Frequently asked questions
METASPRAY NASAL SPRAY (Mometasone Furoate) by CIPLA LTD.
What is Metaspray Nasal Spray used for?
Metaspray Nasal Spray is primarily used to prevent and treat symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, and itchy nose. It is also indicated for the treatment of nasal polyps in adults.
How does Metaspray Nasal Spray work?
Metaspray Nasal Spray contains Mometasone Furoate, a corticosteroid. It works by being absorbed into the cells on the inner surface of the nose, where it blocks the production of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation and allergies. This action helps reduce swelling and irritation, relieving symptoms like blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and sinus discomfort.
What is the usual dosage of Metaspray Nasal Spray?
The dosage varies depending on the condition and age:
- For allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and older: The recommended dose is two sprays (50 mcg of Mometasone Furoate per spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 100 mcg). For prophylaxis of seasonal allergic rhinitis, it may be recommended 2 to 4 weeks prior to the anticipated pollen season.
- For allergic rhinitis in children 2 to 11 years of age: The recommended dose is one spray (50 mcg in each spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 100 mcg).
- For nasal polyps in adults 18 years and older: The recommended dose is two sprays (50 mcg in each spray) in each nostril twice daily (total daily dose of 400 mcg). A dose of two sprays in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg) may also be effective for some patients. Always follow your doctor's instructions.
What are the possible side effects of Metaspray Nasal Spray?
Common side effects are generally mild and may include nasal irritation, sore throat, nosebleeds, headache, wheezing, upper respiratory tract infection, viral infection, and coughing. If you are concerned about any side effects, inform your doctor.
Is Metaspray Nasal Spray safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Metaspray Nasal Spray may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. While there are limited human studies, animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits against any potential risks before prescribing it. Breastfeeding: Metaspray Nasal Spray is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby. Very little of the medicine is likely to pass into breast milk or be absorbed by the baby.
Can Metaspray Nasal Spray be taken with other medications?
There are generally no drug interactions of note with Metaspray (mometasone furoate) when used as a nasal spray. However, it's advisable to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as mometasone can have potential interactions with certain steroids, antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), anti-HIV medications (e.g., ritonavir), and antidepressants (e.g., nefazodone).
What precautions should be taken when using Metaspray Nasal Spray?
Before using Metaspray Nasal Spray, inform your doctor if you have a recent nasal injury or surgery, sores in your nose, active or dormant tuberculous infection, untreated fungal, bacterial, or systemic viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex. Prolonged use of high doses may suppress the immune system, increasing the risk of infections. Avoid situations that worsen your symptoms and it's best not to smoke.
What happens if a dose of Metaspray Nasal Spray is missed?
If you forget a dose, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one, as this may increase the chances of side effects.
How should Metaspray Nasal Spray be stored?
Metaspray Nasal Spray should be stored below 25°C or 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from light and moisture. It should not be frozen and must be kept out of the reach of children. Any remaining spray should be discarded two months after first opening the bottle.
