Frequently asked questions

What is SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop used for?

SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop is primarily used to relieve dry, irritated eyes. It helps to alleviate symptoms such as burning, stinging, grittiness, and discomfort caused by dryness from environmental factors like wind, sun, heating/air conditioning, computer use, or certain medications. It can also be used for rewetting all silicone hydrogel and soft (hydrophilic) contact lenses for minor irritation and discomfort. Additionally, it is recommended for dry eye symptoms in post-LASIK or post-cataract surgery patients.

How does SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop work?

This eye drop contains active ingredients such as Sodium Hyaluronate, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG 400), and Propylene Glycol. Sodium Hyaluronate acts as artificial tears, attracting and retaining moisture on the eye surface. Polyethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol serve as lubricating agents. The advanced hydration formula, including Hyaluronic Acid and HP-Guar (hydroxypropyl guar), works by forming a protective gel matrix on the ocular surface. This matrix binds to damaged areas, entraps water for increased hydration, and prolongs the retention of lubricating ingredients, thus providing long-lasting relief and supporting the corneal healing process.

What is the usual dosage for SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop?

The typical dosage is to place 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed throughout the day. Some recommendations suggest using it 2 to 3 times a day or as often as necessary to relieve dryness and irritation.

What are the possible side effects of SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop?

Most people do not experience serious side effects. Common temporary side effects may include blurred vision, minor burning, stinging, or irritation, itching, redness, watery eyes, or sensitivity to light. If these effects persist or worsen, or if you experience severe symptoms like eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation, or signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching/swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing), discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately.

Is SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

While generally considered safe, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider or doctor before using SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop if you are pregnant or breastfeeding to ensure it is safe for you and your baby.

Can SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop be used with other medications?

If you are using other eye drops or ointments, you should wait at least 5 minutes between applications. It is generally recommended to use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the drops to properly enter the eye. Interactions with systemic medications are not expected.

What precautions should be taken when using SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop?

To prevent contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye or fingers, and always replace the cap tightly after use. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops unless the product specifically states it can be used with lenses, and wait for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery. Discontinue use and consult a doctor if your eye symptoms worsen or persist for more than 72 hours. This product is for external ocular use only.

What happens if a dose is missed?

Since SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop is typically used as needed, a missed dose is generally not a concern. If you are following a specific dosing schedule and miss a dose, simply apply it when you remember, but do not double the dose. An overdose of ocular lubricant is not expected to be dangerous if accidentally swallowed, but you should contact a poison control center immediately.

How should SYSTANE HYDRATION Lubricant Eye Drop be stored?

Store the eye drops at room temperature, ideally between 2°C and 30°C (36°F and 86°F), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. For the 10 mL multi-dose bottle, discard any remaining solution three months after first opening the packaging. Single-use vials should be discarded immediately after each use.
