MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP 5 ML

MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP is a prescription ophthalmic solution manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd., combining an antibiotic with a corticosteroid to treat eye infections and associated inflammation.

Composition

  • Active Ingredients: Each ml contains Moxifloxacin (0.5% w/v) and Dexamethasone (0.1% w/v).
  • Preservative: Benzalkonium chloride (0.01%) is also present.

Uses MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP is primarily used for the management of bacterial eye infections, especially when inflammation is present. This includes conditions such as:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis.
  • Other superficial eye infections caused by susceptible bacterial strains.
  • Reduction of inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling associated with bacterial eye infections.
  • Prevention of postoperative infections and inflammation following ocular surgeries.

Dosage and Administration

  • This medicine is for external ophthalmic use only.
  • The typical dosage is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2-4 times a day, or as directed by a physician.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
  • Tilt the head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, instill the prescribed drops, and close the eye for 2-3 minutes.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelids, or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • If using other eye medications, allow at least a 5-minute interval between applications.
  • Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from recurring.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Temporary burning sensation, stinging, discomfort upon instillation, ocular itching, redness, and temporary blurred vision.
  • Serious Side Effects (Rare): Severe allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/throat/tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing), severe skin reactions, severe eye pain/irritation/vision changes, or pain/swelling of tendons. Consult a doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to Moxifloxacin, Dexamethasone, or any other ingredients. It is also contraindicated in cases of fungal, viral (e.g., herpes simplex), or parasitic eye infections, tuberculosis, damaged cornea, ulceration, or increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma).
  • Warnings: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. It may cause temporary blurred vision; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until vision clears. Remove soft contact lenses before applying and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion. Prolonged use of corticosteroid-containing eye drops may lead to adrenal gland suppression and an increased risk of cataracts. Not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age.
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, especially other eye drops, medicines for HIV (e.g., ritonavir, cobicistat), or glaucoma medications (e.g., timolol, pindolol).

Storage

  • Store at room temperature, ideally below 30°C.
  • Keep away from direct light and moisture.
  • Ensure the bottle is tightly closed to prevent contamination.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Discard any remaining medicine four weeks after opening the bottle.
Frequently asked questions

What is MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP used for?

MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP is primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections, especially when accompanied by inflammation. It is also prescribed to reduce eye pain, redness, itching, or burning sensations following eye surgery, and as a preventive measure against postoperative infections and inflammation. Conditions it treats include bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial eye infections.

How does MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP work?

This medication contains two active ingredients: Moxifloxacin and Dexamethasone. Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria by interfering with their DNA replication, leading to bacterial cell death. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling by blocking the production of inflammatory substances in the eyes. Together, they treat the infection and alleviate associated inflammation. Benzalkonium chloride is also included as a preservative.

What is the usual dosage for MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP?

The typical dosage is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2-4 times a day, or as directed by your doctor. It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions regarding the exact dosage and duration of treatment, which is often around 7 days. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or stop treatment early, even if symptoms improve, as this could lead to the infection returning or worsening.

What are the possible side effects of MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP?

Common side effects include a temporary burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, discomfort upon instillation, ocular itching, redness, or blurred vision. Other mild side effects can include mild eye irritation, increased eye pressure, headache, and taste changes. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor. Rarely, more serious side effects like severe eye irritation or pain, allergic reactions (skin rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), vision changes, worsening eye infection, or pain/swelling of tendons can occur.

Is MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP should be used with caution during pregnancy and only after consulting your doctor, as there is limited information on its safety, and it is classified as a Category C medicine, which may cause moderate side effects to the unborn baby or fetus. Similarly, if you are breastfeeding, it is recommended to exercise caution and consult your doctor before using this medicine to understand potential risks and benefits.

Can MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP be taken with other medications?

While interactions are less likely with topically applied eye drops, it is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, including herbal supplements and vitamins, you are currently taking. If using other eye drops, instill them at least 5 minutes apart. Concomitant use with oral corticosteroids and NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) may increase the risk of corneal healing complications. Interactions have also been noted with certain medicines for HIV (e.g., ritonavir, cobicistat) and glaucoma (e.g., timolol, acetazolamide). Severe interactions have been reported with Disopyramide, Warfarin, Quinidine, Alfuzosin, and Amiodarone.

What precautions should be taken while using MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP?

Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelids, or any other surface to prevent contamination. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you experience temporary blurred vision after application. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if your symptoms improve. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions such as mycobacterial ocular infections, ocular herpes simplex, glaucoma, eye injury, or eye surgery. This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose of MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP be stored?

Store MAHAFLOX D EYE DROP at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. Keep it away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed to prevent contamination and keep it out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the medicine.
