Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about UDI 1 300MG TAB, which contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid.

What is UDI 1 300MG TAB used for?

UDI 1 300MG TAB (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is primarily used for the treatment of various liver and gallbladder conditions. These include dissolving small to medium-sized cholesterol gallstones that are not visible on X-rays, treating primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), which is an autoimmune liver disease, preventing gallstone formation in obese patients undergoing rapid weight loss, and managing liver and biliary diseases associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6 to 18 years.

How does UDI 1 300MG TAB work?

UDI 1 300MG TAB works by introducing Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), a naturally occurring bile acid, into the body. It functions by reducing the amount of cholesterol the liver produces and the intestines absorb, thereby decreasing the cholesterol saturation in bile. This action helps to dissolve existing cholesterol-rich gallstones and prevents new ones from forming. Additionally, it protects liver cells from damage caused by more toxic bile acids and improves bile flow and overall liver function.

What is the usual dosage for UDI 1 300MG TAB?

The dosage of UDI 1 300MG TAB varies significantly depending on the condition being treated and the patient's body weight. For dissolving gallstones, the typical dosage is 8-12 mg/kg per day, often taken once daily at bedtime or divided into two doses. For primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), the usual dosage ranges from 12-16 mg/kg per day, given in two to four divided doses. In children aged 6 to 18 years with cystic fibrosis-related liver conditions, the dose is generally 20 mg/kg per day, given in 2-3 divided doses, which may be increased to 30 mg/kg per day if necessary. It is important to take the tablets with or immediately after food.

What are the possible side effects of UDI 1 300MG TAB?

Common side effects associated with UDI 1 300MG TAB include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, indigestion, headache, muscle or joint pain, and skin rashes. While most side effects are mild and resolve on their own, rarely, more serious issues such as severe right upper abdominal pain or a worsening of liver cirrhosis have been reported. If you experience persistent or concerning side effects, consult your healthcare professional.

Is UDI 1 300MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: UDI 1 300MG TAB (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor deems it absolutely necessary, as there is limited data from well-controlled studies in pregnant women. However, it is sometimes used to treat intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.

During Breastfeeding: Ursodeoxycholic acid is present in human breast milk in low concentrations, and the amounts ingested by a breastfed infant are typically small. Therefore, it is generally considered safe during breastfeeding, with no expected adverse effects on the infant. Ursodeoxycholic acid has even been used directly in newborns for the treatment of jaundice.

Can UDI 1 300MG TAB be taken with other medications?

UDI 1 300MG TAB can interact with certain other medications. Bile acid sequestering agents (e.g., cholestyramine, colestipol) and aluminum-based antacids can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of Ursodeoxycholic Acid. Some cholesterol-lowering medications containing estrogen or clofibrate may promote gallstone formation, counteracting its effects. Additionally, Ursodeoxycholic Acid may influence the absorption or blood levels of drugs such as cyclosporine, ciprofloxacin, dapsone, and nitrendipine. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking UDI 1 300MG TAB?

Before taking UDI 1 300MG TAB, inform your doctor about any allergies to the medicine or its ingredients, any existing gastrointestinal conditions (such as acute gallbladder inflammation, bile duct obstruction, or active ulcers), or if you have calcified gallstones. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is crucial during treatment. Women taking UDI 1 300MG TAB for gallstone dissolution should avoid hormonal birth control, as these can promote gallstone formation.

What happens if a dose of UDI 1 300MG TAB is missed?

If you miss a dose of UDI 1 300MG TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should UDI 1 300MG TAB be stored?

UDI 1 300MG TAB should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Ensure it is kept out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store it in the bathroom or near a kitchen sink.
