DESOWEN LOTION-30 ML

Name: DESOWEN Lotion (brand name), Desonide topical (common name)

Composition: DESOWEN Lotion contains desonide 0.05% w/v (0.5 mg/g) as its active ingredient. It also includes excipients such as sodium lauryl sulfate, light liquid paraffin, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, sorbitan monostearate, self-emulsifying glyceryl monostearate, edetate sodium, purified water, citric acid, and sodium hydroxide.

Uses: DESOWEN Lotion is a corticosteroid primarily used for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic (itchy) manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. It is prescribed for conditions such as:

  • Eczema (atopic, contact)
  • Psoriasis
  • Dermatitis (seborrheic, contact)
  • General skin rashes, irritation, and inflammation

It works by reducing redness, swelling, and itching by blocking certain chemical substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Apply a thin film to the affected areas two to three times daily, depending on the severity of the condition.
  • Shake the lotion well before using.
  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, mouth, nose, or broken skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not use occlusive dressings (bandages) unless specifically instructed by a doctor.
  • Periods of continuous treatment should not exceed 8 weeks in adults or children.
  • Wash hands carefully after application.

Side Effects:

  • Common (less than 1 in 10 patients): Skin burning sensation, irritation, itching, redness, dryness, peeling, stinging, acne, and inflammation of hair follicles.
  • Uncommon (less than 1 in 100 patients) / Serious: Hives, excessive hair growth, skin discoloration, fragile skin, skin lesions, aggravation of rosacea, headache, stretch marks, rash, erythema (redness), facial swelling, blurred vision, cataracts, glaucoma. Prolonged or high-dose use, especially over large areas or under occlusive dressings, can lead to systemic effects like HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, and growth retardation in children.

Precautions:

  • Do not use if allergic to desonide or any other ingredients.
  • Avoid use on skin areas affected by viral (e.g., cold sores, chickenpox), fungal (e.g., thrush, ringworm), or parasitic skin infections, acne, rosacea, or ulcerous wounds unless advised by a doctor.
  • Use with caution in children (not recommended under 2 years, some sources say 3 months) due to a greater susceptibility to systemic toxicity.
  • Inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions (e.g., diabetes), other medications, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use for longer than directed by your doctor.

Storage:

  • Store in the original bottle in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children and pets.
  • Do not store in a bathroom or near a sink, or leave in a car or on window sills, as heat and dampness can destroy the medicine.
Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions and answers about DESOWEN LOTION-30 ML:

What is DESOWEN Lotion used for?

DESOWEN Lotion is a topical corticosteroid primarily used to treat various inflammatory and itchy skin conditions. It is commonly prescribed for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema), seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, skin rashes, and general skin inflammation. It can also help reduce the redness and scaling associated with psoriasis.

How does DESOWEN Lotion work?

DESOWEN Lotion contains Desonide as its active ingredient. Desonide is a mild to moderate strength corticosteroid that works by blocking the production of certain chemical substances, such as prostaglandins, in the body that cause allergic reactions and inflammation. This action helps to reduce redness, itching, irritation, and swelling in the affected skin areas.

What is the usual dosage of DESOWEN Lotion?

DESOWEN Lotion should be applied as a thin film to the affected skin areas two to three times daily, or as directed by your doctor, depending on the severity of your condition. It is for external use only, and the bottle should be shaken well before use. Treatment should generally not exceed 8 weeks in adults or children.

What are the possible side effects of DESOWEN Lotion?

Common side effects can include skin peeling, dryness, a burning sensation, irritation, stinging, itching, and redness at the site of application. Less common side effects may include acne, inflammation of hair follicles, hives, excessive hair growth, skin discoloration, stretch marks, and fragile skin. Prolonged or extensive use, especially on large body areas, can lead to more serious systemic effects such as hormonal changes (e.g., Cushing's syndrome symptoms), suppression of the immune response, and growth retardation in children.

Is DESOWEN Lotion safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: DESOWEN Lotion is classified as a Pregnancy Category C medicine. There are limited studies in humans, and animal studies have indicated potential harmful effects on a developing baby. Therefore, it should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits justify the potential risks, as determined by your doctor.

Breastfeeding: DESOWEN Lotion is considered probably safe for use during breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests no significant risk to the baby. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor before use, and the lotion should not be applied to the breast or nipple area to prevent direct contact with the infant.

Can DESOWEN Lotion be taken with other medications?

Using DESOWEN Lotion concurrently with other corticosteroids (oral, drops, or injections) may increase the risk and intensity of side effects. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and other topical treatments, as moderate drug interactions are known.

What precautions should be taken when using DESOWEN Lotion?

DESOWEN Lotion is for external use on the skin only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and nose, and rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not apply it to broken skin, open wounds, or areas affected by viral (e.g., cold sores, chickenpox), fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infections, acne, or rosacea, unless specifically instructed by your doctor. Do not cover the treated area with occlusive dressings, such as bandages, unless your doctor advises, as this can increase medicine absorption and the risk of side effects. Do not use the lotion for more than 4 to 8 weeks without consulting your doctor. It is not recommended for children under 3 months of age and should be used with caution in children due to increased potential for systemic absorption and growth retardation. If your skin condition does not improve after two to four weeks, consult your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or any pre-existing heart, kidney, or liver conditions.

What happens if a dose of DESOWEN Lotion is missed?

If you miss a dose of DESOWEN Lotion, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should DESOWEN Lotion be stored?

Store DESOWEN Lotion in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. The ideal storage temperature is between 10°C to 30°C (50°F to 86°F). Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use and keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Do not freeze the lotion.
