Description

Lactifiber Syrup 180ml

Lactifiber Syrup 180ml, manufactured by SUN PHARMA-SYGNUS DIV, is an osmotic laxative primarily used to alleviate constipation and manage hepatic encephalopathy.

Composition

The primary active ingredient in Lactifiber Syrup is Lactitol Monohydrate (10 Gm/15ml). Benzoic Acid is also included as a preservative.

Uses

Lactifiber Syrup is prescribed for the following medical conditions:

  • Constipation: It treats infrequent bowel movements and hard, dry stools by drawing water into the intestine, making the stool softer and easier to pass.
  • Hepatic Encephalopathy: It is used in the treatment and prevention of this serious liver problem, which can cause confusion, tremors, and decreased consciousness. The syrup works by lowering colon pH, which suppresses the absorption of ammonia and other toxins, thereby enhancing nitrogen excretion and improving brain function.

Dosage and Administration

  • Lactifiber Syrup is typically taken once a day.
  • It is advisable to take it at bedtime, as it generally takes 6 to 8 hours to produce an effect.
  • The syrup can be taken with or without food and may be mixed with water or fruit juice if preferred.
  • Adults: The typical dosage is 10-20g (or 15-30 ml) per day, which can be adjusted based on the individual's response.
  • Children: Dosage should be determined by a doctor based on age and weight.
  • Ensure adequate daily fluid intake while using this medicine.
  • Take Lactifiber Syrup at least 2 hours after other medications, as it may interfere with their absorption.
  • Consult a doctor if constipation persists after three days, as the syrup takes at least 48 hours to work.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Abdominal distension (bloating)

Serious Side Effects (less common):

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, galactosemia, or are unable to digest milk sugar (lactose intolerant).
  • Patients with a history of stomach disorders such as appendicitis, bowel blockage, intestinal obstruction, ileostomy, colostomy, or inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases should consult their doctor before use.
  • Avoid taking other laxative medicines concurrently with Lactifiber Syrup.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before using this syrup.
  • Consult your doctor regarding alcohol consumption while on this medication, as information is limited and excessive intake should be avoided.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease, and always consult a doctor.
  • Prolonged use without medical supervision is not recommended to prevent dependency for bowel movements.
  • Seek medical advice if you experience no bowel movements or notice rectal bleeding after consumption.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about LACTIFIBER SYP 180ML:

What is Lactifiber Syrup used for?

Lactifiber Syrup is primarily used as a laxative to treat constipation by softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements. It is also used to prevent and treat hepatic encephalopathy, a condition where liver dysfunction leads to decreased brain function.

How does Lactifiber Syrup work?

Lactifiber Syrup contains Lactitol, which is a disaccharide sugar. It works by drawing water into the intestines through osmosis, which softens the stool and makes it easier to pass. In cases of hepatic encephalopathy, Lactitol also helps by lowering the colon pH, which suppresses the absorption of ammonia and other toxins, and aids in their excretion through feces, thus improving brain function.

What is the usual dosage for Lactifiber Syrup?

The dosage of Lactifiber Syrup should be taken exactly as advised by your doctor. For adults, typical doses may range from 10–20g per day, adjusted based on the individual's response and condition. It can be taken with or without food, but it's advisable to take it at the same time each day for consistency. It is recommended to use a measuring cup for precise dosing and shake the bottle well before use.

What are the possible side effects of Lactifiber Syrup?

Common side effects of Lactifiber Syrup include flatulence (gas), abdominal cramps, abdominal distension (bloating), mild abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild and may subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, mood changes, or seizures, consult your doctor immediately.

Is Lactifiber Syrup safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is important to consult your doctor before using Lactifiber Syrup. For pregnant women, it should only be used if the benefits are determined to outweigh the potential risks, as there is limited information on its use during pregnancy. It is generally considered safe to use while breastfeeding, but medical advice is still recommended to ensure it is suitable for your specific situation.

Can Lactifiber Syrup be taken with other medications?

Lactifiber Syrup can interact with certain medications. For instance, diuretics (like bumetanide) can cause dehydration when taken with this syrup, and digitalis (like digoxin) could lead to toxicity. Some antibiotics (such as Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxacin, and Tetracyclines) might reduce its prebiotic effect by altering gut bacteria. To avoid potential interactions, it is advisable to take Lactifiber Syrup at least 2 hours apart from other medications. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken when using Lactifiber Syrup?

Avoid using Lactifiber Syrup if you have undiagnosed abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, ileostomy, colostomy, appendicitis, diverticulitis, or galactosemia (a condition affecting galactose digestion). If you have diabetes, Lactifiber Syrup has a low glycemic index, but it should still be used under medical supervision to monitor blood sugar levels. Adequate fluid intake (6-8 glasses of water daily) is recommended while taking this syrup to help prevent dehydration and soften stools. Avoid prolonged use without medical advice, as it may lead to dependency for bowel movements.

What happens if a dose of Lactifiber Syrup is missed?

If you miss a dose of Lactifiber Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Lactifiber Syrup be stored?

Lactifiber Syrup should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. It should be protected from light and moisture and kept out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the syrup.
