PRED FORTE EYE DROP 10 ML

PRED FORTE Eye Drop is an ophthalmic corticosteroid suspension manufactured by Allergan India Pvt. Ltd., used to treat various inflammatory conditions of the eye.

Composition

  • Active Ingredients: Prednisolone acetate 1% w/v (microfine suspension).
  • Inactive Ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride (as preservative), boric acid, edetate disodium, hypromellose, polysorbate 80, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sodium chloride, and sodium citrate.

Uses PRED FORTE is indicated for the short-term treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe. It effectively reduces irritation, burning, redness, and swelling caused by chemicals, heat, radiation, allergies, or foreign objects in the eye.

Dosage and Administration

  • Shake the bottle well before use.
  • Instill one to two drops into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily.
  • During the initial 24 to 48 hours, the dosing frequency may be increased to two drops every hour if necessary.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye or eyelids, to prevent contamination.
  • After instilling drops, gently apply pressure to the inner corner of the eye for about 30 seconds to minimize systemic absorption.
  • Do not discontinue therapy prematurely.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Temporary blurred vision, burning or stinging sensation upon instillation, eye irritation, foreign body sensation, headache, pruritus, rash, and taste changes.
  • Serious Side Effects: Prolonged use may lead to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) with potential development of glaucoma and optic nerve damage, posterior subcapsular cataract formation, and delayed wound healing. It can also increase the risk of secondary ocular infections (bacterial, fungal, and viral). Report any eye pain, sudden vision changes, tunnel vision, seeing halos around lights, or signs of new eye infection to a doctor immediately.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: PRED FORTE is contraindicated in acute untreated purulent ocular infections, most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, and varicella), mycobacterial infection of the eye, and fungal diseases of ocular structures.
  • Contact Lenses: Remove soft contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as benzalkonium chloride (a preservative) may discolor them and cause eye irritation.
  • Glaucoma and Cataracts: Use with caution in patients with glaucoma or a history of cataracts. Regular intraocular pressure monitoring is recommended with prolonged use (more than 10 days).
  • Infections: Corticosteroids can mask or worsen existing ocular infections. Appropriate anti-infective treatment should be used if an infection is present.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not recommended for use during breastfeeding.
  • Driving and Machinery: May cause temporary blurred vision; avoid driving or operating machinery until vision clears.
  • Sulfite Sensitivity: Contains sodium bisulfite, which may cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

Storage Store at up to 25°C (77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and in an upright position. Use within 28 days after opening. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about PRED FORTE EYE DROP 10 ML by ALLERGAN INDIA PVT. LTD., along with concise answers:

What is PRED FORTE Eye Drop used for?

PRED FORTE Eye Drop is a sterile ophthalmic suspension used for the short-term treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the eye. It helps reduce irritation, burning, redness, and swelling caused by conditions such as chemical or heat burns, radiation, allergies, or foreign objects in the eye, as well as inflammation after eye surgery, certain eye infections, keratitis, and iritis.

How does PRED FORTE Eye Drop work?

PRED FORTE contains prednisolone acetate, which is a corticosteroid. It works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the body that cause inflammation, thereby reducing swelling, irritation, burning, redness, and itching in the eye. Prednisolone acetate has a strong anti-inflammatory potency.

What is the usual dosage of PRED FORTE Eye Drop?

The usual recommended dose is one to two drops instilled into the affected eye(s) two to four times daily. During the initial 24 to 48 hours, the dosing frequency may be increased, potentially as often as every hour, depending on the severity of the condition and as directed by your doctor. It is crucial not to discontinue therapy prematurely and to follow your doctor's specific instructions.

How should PRED FORTE Eye Drop be applied?

Before use, wash your hands and shake the bottle well. Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Invert the bottle and squeeze to release one or two drops into this space. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. After applying the drop, gently close your eye and press your finger against the corner of your eye (near the nose) for about one minute to help absorption and reduce systemic effects. If more than one drop is needed in the same eye, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.

What are the possible side effects of PRED FORTE Eye Drop?

Common side effects can include temporary blurred vision, stinging, burning, itching, or irritation in the eye for a minute or two after application, eye pain, redness, headache, feeling like something is in your eye, and taste changes.

More serious, though less common, side effects, especially with prolonged use (more than 10 days), can include increased intraocular pressure (which may lead to glaucoma and optic nerve damage), posterior subcapsular cataract formation (clouding of the eye lens), and an increased risk of secondary eye infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal). Other reported adverse reactions include allergic reactions, keratitis, conjunctivitis, and delayed wound healing, particularly after cataract surgery.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: PRED FORTE should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as animal studies have shown harmful effects on developing babies. It is generally considered safe for short-term use during pregnancy due to very little systemic absorption. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning a baby.

Breastfeeding: Use of PRED FORTE is generally not recommended if you are breastfeeding. While it's unknown if significant amounts pass into breast milk from topical ophthalmic administration, systemically administered corticosteroids can appear in human milk. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and potential risks.

Can it be taken with other medications?

There are no known interactions between prednisolone ophthalmic drops and many other medicines. However, some medicines may increase the effects of PRED FORTE, and your doctor may wish to monitor you carefully if you are taking them. This includes certain medicines for HIV (like ritonavir, cobicistat), some antibiotics (clarithromycin, erythromycin), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, fluconazole), aprepitant, and some blood pressure/heart medications (diltiazem, verapamil). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops may also interact. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription, over-the-counter, herbal medications, and supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Contact Lenses: Remove soft contact lenses before applying PRED FORTE Eye Drop. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before reinserting them, as the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed and discolor soft lenses and may cause eye irritation.
  • Contamination: Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination, which can lead to infection.
  • Prolonged Use: Do not use for longer than prescribed (generally not more than 10 days) without strict ophthalmic supervision, as prolonged use can lead to increased eye pressure, glaucoma, cataracts, or mask existing infections. Regular eye exams may be needed to monitor for these effects.
  • Existing Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, a history of herpes simplex, corneal thinning, eye ulcers, or any viral, fungal, or bacterial eye infections, as PRED FORTE may worsen these conditions or delay healing.
  • Blurred Vision: PRED FORTE can cause temporary blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.
  • Allergic Reactions: PRED FORTE contains sodium bisulphite, which may cause allergic reactions, including life-threatening asthmatic episodes in susceptible individuals, especially those with asthma.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are unsure, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How should it be stored?

Store PRED FORTE Eye Drop at room temperature, typically between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Protect it from light and moisture, and do not freeze it. Keep the bottle tightly closed and store it in an upright position. Discard any remaining medication 28 days (or 4 weeks) after opening the bottle. Keep it out of the reach of children.
