Frequently asked questions
RELAXYL GEL (20 GM) by FRANCO-INDIAN PHARMACEUTICALS PVT. LTD. is a topical medication commonly used for pain relief. Below are frequently asked questions regarding its use.
What is Relaxyl Gel used for?
Relaxyl Gel is primarily used to relieve acute musculoskeletal pain and joint pain, including that caused by osteoarthritis, sprains, strains, and sports injuries. It helps reduce pain, swelling, and joint stiffness, which can improve movement and flexibility. It can also be used for conditions like muscle pain, back pain, cervical spondylitis, lumbago, frozen shoulder, arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.
How does Relaxyl Gel work?
Relaxyl Gel contains a combination of active ingredients: Diclofenac Diethylamine (equivalent to Diclofenac Sodium), Linseed Oil, Methyl Salicylate, and Menthol.
- Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking the release of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause pain and inflammation (redness and swelling).
- Methyl Salicylate acts as a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent, providing pain relief by reducing inflammation and swelling.
- Linseed Oil (also known as flaxseed oil) possesses anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation in the applied area.
- Menthol provides a cooling sensation on the skin, which can help alleviate pain and discomfort, followed by a warming effect that interferes with pain signal transmission through nerves. Together, these ingredients offer a multi-modal approach to pain and inflammation relief.
What is the usual dosage and application method for Relaxyl Gel?
Relaxyl Gel is for external (topical) application only. It is typically applied to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily, or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after applying the gel. Apply a small amount of the gel to the affected area and gently rub it in until absorbed. Do not apply more than the recommended dose. Avoid showering for at least one hour after application.
What are the possible side effects of Relaxyl Gel?
Common side effects are usually mild and short-lived, including burning, itching, redness, stinging, and dryness on the skin at the application site. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor. Less common but more serious side effects may include severe skin allergies. Accidental swallowing of the gel may be harmful and requires immediate medical attention.
Is Relaxyl Gel safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Relaxyl Gel should generally be avoided during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, as diclofenac (one of its active ingredients) can cause problems inside the womb, affecting blood flow or reducing amniotic fluid. It should only be used if advised by a doctor, where the benefits outweigh the risks, and typically for a short duration. Paracetamol is generally the first choice for pain relief during pregnancy. Breastfeeding: Diclofenac gel is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, as only tiny amounts pass into breast milk, and it is not expected to cause side effects in the baby. However, if you are breastfeeding, take care that your baby does not touch any areas where the gel has been applied. Wash your hands after using it and before picking up your baby. Consult your healthcare provider before use to assess potential risks.
Can Relaxyl Gel be taken with other medications?
Relaxyl Gel is for topical application, so it is less likely to interact significantly with orally taken medicines. However, inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid any possible interactions. Simultaneous application of other topical products on the same area should be avoided. Caution is advised when using other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or blood thinners, as diclofenac in the gel may increase the risk of side effects.
What precautions should be taken while using Relaxyl Gel?
- Allergies: Do not use Relaxyl Gel if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or other pain relievers like ibuprofen or aspirin.
- External Use Only: It is strictly for external use. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, mucous membranes, or open wounds. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have asthma, liver disease, kidney disease, stomach/intestine problems (like bleeding or ulcers), cardiovascular diseases, swelling, blood disorders, or if you have recently undergone heart bypass surgery.
- Children: Relaxyl Gel is contraindicated in children below two years of age due to the presence of methyl salicylate, which may induce Reye's Syndrome in children with viral flu, chickenpox, or viral fever. Caution should be exercised when treating older children (2-12 years). It is not recommended for children less than 14 years unless directed by a doctor.
- Heat Application: Do not apply external heat or occlusive dressings (bandages) on the treated area.
- Sun Exposure: Avoid exposure of the treated area to normal or artificial sunlight.
What happens if a dose of Relaxyl Gel is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. Do not apply extra gel to compensate for the missed dose.
How should Relaxyl Gel be stored?
Store Relaxyl Gel in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, at room temperature (10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC). Keep it out of sight and reach of children. Ensure the cap is tightly closed after use.
