Frequently asked questions
What is PANTAKIND 80 TABLET used for?
PANTAKIND 80 TABLET is primarily used to reduce acid production in the stomach. It treats conditions such as peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), reflux esophagitis, and associated symptoms like acidity, heartburn, acid reflux, and difficulty swallowing. It can also be prescribed for stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and conditions involving excessive acid production like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How does PANTAKIND 80 TABLET work?
PANTAKIND 80 TABLET contains Pantoprazole, which belongs to a class of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It works by blocking the action of a protein membrane called H+K+ATPase, also known as the proton pump, located in the stomach lining. By inhibiting this pump, it reduces the secretion of gastric acid, thereby managing the worsening of ulcers, healing existing ulcers and esophageal lesions, and relieving symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract.
What is the usual dosage for PANTAKIND 80 TABLET?
The dosage of PANTAKIND 80 TABLET is determined by your doctor based on your specific condition, age, and response to treatment. Generally, it is taken once daily, at least one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. For conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, an initial dose of 80 mg daily may be prescribed, which can be adjusted up to 160 mg per day. It's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions and not exceed the recommended dose.
What are the possible side effects of PANTAKIND 80 TABLET?
Common side effects may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, flatulence, dizziness, dry mouth, and joint pain.
More serious side effects, though rare, can occur with long-term use (over 3 months to a year or more). These may include low magnesium levels (symptoms like tiredness, confusion, dizziness, muscle twitches, or irregular heartbeat), increased risk of bone fractures (especially in the hip, wrist, or spine), and vitamin B12 deficiency. Other serious but rare side effects can include severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), liver problems, severe skin reactions, and kidney problems. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Is PANTAKIND 80 TABLET safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
- Pregnancy: Limited information is available regarding the use of PANTAKIND 80 TABLET during pregnancy. It should generally be used only if considered necessary by a physician, as the potential risks and benefits need to be carefully weighed. Some studies suggest it is likely safe, especially in the second and third trimesters, but caution is advised, and your doctor may recommend alternative medications like omeprazole if your symptoms are mild.
- Breastfeeding: Pantoprazole, the active ingredient, passes into breast milk in small amounts. It is generally considered safe if prescribed by your doctor, but it's important to monitor your baby for any unusual symptoms. Always consult your doctor before taking this medicine while breastfeeding.
Can PANTAKIND 80 TABLET be taken with other medications?
PANTAKIND 80 TABLET can interact with several other medications, which may affect their effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. Notable interactions include:
- Antifungals: Such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and posaconazole.
- Anti-cancer agents: Like erlotinib, methotrexate, dasatinib, and gefitinib.
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners): Such as warfarin and phenprocoumon.
- Anti-HIV drugs: Especially rilpivirine (co-administration is contraindicated) and atazanavir.
- Antidepressants: Like fluvoxamine.
- Antibiotics: Such as rifampicin.
- Other medications: Including iron supplements, digoxin, and certain diuretics.
Your doctor can advise on necessary adjustments or alternative treatments.
What precautions should be taken while using PANTAKIND 80 TABLET?
Before taking PANTAKIND 80 TABLET, inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney, or heart problems. Also, mention if you have weak bones (osteoporosis), a history of bleeding in the gut, or low levels of magnesium, calcium, or vitamin B12 in your blood. If you are scheduled for an endoscopy, inform your doctor as pantoprazole can mask certain problems. Avoid consuming alcohol frequently, as it can irritate your stomach lining and worsen symptoms.
What happens if a dose of PANTAKIND 80 TABLET is missed?
If you miss a dose of PANTAKIND 80 TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten one.
How should PANTAKIND 80 TABLET be stored?
PANTAKIND 80 TABLET should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine in a tightly closed container and out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine past its expiry date.
