Description
CEPODEM DROPS
Name: Cepodem Oral Drops, Cepodem Drops Dry Suspension, Cepodem Orange Flavour Drops/Suspension. The common name for the active ingredient is Cefpodoxime.
Composition: The active ingredient is Cefpodoxime Proxetil. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics.
Uses: Cepodem Drops are primarily prescribed to children for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections. These include infections of the ears (acute otitis media), eyes, nose (sinusitis), throat (pharyngitis/tonsillitis), lungs (pneumonia, bronchitis), skin, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is also effective in managing typhoid fever in children and adolescents.
Dosage and Administration: Administer Cepodem Drops as directed by a physician. To prepare the suspension, tap the bottle to loosen the powder, then add two-thirds of the sterile water provided and shake vigorously. Add more water up to the marked line and shake well. Allow it to stand for 5 minutes. Use a medicine dropper to measure the exact dose. It can be given one hour before or two hours after meals; if stomach upset occurs, administer with food. The dose and duration depend on the child's age, weight, and the type/severity of the infection. The full course of treatment should be completed even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Side Effects: Common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Less common side effects can include skin rash and vaginal discharge in females. Serious side effects, though rare, may include severe diarrhea due to pseudomembranous colitis or signs of an allergic reaction like skin rash, joint pain, swelling of the face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing/swallowing. Immediate medical attention is required if these serious side effects occur.
Precautions: Cepodem Drops should not be administered to children allergic to Cefpodoxime, cephalosporin antibiotics, or those with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Caution is advised in children with impaired kidney function, liver problems, or a history of gastrointestinal diseases (especially colitis). Inform the doctor about any other medicines, supplements, or herbal products being taken, as interactions can occur with antacids, cimetidine, ranitidine, propantheline, probenecid, and some nephrotoxic medicines. This medicine is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
Storage: Store the dry powder in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C or 30°C. Once reconstituted with water, the suspension should be stored in the refrigerator (between 2-8°C) and any unused portion discarded after 14 days. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about CEPODEM DROPS by SUN RANBAXY-PHARMACARE DIV:
What is CEPODEM DROPS used for?
CEPODEM DROPS DRY SUSPENSION is an antibiotic primarily prescribed for children to treat a variety of bacterial infections. These include infections of the ears (acute otitis media), nose, throat (pharyngitis/tonsillitis), lungs (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract (cystitis), skin and soft tissues, and sinusitis. It is also used to treat typhoid fever in children and adolescents. It is important to note that CEPODEM DROPS is effective only against bacterial infections and does not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu.
How does CEPODEM DROPS work?
CEPODEM DROPS contains Cefpodoxime proxetil, which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall, a protective covering essential for bacteria to survive and multiply. By disrupting this cell wall synthesis, the medicine kills the bacteria and helps eliminate the infection.
What is the usual dosage for CEPODEM DROPS?
The correct dose and duration of CEPODEM DROPS are determined by a child's doctor based on factors such as their age, body weight, and the type and severity of the infection. It is typically administered orally as a liquid suspension. For children aged 2 months to 12 years, a common pediatric dose is 5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 5-10 days, with a maximum dose of 200 mg per dose. The medicine should be given as advised by the physician, often one hour before or two hours after meals, though it can be given with food if stomach upset occurs.
What are the possible side effects of CEPODEM DROPS?
Common side effects associated with CEPODEM DROPS include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Other potential side effects may include skin rash, including diaper rashes and fungal skin rashes. Most of these side effects are usually mild, temporary, and tend to resolve as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if any side effects persist, worsen, or if your child experiences severe diarrhea, signs of an allergic reaction (like severe rash, joint pain, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue), immediate medical attention should be sought.
Is CEPODEM DROPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
CEPODEM DROPS DRY SUSPENSION is primarily for pediatric use and is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. While some sources indicate it may be considered safe if prescribed during pregnancy based on animal studies, and safe for breastfeeding mothers, this is typically under specific medical advice and it's contraindicated in general as it is intended for children.
Can CEPODEM DROPS be taken with other medications?
CEPODEM DROPS can interact with certain other medications. It is important to inform the doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products your child is currently taking. Medicines used to manage stomach acid symptoms, such as antacids (e.g., aluminium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone) and H2 antagonists (e.g., ranitidine, cimetidine, famotidine), can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of CEPODEM DROPS. Propantheline, used for gastric ulcers, can also delay its peak levels. Probenecid, on the other hand, can increase the effect of Cefpodoxime.
What precautions should be taken with CEPODEM DROPS?
Several precautions should be taken when administering CEPODEM DROPS:
- Allergies: Do not give CEPODEM DROPS if your child is allergic to cefpodoxime, cephalosporin antibiotics (like cefuroxime, cefixime), or has a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
- Medical Conditions: Use with caution in children with impaired kidney function, liver problems, or a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis. Your child's doctor may monitor blood count and liver enzymes.
- Viral Infections: This medicine is an antibiotic and is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Only administer it for cough and cold symptoms if a secondary bacterial infection has been diagnosed by a doctor.
- Completing the Course: It is crucial to complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if the child starts feeling better, to effectively eradicate the infection and prevent antibiotic resistance.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose of CEPODEM DROPS is missed, it should be given as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should CEPODEM DROPS be stored?
The dry powder should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Once the dry powder is reconstituted by adding sterile water, the suspension should be stored in the refrigerator (between 2-8°C). Do not freeze the reconstituted suspension, as it may become less effective. Any unused portion of the reconstituted suspension should be discarded after 14 days. Keep the medicine out of the reach and sight of children.
