Frequently asked questions
GLEMPA LM ER 25/5/1000MG TAB is a combination medication containing Empagliflozin (25mg), Linagliptin (5mg), and Metformin (1000mg) in an extended-release formulation. It is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes.
What is GLEMPA LM ER used for?
GLEMPA LM ER is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
How does GLEMPA LM ER work?
This medicine combines three different mechanisms to lower blood sugar. Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called SGLT2, causing excess glucose to be removed from the body through urine. Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that helps the pancreas release more insulin and reduces the liver's glucose production when blood sugar is high. Metformin, a biguanide, decreases glucose absorption from the stomach, reduces glucose release from the liver, and helps the body use glucose more effectively.
What is the usual dosage for GLEMPA LM ER?
The typical adult dosage is one tablet (Empagliflozin 25 mg/Linagliptin 5 mg/Metformin 1000 mg) taken orally once a day with a meal in the morning. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your individual needs and how well you tolerate the medication. The maximum recommended daily dose for the components are usually 25 mg empagliflozin, 5 mg linagliptin, and 2000 mg metformin.
What are the possible side effects of GLEMPA LM ER?
Common side effects can include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, constipation, and headache. More serious but less common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, kidney problems, pancreatitis, severe joint pain, and serious allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat).
Is GLEMPA LM ER safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
GLEMPA LM ER is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential adverse effects on the unborn baby's kidneys observed in animal studies. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding because it is unknown how much of the medication passes into breast milk and its potential effect on the breastfed infant's renal development. Discuss birth control options with your doctor if you are a woman of childbearing potential.
Can GLEMPA LM ER be taken with other medications?
This medication can interact with other drugs. It's important to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Particular caution is needed with diuretics (water pills), insulin, insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas), alcohol, and certain medications that can affect kidney function or increase the risk of lactic acidosis, such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., topiramate, acetazolamide) and some drugs interfering with metformin elimination (e.g., cimetidine, ranolazine, dolutegravir, vandetanib).
What precautions should be taken while on GLEMPA LM ER?
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, heart failure, a history of pancreatitis, dehydration, a history of urinary tract or genital infections, or are a heavy alcohol user. You may need to temporarily stop this medication before certain surgeries or imaging procedures that involve iodinated contrast agents. Regular monitoring of kidney function and vitamin B12 levels may be necessary.
What happens if a dose of GLEMPA LM ER is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double or extra dose to make up for a missed one.
How should GLEMPA LM ER be stored?
Store GLEMPA LM ER tablets in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep the medicine away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and do not freeze it. Always keep it out of the reach of children.
