MCV DS Suspension

Name: Mcv DS Suspension (Commonly referred to as Mcv DS 5.5gm Orange Suspension or Mcv Ds 200/28.5 MG Suspension 50 ML) Manufacturer: Maneesh Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Composition: Mcv DS Suspension contains two active ingredients:

  • Amoxicillin: 200 mg
  • Clavulanic Acid: 28.5 mg

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that works by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the survival of bacteria. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that blocks the action of enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby preventing them from destroying amoxicillin and enhancing its efficacy against resistant bacteria.

Uses: Mcv DS Suspension is a broad-spectrum antibiotic prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children, and it is also effective against bacteria that have developed resistance to other treatments.

  • Bacterial Infections: Including respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, middle ear infections), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and bone and joint infections.
  • Resistance Tuberculosis (TB): Helps treat tuberculosis that is resistant to other treatments.

Dosage and Administration: Administer Mcv DS Suspension orally, usually two to three times a day, or as prescribed by a doctor. It can be given with or without food, though giving it with food may help increase absorption and reduce stomach upset.

  • Preparation: The dry syrup needs to be mixed with sterile water as per the instructions on the pack.
  • Measurement: Use the measuring cup, dosing syringe, or dropper provided to ensure accurate dosage. Avoid using regular household spoons.
  • Shaking: Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Course Completion: It is crucial to complete the entire prescribed course of the antibiotic, even if symptoms improve, to prevent bacteria from multiplying again or becoming resistant.
  • Missed/Repeated Dose: If a dose is vomited within 30 minutes, let the child calm down and repeat the dose. Do not double dose if it's time for the next scheduled dose.

Side Effects: Common side effects usually diminish on their own as the body adapts to the medicine. However, if they persist or worsen, consult a pediatrician.

  • Common Side Effects: Indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, itching, hives, headache, and mucocutaneous candidiasis (a fungal infection affecting skin and mucous membranes).
  • Overdose Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and decreased urination. Seek immediate medical attention in case of suspected overdose.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Avoid giving Mcv DS Suspension if the child is allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin, cephalosporins, or any of its components.
  • Medical History: Inform the doctor about the child's complete medical history, including any previous allergies, heart problems, blood disorders, birth defects, lung anomaly, gastrointestinal problems, skin disorders, liver impairment, or kidney malfunction.
  • Liver/Kidney Issues: Use with caution in children with mild to moderate liver impairment or impaired kidney function. Dose adjustment may be necessary. It is not recommended for severe liver diseases.
  • Mononucleosis: May cause an erythematous skin rash if given to a child suffering from mononucleosis.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform the doctor about all current medications, supplements, or herbal products the child is taking to avoid possible interactions. Mcv DS Suspension may interact with probenecid (leading to higher amoxicillin levels), oral anticoagulants like warfarin (increasing bleeding risk), and can decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
  • Vaccination: Children taking antibiotics should generally not be vaccinated until they recover from the illness.
  • Viral Infections: This medicine is effective only against bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Storage:

  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 30°C (Non cold chain: 10°C to 25°C or below 30°C).
  • The prepared suspension should be kept in the refrigerator and used within 7 days. Any leftover after this period should be discarded.
Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about MCV DS SUSP by MANEESH HEALTHCARE, along with concise answers:

What is MCV DS SUSP used for?

MCV DS SUSP is an antibiotic medicine primarily used to treat various bacterial infections in children. These include infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, skin, urinary tract, and dental infections. It is also effective against resistant bacterial infections, including some forms of tuberculosis. It is important to note that this medicine is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

How does MCV DS SUSP work?

MCV DS SUSP contains two active ingredients: Amoxycillin and Clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria's survival, thereby killing the infection-causing bacteria. Clavulanic acid helps by inhibiting an enzyme called beta-lactamase, which some bacteria produce to destroy Amoxycillin. By blocking this enzyme, Clavulanic acid enhances Amoxycillin's effectiveness against resistant bacteria.

What is the usual dosage for MCV DS SUSP?

The dosage of MCV DS SUSP is determined by your doctor based on the severity and type of infection, as well as your child's body weight and age. It is typically given two times a day or as prescribed. It is recommended to administer the suspension with food to improve absorption and reduce the risk of stomach upset. Always use the provided measuring cup, syringe, or dropper to ensure accurate dosing and shake the bottle well before each use.

What are the possible side effects of MCV DS SUSP?

Common side effects can include indigestion, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, skin rash, itching, hives, and headache. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve as the body adjusts to the medicine. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, you should consult your paediatrician.

Is MCV DS SUSP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MCV DS SUSP is typically prescribed for children. Therefore, precautions related to pregnancy and breastfeeding are generally not applicable to the primary patient group for this pediatric suspension.

Can MCV DS SUSP be taken with other medications?

MCV DS SUSP can interact with other medicines. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all current medications, supplements, or herbal products your child is taking to avoid potential interactions. For instance, it may interact with blood thinners like warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding, and can decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. While antibiotics generally do not interfere with vaccines, it is advisable for a child to recover from their illness before receiving vaccinations.

What precautions should be taken when using MCV DS SUSP?

Do not give MCV DS SUSP if your child is allergic to penicillins, cephalosporins, other beta-lactamase inhibitors, or any of its components. Inform your doctor if your child has any history of liver or kidney problems, as dose adjustments may be necessary. It is vital to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. This medicine is not for viral infections.

What happens if a dose of MCV DS SUSP is missed?

If you miss giving a dose of MCV DS SUSP, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should MCV DS SUSP be stored?

MCV DS SUSP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, ideally between 10ºC to 30ºC. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Once prepared (if it's a dry syrup to be reconstituted), the suspension should be stored in the refrigerator and used within 7 days, after which any remaining medicine should be discarded.
