FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP by ZYDUS GERMAN (RESPICARE)

Name

Brand Name: FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP

Composition

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Budesonide (100 mcg): An inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways.
  • Formoterol Fumarate (6 mcg): A long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) that relaxes the muscles around the airways, widening them and making breathing easier.

Uses

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP is prescribed for the regular, long-term management of respiratory conditions in adults and children over 6 years of age. It is used for:

  • Asthma: To reduce inflammation, prevent asthma attacks, and manage symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. It is not for acute asthma attacks.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema, to manage symptoms, reduce exacerbations, and improve airflow.

Dosage and Administration

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP is for inhalational use only, typically administered using a Revolizer inhaler device. The exact dose and duration are determined by a doctor based on age, body weight, and severity of the condition.

  • Typical adult and adolescent dosage (12 years and older): One capsule inhaled twice daily, in the morning and evening, providing a total daily dose of 200 mcg of budesonide and 12 mcg of formoterol.
  • Some patients with more severe conditions may be prescribed a higher starting dose, such as two capsules inhaled twice daily.
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each dose to help prevent fungal infections. Do not swallow the capsule.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Muscle pain, cramps
  • Difficulty sleeping, palpitations, increased heart rate
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Increased blood sugar levels, decreased potassium levels
  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), rhinitis, sinusitis, cough, throat irritation, hoarseness of voice
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, loose stools
  • Candidiasis (fungal infection) in the mouth and throat (oral thrush)
  • Back pain, flu-like symptoms

Serious side effects are less common but warrant immediate medical attention if experienced.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Not recommended if allergic to budesonide, formoterol, or any other ingredients.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited safety data, unless clearly necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have heart problems (e.g., irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure), diabetes, convulsive disorders, thyroid problems, liver problems, kidney problems, osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts, or infections (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic).
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), certain antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), antidepressants (e.g., nefazodone, tricyclic antidepressants), HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir), beta-blockers, and diuretics.
  • Children: Not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
  • Acute Symptoms: This medication is for long-term maintenance and should not be used for sudden shortness of breath or acute asthma attacks; a separate rescue inhaler should be used.

Frequently asked questions

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP: Frequently Asked Questions

What is FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP used for?

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP is used for the long-term management and prevention of symptoms associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It helps to prevent and treat difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. It is not intended for the management of acute asthma attacks or sudden worsening of COPD symptoms; a separate rescue inhaler should be used for such instances.

How does FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP work?

This medication contains two active ingredients: Budesonide and Formoterol. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways by suppressing the release of inflammatory substances. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that works by relaxing and widening the muscles in the air passages of the lungs, thereby making breathing easier.

What is the usual dosage for FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP?

The typical initial dosage for adults and adolescents (12 years and older) is one capsule inhaled twice daily, usually in the morning and evening. Each capsule delivers 100 mcg of Budesonide and 6 mcg of Formoterol. Always use FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP exactly as advised by your doctor, who will determine the correct dose and duration based on your condition. This medicine is for inhalation only; do not swallow the capsule.

What are the possible side effects of FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP?

Common side effects may include fungal infection in the mouth (oral thrush), headache, sore throat, hoarse voice, upper respiratory tract infection, cough, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and an increased heart rate. Other possible side effects include back pain, trembling, muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, palpitations, increased blood sugar levels, and decreased potassium levels. Rinsing your mouth with water and spitting it out after each use can help prevent fungal infections in the mouth and throat.

Is FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, it is advised to consult your doctor before using FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP. While some animal studies show low or no adverse effects, human studies are limited, and it is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Can FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP be taken with other medications?

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP can interact with certain medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Specific interactions include antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), beta-blockers (e.g., atenolol), diuretics, some antidepressants (e.g., nefazodone, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants), and certain HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., indinavir, ritonavir).

What precautions should be taken while using FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP?

Several precautions should be observed. Do not use FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP for sudden breathing difficulties; use a rescue inhaler instead. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as heart problems (including high blood pressure), diabetes, low potassium levels (hypokalaemia), glaucoma, cataracts, osteoporosis, fits, immune system problems, thyroid issues, or liver problems. This medicine may weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. Regular monitoring of potassium levels may be recommended. FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP is not recommended for children below 6 years of age. Do not stop the treatment abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen your condition. Avoid consuming alcohol while on this medication.

What happens if a dose of FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP is missed?

If you miss a dose of FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP be stored?

FORMONIDE 100 RESPICAP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The recommended storage temperature is below 30°C. Ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children.
