nausea, constipation, and dizziness. More serious, though rare, side effects can include severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) which may affect kidney function, liver problems, and an increase in blood sugar levels, potentially raising the risk for diabetes. If you experience unusual muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever or malaise, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Is ROSULIP 40 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, ROSULIP 40 MG is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may cause fetal harm, and women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception while taking this medication. During breastfeeding, rosuvastatin may pass into breast milk and could potentially harm the nursing infant. It is recommended to discontinue the medication if pregnancy is planned or detected, or during breastfeeding.

Can ROSULIP 40 MG be taken with other medications?

ROSULIP 40 MG can interact with certain medications. For instance:

  • Cyclosporine: Concomitant use can significantly increase rosuvastatin levels; the dose of ROSULIP should not exceed 5 mg daily.
  • Gemfibrozil: Increases the risk of muscle problems (myopathy); co-administration should generally be avoided, or the ROSULIP dose should not exceed 10 mg.
  • Protease Inhibitors (e.g., lopinavir/ritonavir, atazanavir/ritonavir): Can increase rosuvastatin exposure; ROSULIP dose may need to be limited to 10 mg.
  • Warfarin (blood thinner): Can enhance the effects of warfarin, increasing bleeding risk. Close monitoring of INR is necessary.
  • Antacids: Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxide should be taken no sooner than 2 hours after ROSULIP. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using ROSULIP 40 MG?

Several precautions should be considered:

  • Liver Conditions: ROSULIP 40 MG is not recommended for individuals with active liver disease and should be used with caution in those with chronic alcohol liver disease. Regular liver function tests are advised.
  • Kidney Impairment: Patients with severe kidney impairment may require a lower dosage.
  • Muscle Problems: Be cautious if you have predisposing factors for myopathy (e.g., age over 65, untreated hypothyroidism). Report any unexplained muscle pain or weakness immediately.
  • Diabetes: It may cause a slight increase in blood sugar levels, so diabetic patients should monitor their glucose closely.
  • Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of liver damage and other side effects.
  • Allergies: Do not take if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Lifestyle: This medication is most effective when combined with a healthy, low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and regular exercise.

What happens if a dose of ROSULIP 40 MG is missed?

If you miss a dose of ROSULIP 40 MG, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (e.g., less than 12 hours away), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should ROSULIP 40 MG be stored?

ROSULIP 40 MG tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, typically at or below 25°C. Keep them protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Always store the medicine out of sight and reach of children and pets.
