Description
SITACIP M 50/1000 Tablet
SITACIP M 50/1000 Tablet is a prescription medication manufactured by Cipla Ltd.. It is a combination oral antidiabetic drug used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
-
Composition
- Sitagliptin: 50 mg
- Metformin Hydrochloride: 1000 mg
-
Uses SITACIP M 50/1000 is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is used when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels. This medication works to improve glycemic control by reducing both fasting and post-meal blood glucose concentrations, enhancing the body's sensitivity to insulin, and decreasing glucose production by the liver. It helps in preventing serious complications associated with diabetes, such as kidney damage, eye damage, nerve problems, heart disease, and stroke.
-
Dosage and Administration This medicine should be taken as advised by your physician. It is generally recommended to swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably with food or after meals, to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet.
-
Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort/pain, headache, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, characterized by shakiness, sweating, confusion, or dizziness), nasopharyngitis (runny nose, sore throat), upper respiratory tract infection, altered/metallic taste, flatulence, constipation, and joint pain.
- Serious Side Effects (Rare): Lactic acidosis (symptoms include muscle pain, dizziness, cold extremities, difficulty breathing, severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or a slow heart rate), severe allergic reactions (hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat causing difficulty breathing), severe blistering of the skin (bullous pemphigoid), and pancreatitis (severe and persistent pain in the stomach area that may radiate to the back, with or without nausea and vomiting). Long-term use may also lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Precautions SITACIP M 50/1000 is not recommended for individuals with allergies to its components, severe kidney or liver impairment, congestive heart failure, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe uncontrollable diabetes, or a history of alcoholism. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Caution is advised in patients with heart problems. Avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and kidney function is advisable during treatment. Patients should inform their doctor about any history of pancreatitis.

Frequently asked questions
SITACIP M 50/1000 is a combination medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It contains two active ingredients: Sitagliptin (50 mg) and Metformin (1000 mg).
What is SITACIP M 50/1000 used for?
SITACIP M 50/1000 is prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels. It helps to improve glycemic control by reducing both fasting and post-meal blood glucose concentrations.
How does SITACIP M 50/1000 work?
This medicine combines two different mechanisms of action. Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) in the body. These hormones increase insulin synthesis and release from the pancreas when blood glucose levels are high and also reduce glucagon secretion, which decreases liver glucose production. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily works by reducing glucose production in the liver, delaying glucose absorption from the intestines, and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing for more effective glucose utilization.
What is the usual dosage for SITACIP M 50/1000?
The dosage of SITACIP M 50/1000 should be determined and adjusted by a doctor based on the individual's condition and blood sugar levels. It is generally taken twice daily with meals to minimize stomach upset. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, split, or chewed. For patients already on metformin, the initial sitagliptin dose is often 50 mg twice a day, with the same metformin dose. The maximum recommended daily dose is usually not more than 100 mg of sitagliptin and 2000 mg of metformin.
What are the possible side effects of SITACIP M 50/1000?
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, and nasopharyngitis (cold-like symptoms). Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is also a possible side effect, especially if taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, and can cause shakiness, sweating, confusion, or dizziness. Rarely, serious side effects like lactic acidosis (a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood) and pancreatitis can occur. Long-term use of metformin can also lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency.
Is SITACIP M 50/1000 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Caution is advised during pregnancy. SITACIP M 50/1000 is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the baby, and it is usually contraindicated. Similarly, it is generally not recommended for use by breastfeeding women as the drug may pass into breast milk and harm the baby. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can SITACIP M 50/1000 be taken with other medications?
SITACIP M 50/1000 can interact with certain medications. Taking it with insulin or other antidiabetic medicines may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Diuretics (like furosemide) and cationic medicines (like digoxin, morphine, vancomycin) may interfere with metformin's action. Calcium channel blockers (like nifedipine) may increase blood glucose levels, potentially counteracting the effect of SITACIP M 50/1000. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken?
SITACIP M 50/1000 is not recommended for individuals with severe kidney or liver disease, type 1 diabetes, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Exercise caution if you have heart problems, a history of pancreatitis, or low vitamin B12 levels. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Your doctor may monitor blood sugar levels and kidney function regularly during treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness or low blood sugar.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of SITACIP M 50/1000, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should SITACIP M 50/1000 be stored?
SITACIP M 50/1000 should be stored below 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and do not remove tablets from their original packaging until needed. Always check the expiry date and discard any expired tablets properly.
