SALICURE 6 Ointment

SALICURE 6 Ointment, manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is a topical medication primarily used for various skin conditions.

Composition The ointment contains Salicylic Acid 6% w/w and Urea 10% w/w. These active ingredients function as keratolytic agents, helping to increase moisture in the skin, dissolve keratin, and promote the shedding of dead skin cells. Urea also contributes to skin hydration and softening.

Uses SALICURE 6 is prescribed for the treatment of several skin disorders, including:

  • Eczema: Characterized by red, itchy, and inflamed skin.
  • Psoriasis: An autoimmune condition causing scaly, swollen, and itchy skin patches.
  • Acne: Helps clear clogged pores and smooth skin texture by reducing oil production.
  • Keratosis: Rough, scaly patches on the skin.
  • Calluses: Thickened layers of skin.
  • Warts: Small, fleshy bumps on the skin. It also possesses emollient (skin softening), anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties.

Dosage and Administration This medicine is for external use only. It should be applied as a thin layer to the clean, dry affected area, as advised by a doctor. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, genitals, or any broken skin such as cuts, rashes, or open wounds. Hands should be washed thoroughly before and after application, unless the treatment is for the hands themselves.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • Irritation and redness at the application site
  • Peeling of the skin
  • Thinning or whitening of the skin

More serious, though rare, side effects can occur with high doses or prolonged use if absorbed through the skin. Symptoms of overdose (salicylism) may include severe weakness or dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, confusion, ringing in the ears, rapid breathing, or hearing loss. Seek immediate medical attention if these or any severe allergic reactions (e.g., severe headache, dizziness, breathing difficulty, severe burning of the skin) are experienced.

Precautions

  • Do not use on red, swollen, infected, or oozing skin.
  • Not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women and elderly individuals; consult a doctor.
  • May increase skin sensitivity to the sun; take precautions and avoid tanning beds or sunlamps.
  • The salicylic acid component is flammable; avoid smoking or being near open flames due to a risk of serious burns.
  • Do not use in children with fever, flu symptoms, or chickenpox, as it may lead to Reye's syndrome.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease or poor blood circulation.
  • Avoid using abrasive soaps, cleansers, or alcohol-containing products on the treated area.

Storage Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, preferably below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

SALICURE 6 by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is a topical medication primarily containing Salicylic Acid 6%, often combined with Urea, used to treat various skin conditions. It works by helping the skin shed dead cells and promoting healing.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Salicure 6:

What is Salicure 6 used for?

Salicure 6 is used to treat hyperkeratotic (thickened, scaly) skin disorders. These include conditions like psoriasis, eczema, acne, warts (including plantar warts), calluses, corns, keratosis pilaris, and pityriasis rubra pilaris.

How does Salicure 6 work?

Salicure 6, containing Salicylic Acid, acts as a keratolytic or peeling agent. It works by softening keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. This process helps to dissolve the "intercellular cement" between skin cells, increasing moisture in the skin, and making it easier for dead skin cells from the top layer to shed. This helps to unclog pores, reduce scaling and dryness, and allows other medications (if used in combination) to penetrate more effectively. If it also contains Urea, Urea further enhances hydration and helps to reduce the buildup of dead skin cells.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

The preferable method of use is to apply Salicure 6 thoroughly to the affected area, usually once daily at bedtime, after washing. It's often recommended to hydrate the skin for at least five minutes prior to application. The medication is typically washed off in the morning. If excessive drying or irritation occurs, a bland cream or lotion may be applied. Once the skin clears, occasional use may maintain remission. Unless treating the hands, they should be rinsed thoroughly after application. Avoid applying large amounts or using it more often than directed, as this will not increase benefit and could lead to side effects.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects can include burning, redness (erythema), stinging, itching, and peeling skin in the treated area. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Serious, but rare, side effects can occur if too much salicylic acid is absorbed into the bloodstream (salicylism). Symptoms of salicylate toxicity include unexplained nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, dizziness, hearing problems (such as ringing in the ears or hearing loss), mental/mood changes, and tiredness. Children under 12 and individuals with kidney or liver problems are at higher risk for systemic side effects.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Salicure 6 (Salicylic Acid 6%) should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as salicylic acid has shown teratogenic effects in animal studies. It is unknown if topical salicylic acid passes into breast milk. If used by nursing mothers, it should not be applied to the chest area to avoid accidental contamination of the child. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, considering its importance to the mother. It should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Salicylic acid can interact with other medications. Concomitant use of other drugs that may contribute to elevated serum salicylate levels should be avoided. Interactions include those with sulfonylureas (potentiating hypoglycemia), methotrexate (decreasing tubular reabsorption and potentially increasing methotrexate toxicity), oral anticoagulants (increasing bleeding risk), and corticosteroids (which can decrease plasma salicylate levels). It can also influence the serum levels of salicylate when taken with acidifying or alkalizing agents. It may also enhance the absorption of other topical medications.

What precautions should be taken?

Salicure 6 is for external dermatologic use only and should not be used on open skin lesions, broken skin, infected or inflamed skin, or on moles or birthmarks. Avoid contact with eyes, nostrils, mouth, lips, genitals, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, flush the area with cool water for 15 minutes. Do not use occlusive dressings, clothing, or petrolatum-based ointments over the treated area unless directed by a doctor, as this can increase systemic absorption. Due to the potential risk of Reye's syndrome, salicylate products should not be used in children and teenagers with varicella (chickenpox) or influenza (flu), or any undiagnosed illness, unless directed by a physician. It should not be used in children under 2 years of age. Caution is advised for individuals with kidney or liver problems.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

How should it be stored?

Salicure 6 should be stored at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F) away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep the medication in a closed container and out of the reach of children and pets. If it is a foam canister, store it upright and do not burn or puncture the canister as contents are under pressure.
